Farage promises to deport people with ILR

1000 replies

Acidburn · 22/09/2025 12:21

Posting in AIBU for traffic.
Nigel Farage stated he would deport anyone with existing indefinite leave to remain. We are talking about millions of people.
This terrifying. If people live here, work here, have kids and mortgages - where are they supposed to go?

I doubt this could/ would ever happen.
It’s another dishonest headline grabber

ladybirdsanchez · 22/09/2025 12:31

I wouldn't worry too much - it's just Farage rabble-rousing and he'd be tied up in legal red-tape for ages if he tried to do this.

JackGrealishsCalves · 22/09/2025 12:34

I'll believe it when I see it, all politicians lie through their teeth to get votes and this in particular would be nigh impossible to impose and I'm glad of that.
My DH had ILR after we married for about 10 years until he decided to get citizenship. A man who had been in the UK legally over 15 years, married to me (British) and with a ds, paid taxes and NI in all that time and not a drain on society.
Farage is a liar and a racist

NewWin · 22/09/2025 12:36

This would directly impact me but... I don't believe the liar

Acidburn · 22/09/2025 12:37

The next move would be to deport British born people whose parents were not British born. Insane.

OP posts:
BeHappySloth · 22/09/2025 12:37

The immediate impact of this will be that we will probably lose a lot of highly skilled migrants that we desperately need, because people with options just won't want to take the risk.

He is a vile, hateful man with no moral compass whatsoever. It is terrifying to think that he may be our next PM.

Suzyloo · 22/09/2025 12:38

They want us to go back where we came from, regardless of how much we might have paid in tax (while claiming zero in benefits and almost never using the NHS). I watched the press conference and felt annoyed, but then decided to feel fortunate that I have somewhere else to go if Reform ever get in. UK citizens mostly won't be that lucky.

Before that, I imagine that they will go for revoking the British citizenship of people who were born overseas.

And then they'll go for the children.

It's chilling.

HelpMeUnpickThis · 22/09/2025 12:39

Thank you for posting on this @Acidburn

I saw the news article on this and felt quite worried (understatement).

I have been here as a skilled migrant for 25 years this year, and have ILR, 2 children and a now exH with Brit passports, DC settled at school, a mortgage, volunteering commitments in the community. No crimes, no fines - a person of good conduct. Highest rate tax payer.

To think they would revoke my ILR now is terrifying.

I hate Farage. I think he is honestly the first person I have truly hated and I dont even know him at all.

I hate how things are at the moment.

This is very true. Anyone with an escape route will be amongst the lucky ones.

Oh look, a flying pig!!

Friendlygingercat · 22/09/2025 12:40

In the past too many people have been allowed in and granted British passports and citizenship. Many of these people are not net contributers because they bring in unproductive dependents who are using schools, the health service, housing and so on. They should only have been allowed in as single guest workers and with all the restrictions on use of facilities that that implies. There are now too many people in this country. When I was a child in the 1950s our population was around 50 million. Now its appriaching 70 million many of whom are not economically active.

Eviebeans · 22/09/2025 12:40

I was listening and that is not what I heard him say. He said that if you have been granted indefinite leave to remain by a previous government they will not try to change that.
My understanding however is that going forward there will be no granting of indefinite leave to remain. Also that rules to come here to work will be stricter and will not for example allow accompanying families

ShortColdandGrey · 22/09/2025 12:41

He is such a twat and is just copying everything Trump has been saying. I don't understand how anyone can listen to him never mind vote for him.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 22/09/2025 12:45

Is that also going to apply to his German wife (albeit they're separated) & his French partner?

Honestly the man is a loon!

Did you read my post?

There should be a way to differentiate between non contributors and contributors.

What about the British people who are not contributors? Let’s have a chat about that. But you dont want to and you wont.

Most visa categories for skilled migrant visas have loads of restrictions about access to benefits etc.

Why don’t you focus on the numbers of British born people who dont work when they can? If you did it would be a little less racist.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 22/09/2025 12:47

Farage is a divisive weasel. I'm sorry he's worried anyone but I honestly dont think this would be agreed.

mugglewump · 22/09/2025 12:48

@Friendlygingercat, how do you define too many people? Or too many immigrants? The biggest group of economically inactive are pensioners, like yourself. We need the working age immigrants to support our ever increasingly aged population. And those 'unproductive, negative contributors' are largely children who will be working and paying taxes in the next 10 to 15 years, supporting the likes of you. Please stop this inhumane hate and realise that it is the billionnaire newpaper barons that are manipulating you because they wish to hide the truth that it is the super wealthy that are making us poor, not the desparate to make a better lives for their families immigrants.

BundleBoogie · 22/09/2025 12:48

From the BBC:

Yusuf said the changes would lead to "hundreds of thousands of people having to apply and ultimately losing their settled status in the UK".
"Many of those who will lose their leave to remain are entirely dependent on the welfare state and will leave voluntarily upon losing access to benefits," he said.

It appears that this is targeted at non EU nationals (they have different protections) that haven’t managed to find legitimate employment and are on benefits. I would say that if it hasn’t worked out for someone who has gone over here and they are not able to ‘pay their way’, then they should be told to leave. Our benefits system already costs an eye watering amount - we can’t afford to finance an ever growing number of people.

They also need to sort out the rapidly growing number of ‘cash only’ high street businesses, run by non English men, often ‘humble barbers’ with very quiet shops but driving expensive cars. My friends DS has already been caught up in money laundering with one of the several barbers in our tiny high street.

Ginmonkeyagain · 22/09/2025 12:52

It's quite hard to get IDR. You generally can't just rock up, claim benefits and get it.

Including his French girlfriend?

Parry5timesbeforedeath · 22/09/2025 12:53

That's my situation. Have had Indefinite Leave to Remain since 2005.

Am a middle-higher earner and pay the accompanying tax. Am well and truly a net contributer. Had a flat with a mortgage that i then sold when i married DH and paid the accompanying CGT. have children here who are British citizens.

I've paid into this country in good faith. I've paid decades of NI and frankly deserve to receive whatever state pension is owing to me IMO. Never had any other benefits. Our GP surgery is practically defunct so the last 3 years I have paid private for fairly basic services- so not even taking out of the system that way. Have children in private school so they are not taking the costs of their education from the state.

What IS it with all these parties wanting to fuck over the very people who are propping up the state?

1950s eh? I wonder how much you contributed throughout your working life.

You're now at the age where you'll be requiring the services of the NHS as well. Well good luck with that since there won't be the staff.

I’ve just read up on the detail of the proposals from Reform and got past just the bald summary from people with an agenda determined to discredit Reform, they ARE differentiating between contributors and non contributors.

Their intention is to stop people moving here to claim benefits which seems like a sound idea to me.

OP is being rather economic with the details on this.

KateMiskin · 22/09/2025 12:54

Perhaps we can give up this pretence that Reform is against illegal immigration. They are against all immigration. Including skilled immigrants.
