This morning when I went out at 8 a.m. it was the first morning I've felt the autumn chill in the air. And although it's been sunny and bright and warm in the sun all day there's been an icy breeze.

Having said that my living room is currently saying 17.5, and thats with the windows open, and I'm comfortably warm enough.
.
My heating will come on when the living room temperatire dips below 13°. I'm hoping that won't be until nearer November but if it's before then so be it.

I totally sympathise with OP and anyone else who dread having to put the heating on because of financial worry.

TeenLifeMum · 21/09/2025 20:57

We went for an evening dog walk and I wore a denim shirt, vest top and cardigan with bare legs. I have got a heated blanket over my feet right now which is nice. Definitely don’t need heating yet but house is well insulated. It’s 19.8 degrees in the house. 8 degrees outside.

AliceMaforethought · 21/09/2025 20:58

It's not quite cold enough yet. I am less worried about bills and more about what the heating does to my skin, which is very dry.

Nah, it was a failed attempt at superiority.

I’d much rather be superior, sadly just raging hot in anything over 15 degrees and have been horrible sleep deprived for the past four months.
But you go ahead and continue to find offense in everything

Chenecinquantecinq · 21/09/2025 20:58

T shirt and shorts today c20c South Coast 🇬🇧 you live too far North clearly!

No capes here, just sweaty red faced grumpy fed up perimenopausal woman sick of being held hostage by the shittiness of being female, and thanking the Gods for summer (aka 11th circle of hell) finally fucking the fuck off to the far end of fuck.
K?

And other people in your house? The house itself? Medicate it if it’s making you that grumpy. I’m 60, but the way.

padso · 21/09/2025 20:59

Is it normal to walk around your home with a thermometer checking the temperature, I confess i only bought a room plug in thing for the baby & it was donated to the charity shop a long time ago. 🤷🏻‍♀️

KimTheresPeopleThatAreDying · 21/09/2025 20:51

Thanks to perimenopause I’ve been pouring sweat today 😂

Careful, people will accuse you of being ‘superior’

AInightingale · 21/09/2025 20:59

I can highly recommend the menopause. Wrecks everything else in your life, but doesn't half cut down the heating bills.

Hi, are you my GP? If you are please check my records - you’ll find I’m medicated.

Just horribly suffering from perimenopause, but apparently being finally comfortable and to sleep makes me morally superior.

Im just thankful I’m not on the floor frok exhaustion, finally.

I guess some people just prefer to be offended by everything.

While your intent wasn't perhaps to feel superior, read back to how you replied to my post and consider how it could be interpreted. As it is, I'm not offended in the slightest though, I'll take note of the opinions of those who actually live in my house. ✌️

LGBirmingham · 21/09/2025 21:01

Where do you live? I've only just started wearing a jumper outside this weekend. We don't have heating on because it is still pretty warm.

Muffsies · 21/09/2025 21:01

I grew up in a home without central heating, and my first house had two storage heaters, and nothing else. I didn't get central heating installed until 2013 just before my 3rd child was born.

I can recommend brushed cotton sheets, cellular blankets, hot water bottles and heatpads, which you can buy on amazon. They are very safe, effective and cheap to run. I bought some for all of my elderly relatives so they can keep warm without having to turn the heating up.

Echobelly · 21/09/2025 21:01

Nah, I put in on today for early morning/later evening for the minute - I do that once the nights start getting colder. Otherwise you get this annoying patch where it's not warm enough to dry laundry outside, but it takes forever to dry inside because it's not that warm and the heating isn't on. At least this way the laundry dries a bit faster.

This is very true.

Modern tumble dryers are very eco friendly and economical. I also don't like damp clothing hanging around the house. I like it washed, dried and put away.

It doesn’t hang around. Dries overnight. Maybe a little longer before the ehat comes on. No space or desire for a tumble drier. Made the decision they were a waste decades ago.

TheFormidableMrsC · 21/09/2025 21:02

I’m really cold tonight. I’ve got a blanket and a cardigan because I can’t turn it on yet! I’m in the SE and it’s been lovely and warm here today.

rainbowunicorn · 21/09/2025 21:02

padso · 21/09/2025 20:57

@rainbowunicorn I have a thermostat but can't remember what it's set to & it's in my hall so I don't know the temperature in other rooms. Is it really that baffling to you?

No, not at all but your question was how people knew how hot it was inside their houses. It sounded like you weren't aware of people having a home thermometer thats all.

Worralorra · 21/09/2025 21:02

It’s 11 degrees outside, and 22 inside. Had the patio doors open all day and one window in bedroom is on nightlock to let some fresh air in…
Still using the summer duvet - will change it once the night temperature gets down to below 5 (I’m always too hot!) and the heating is set to come on if the inside dips below 17…

Spirallingdownwards · 21/09/2025 20:26

It's not cold enough here to need the hearing on yet. Where are you?

To be honest, saying "it's not cold enough" is pretty silly. Who are you to say what temperature people feel comfortable at? If they feel the chill and it's making them wish they could get the heating on, who are you to decide it's not cold enough?

Nobody is offended.
If menopause is making you sweaty and exhausted, medicate it. You don’t have to put up with that.

I still have windows open and wearing a T-shirt. Based East Anglia.

Everyone’s perfectly happy in my house - I’m the only one with yhd windows wide open in my room.

Cheers.

Our temps just have gone from being able to walk around outside in a t-shirt to being in single figures, partly due to the change in wind direction! It's still bright but getting quite chilly!
