It's not cold enough here to need the hearing on yet. Where are you?

Same. Am absolutely fine in a jumper. It's not even a bit cold yet.

cardibach · 21/09/2025 20:38

justinhawkinsnavalfluff · 21/09/2025 20:35

No heating on till november that's the rule. That's what extra jumpers are for.

That’s a stupid rule. What if it’s below zero in October but warmer in November?
Heating should be decided by temperature, not date.

LimeBasilandManderin · 21/09/2025 20:39

That won’t go on for weeks yet, if at all.

Catsknowbest · 21/09/2025 20:39

I can assure you it is in Cumbria. We are at 6 dropping to 1 tonight. So with a husband with health issues yes the heating is going on.

Wow, it's been t-shirt weather here Grin

Same here (London), I'm sitting here wearing t.shirt and joggers.

Thermo says it's 19 degrees in my living room, so definitely don't need heating.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 21/09/2025 20:39

Don't need it. It's currently 21.5 degrees indoors!

I hope to avoid putting it on for at least another month. Once it gets below 17 indoors it's usually time.

It’s been sunny here, but I’ve needed a jumper.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 21/09/2025 20:40

We let the thermostat decide when the heating comes on, not the calendar. It’s set to 18 degrees in the evenings and beween 5.30-7.30 in the morning and 15 degrees the rest of the time.

Today has been warm, the nights are forecast to get cooler this week so it might click on some mornings.

TBH the standing charge is the worst part of the bill. Using the heating doesn’t add a huge amount more.

Catsknowbest · 21/09/2025 20:40

Always makes me 🙄 this. Our seasons are up the creek yet people still insist on this no heating until....as if its 30 years ago.

padso · 21/09/2025 20:40

It was sunny during the day but not t-shirt weather imo.

In our house heating goes on at Halloween and goes off at Easter

Same. I don’t there my heating on or off. The thermostat decides, because the date is irrelevant to whether heating is needed.

Catsknowbest · 21/09/2025 20:41

Are you in the south?

Even if it’s warm in March but freezing in October? Madness.

padso · 21/09/2025 20:42

How do people know how hot the inside of their house is?

PinkyFlamingo · 21/09/2025 20:42

Toomanywaterbottles · 21/09/2025 20:32

It’s not cold, though. I’ve been in sandals and a summer dress all day, out and about. Got three loads of washing dried on the line outside.

You mean it's not cold where you are, surely that depends on where you are?

BeMellowAquaSquid · 21/09/2025 20:42

I’ve had it on twice for an hour each time mainly so I could see if our new radiator worked properly. My husband went nuts so now it’s fluffy socks and dressing gowns apparently until it snows

Catsknowbest · 21/09/2025 20:43

Thermostat reading on main controls in my house, and additional thermometer as I have to monitor for husband's conditions

MiddlingMarch · 21/09/2025 20:43

I put the heating on yesterday evening because it was a bit nippy but our house is quite well insulated so had to turn it off again after an hour.

No need for it in the mornings yet, again house seems to be warm enough still. Expecting frost overnight though.

spicetails · 21/09/2025 20:43

I’m still sleeping with the windows wide open and a duvet cover without a duvet inside

padso · 21/09/2025 20:42

A digital thermostat on the wall.

FancyQuoter · 21/09/2025 20:44

I don't believe in "rules" about which month to put the heating on, they are ridiculous.

I follow actual temperatures. If I am very cold, I put the heating on a bit. It's mainly to dry the house, I am more worried about damp and mould than anything.

South East London here, it's cooler today, but nowhere near bad enough for heating on. I have Uggs that I use as sleepers, my feet are never cold, and I just put a jumper. It's mainly for the kids that I need the house warm first thing and at bath time, but we're 10-15 degrees away from that

EmpressOfTheThread · 21/09/2025 20:44

Tastaturen · 21/09/2025 20:37

Surely that depends on where you live, how insulated your house is and so on.
Our rule is not to be competitive underheaters.
It's taken a dip here, at 3/3 of us feel the air decidedly colder, so low level 'taking the chill off' been instated.

Good post! 👏

Because the thermostat for my heating tells me.

Bluevelvetsofa · 21/09/2025 20:44

I dislike this competitive ‘not having the heating on until is 20 below zero.’ There’s no virtue in feeling cold and miserable if you can afford to have heat.
