To those saying 'it's not cold enough', our temps are forecast to struggle to make double figures, feeling like single figures, and with over 20mph north winds! It is cold in some places!

padso · 21/09/2025 20:45

Mine says 21, but I feel cold 😆

How do people know how hot the inside of their house is?

Our thermostat says. That’s in the hall. I don’t know the temperature in the rest of the house

padso · 21/09/2025 20:45

Or is that because I put the heating on?

I’ve got an overnight low of 4 and max 14 tomorrow - windows willl remain wide open tonight

Catsknowbest · 21/09/2025 20:46

Thermostat reading on main controls in my house, and additional thermometer as I have to monitor for husband's conditions

EmpressOfTheThread · 21/09/2025 20:46

@FancyQuoter - that's what we do. No silly rules. The heating is for our health and comfort and we're not bound by anything as arbitrary as a calendar.
I understand that it's best if the indoor temperature doesn't drop below 18°c.

SummerFeverVenice · 21/09/2025 20:46

I don’t have the heat on but it’s much warmer than 8C where I am.
I voted yabu to not have the heat on when it is 8C
You are at high risk of getting hypothermia at 16C (indoors)
Elderly and children are more vulnerable to hypothermia as well, so it is recommended to keep the temp at a minimum of 18C indoors.

If you are struggling with bills for heat, see if you can get help to pay them.

Bippybop · 21/09/2025 20:46

Not cold enough yet i still have the fans going.

It’s not cold, though. I’ve been in sandals and a summer dress all day, out and about. Got three loads of washing dried on the line outside.

Good for you but I don't live where you do and it's bloody cold where I am. I've had to dry the washing indoors so the heating's been on.

I don't believe in "rules" about which month to put the heating on, they are ridiculous.

I follow actual temperatures. If I am very cold, I put the heating on a bit. It's mainly to dry the house, I am more worried about damp and mould than anything.

South East London here, it's cooler today, but nowhere near bad enough for heating on. I have Uggs that I use as sleepers, my feet are never cold, and I just put a jumper. It's mainly for the kids that I need the house warm first thing and at bath time, but we're 10-15 degrees away from that

Surely anything below 20 would be abit chilly for a bath for children? At 18 I need an oodie, for instance. So you are saying your house is between 30 and 35? This seems unlikely.
What do you mean by using Ugg boots as sleepers?

Get a tumble dryer its life changing.

Ivegotafeelingwerenotinkansasanymore · 21/09/2025 20:47

North East here currently 8 but feels like 6 thanks to the wind, dropping to 3 overnight.

I've had the heating on for 30 minutes this evening to take the chill off, the house was 16.9 when I put it on, I've got a chronic condition so can't get too cold otherwise I'm ill for days.

Ive had a really hot bath and now have a dressing gown and electric blanket house is 18 now and comfortable with the above

That's 5 degrees higher than our max tomorrow though - do you also have the northerly winds?
I'll air my house by opening windows at some point, but I'll also take the chill off first thing if I want to.

FancyQuoter · 21/09/2025 20:48

spicetails · 21/09/2025 20:43

I’m still sleeping with the windows wide open and a duvet cover without a duvet inside

Now I am impressed, I have a duvet even in the middle of August 😂
I have added a blanket to said duvet, but I do have the window opened.

Well good for you, you absolute hero.
Meanwhile, I’ll be warm, thanks. Being able to tolerate the cold doesn’t make you morally superior, just FYI.

Edited

I meant "slippers"

sorry. Indoors shoes basically.

Still warm here. Had all windows and bifold open today to let in the fresh air and the inside is still about 23 degrees. Still going to bed with a fan on 😂

Scottishskifun · 21/09/2025 20:50

It went on today but only on a boost for 30 mins. Its 6 degrees here overnight.

We don't tend to have the house hot though. The heating comes on til 18.5 degrees kicks in if it drops in a room below 14 degrees.

My kids don't like it hot either but I think we are just used to an old house.

padso · 21/09/2025 20:50

With my firstborn I remember reading I had to keep the room at 18 degrees. I would go to bed absolutely freezing but was scared of overheating the baby!

RealPerson · 21/09/2025 20:50

No I cant stand a cold house. I was just at my mum's and it was so cold I was glad to leave, I don't know she can live like that

I am very eco-friendly in most ways tbh, but if it's baltic then I'm not freezing.
