Not trying to resist just haven't needed to yet. In London....it's still nice and mild thankfully. Long may it continue

B0D · 08/10/2025 18:25

Not needed it yet in London. I did have a hot bottle one night a couple of weeks ago.
Im sitting here with the window open now

landlordhell · 08/10/2025 18:43

Very mild this week. Central England.

Theimpossiblegirl · 08/10/2025 21:14

At the moment I'm happy to wrap up warm with layers and a blanket.
If it starts to feel damp I'll have to put the heating on, but cold I can handle.

Daphnedot · 18/10/2025 15:51

It's blooming chilly today. Mine is on

justasking111 · 18/10/2025 15:58

We've lit the fire. Dogs are lying in front of it 😁

Someone will be along soon to lecture you about that.

Not me. Wish I had a bloody fireplace. ☹️

Can't you put one in?

No unfortunately not permitted where I am now. But had one in my last couple of homes and loved them. Totally different lifestyle now. Have views though to make up for no fire/fireplace 😉

caringcarer · 18/10/2025 22:24

I ask Alexa what the temperature is.

What you burning? We were going to light ours, till advised that burning wood is as bad as smoking, and our wood shed has well over a ton of kiln dried oak Ugh!

We've a new log burner. Passes all the emissions tests. Very efficient. It's the dryness of the wood that is important. DH built two log stacking sheds. So rather like a composter we buy, split and stack in the late spring has all summer to dry out. We're still using last year's wood. Oak is harder to get going but three smallish logs last all afternoon and evening. I don't like the heating on all day the house runs too hot.

Friends have bought a big ol' house in the country. They're putting in a heat pump, solar panels and augmenting with oil central heating and two log burners. An interesting experiment I'm keen to see their energy bills.

Guess yours might be ok, were in a cottage our open fires are older,
heard wood fires are going to be banned? Sadly we will be using our central heating this winter, ..frustrating as we might have nearer two ton of kiln dried oak, but got to put our health first. Things changing so fast.

Well if they are not banned yet then I'd use the wood. I burned kiln dried wood in my log burner and they were fine, hardly any ash either. I love an open fire but sadly where I've moved to they are not allowed. Think people more likely to get sick from breathing in the clouds of vapour emitted from folks walking/standing around that you walk through and from eating all the crap in foods these days than burning a fire a few days a year. I do wonder how those of us born 50s and earlier ever survived 🤔 No heating other than coal fires, stews on the stove for days, no sell by dates, playground equipment set into concrete with metal slides that got red hot in the summer, had no safety rails and were as high as a house 😁

Alexa has no idea what the temperature in your home is.

Yes it does if you have the right model.

I just asked my Echo and it seems I don't have a model with a temp sensor.
Ah well, the meat thermometer does the job!

Atsocta · 19/10/2025 23:19

What Alexa model tells the temperature? As mine doesn’t 😳

Very true …

wavingfuriously · 20/10/2025 00:23

OhNoNotSusan · 20/10/2025 09:23

The newer ones do(5th generation). Mine don't either but as my heat pump controller does it's not worth upgrading.

Just wondered how you were doing OP as regards resisting putting the heating on.
In the past i've generally managed to be pretty Spartan and lived a reasonable life with the thermostat set so the heating comes on in the evenings when the temperature dips below 14. But this year I seriously thought I was going to have a heart attack induced by the cold so have reset the thermostat and reset my mindset. I will never be comfortable heating my home but I hope to prevent damage to my health from the cold going forward.
