Last night for a few hours.

Why does he need to do it? Just switch it on yourself and see if it works. If you have your regular service there shouldn’t be an issue, but it’s not hard to check. I live alone and seem to manage.

It's upstairs, I'm disabled so can't get up there I'm afraid

You don't need to explain yourself.

JustStopItNorasaurus · 27/09/2025 17:27

Well I am resisting hard but today has been tough. Dcs are studying in their rooms. DH is clearing out the garage so he is warm and fine. I've been watching netflix on the sofa under blankets. Last year we thought 19 degrees was the sweet spot for house warmth. Today it's 15.5 but I really cannot tolerate the thought of putting heating on before October. Last week we had some news that will see the loss of a very major portion of our income for at least 6 months or more so I simply can't justify putting on heat if we can find a way with layers and blankets.

I have very old cashmere fingerless gloves I bought a couple of christmases ago. Turtle Doves if anyone is interested. They have helped also.

I don't objectively think 15.5 degrees in the house is cold. It's just that it's been so warm this summer that the difference now feels cold.

Ah. Ok. Shouldn’t jump to conclusions.
In that case he needs to get off his behind and do it! Also - I can do mine from downstairs with a roving thermostatic control. Could you get one fitted so you aren’t reliant in future?

15.5 is definitely cold. Blankets wouldn’t cut it for me at that temp, not even heated ones. My nose would be freezing! I sympathise with the concern about cost though.

JustStopItNorasaurus · 27/09/2025 17:36

Thanks. Interestingly (or not!) DH is a pensioner and has had WFA removed. We are technically a middle to higher earning household... but as I said will be losing a major portion of income for an unspecified period of time which i am very anxious about. I honestly think if we are worrying about costs then I simply cannot imagine how stressful it is for others.

Can you really not afford to bang the heating on for a couple of hours to take the chill off? Sitting in layers and blankets, going to bed at 8pm etc seems pretty miserable.

Agree. If you are losing WFA this year you can surely afford a bit of heating, just on what DH must be getting.

JustStopItNorasaurus · 27/09/2025 18:04

yes and as I said, due to circumstances we are also losing a vast bulk of our income for an unspecified period of time. That makes our situation precarious in other ways.

JustStopItNorasaurus · 27/09/2025 18:05

And the topic of the thread is 'is anyone trying not to turn on the heating'. We are trying not to turn on the heating.

In her opening post OP explains it's because she cannot afford to heat their home, and indeed most people have responded with that in mind.

Yes, a lot of higher income households are struggling. So it must be awful for those earning less. What's rarely mentioned is that energy costs don't just affect heating. Even if you don't mind substituting blankets for heating, everyone needs some hot water, and to operate a washing machine, to have lights, and to either charge devices or use a computer. So, yes, it's sad that some can't afford heating, but it doesn't stop there, and to focus only on heating underplays their difficulty.

TheLastOfTheMohicans · 27/09/2025 19:29

No, it's been a bit cold here working from home, North West England, but I am sat in shorts and tshirt so can't complain, blanket is fine for watching tv in the evening, let's see how far I can get into October before turning heating on, I'm sure kids will be moaning before long

waltercrimble · 27/09/2025 19:38

i have had mine on this week as it’s been freezing in the morning. Cold enough to defrost the car. It’s chilly tonight but managing with oodies and blankets.

There are loads of threads about energy/utility costs increasing. There’s always a thread just about heating at this time of year.

I wasn't referring to MN threads, but to the media. Loads said about heating, but no mention of the bills that can be run up even with none. That said, there's rightly some concern re level of standing charges, though it's likely nothing will happen.

Ah right. I guess the impact of no heating is greater than no clean clothes or a clean body

Though I’d really like to think this is not the middle to high earners.

I woke up freezing the other night too, the nights have been in single figures though. I'm South East also.

Tbh I wonder if my thermostat is right. But it felt cold. I was cold. So I put it on

i don’t get those who moan they are cold but don’t put the heating on

doesn’t need to be on for hours all day.

Okiedokie123 · 27/09/2025 21:06

It’s 18c in my house atm. Zero need for heating but I have put on a jumper. Waiting for as long as possible before putting on the heating each Autumn means I save £££. Jumpers, leggings, tights, leg warmers, cozy blankets are my preferred option.

Eurovisionwatcherbecauselol · 27/09/2025 21:08

I won't till December

JCS1000 · 27/09/2025 23:51

No, the utility bills are once again set to rise on 1st October (they are still being allowed to get away with it which imo is absolutely criminal). I currently have a blanket on me on the sofa and an electric blanket on the bed.
