……left leaning or right leaning? I think it is more right leaning-AIBU?

Reallybadidea · 21/09/2025 14:19

Until recently (have been on MN 20 years) I'd have said left-leaning, but now I'd say right. I think the gender critical discussions have attracted more people who are right of centre.

Summerhillsquare · 21/09/2025 14:21

It leans to property owning middle class types certainly, and AIBU brings out the radgie ones especially at the moment. It's also quite hostile to environmentalists.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 21/09/2025 14:22

Previously left, now centre, inching towards right.
People don't hold back on an anonymous forum.
In RL, I'm sure they sit centre/left for fear of being labelled far right.

arethereanyleftatall · 21/09/2025 14:23

I think life in general has had people running away in horror as the left have become more and more ridiculous, unworkable and entitled. The trans farce has definitely played a part in it. So I don’t think it’s mumsnet per se, more everyone.

MaybeIf · 21/09/2025 14:25

Right of centre, slightly watered-down Thatcherite Tory, lower-middle class.

Obviously lots of people not in this group on Mn, but I would say this is the heartland in terms of current politics.

Deepbluesea1 · 21/09/2025 14:28

used to be more to the left (or felt like that) but there has been quite some change. a lot of posts which reflect the right wing agenda these days.

MrsSkylerWhite · 21/09/2025 14:30

Not sure. Hard to tell with a large influx of new posters expressing right-wing views recently whether they are all posting in good faith.

NamelessNancy · 21/09/2025 14:30

I've noticed a move to the right since I've been here. Depressingly (to me at least) it mirrors what I've seen irl/the media too.

Uncertaintyisreal · 21/09/2025 14:30

Definitely left leaning.
Moving more right wing over time, reflecting the country. But still left of the majority outside of Mumsnet. Brexit and a future reform type government seem(ed) a real surprise to a lot of people here.

CurlewKate · 21/09/2025 15:32

The poll is leaning heavily towards the right-but the comments are heavily towards the left. I wonder why that is.

OP posts:
Croakymccroakyvoice · 21/09/2025 15:35

Used to be left leaning but not anymore. There seems to have been an influx of strong right wing voices in recent years.

Because the relationship between your question and the poll isn’t immediately clear?

You mean —

vote YANBU you think think Mn is right-wing
and
vote YABU if you think Mn is left-wing

SpigTheFish · 21/09/2025 15:38

Definitely left leaning but it used to be right leaning.

BuffetTheDietSlayer · 21/09/2025 15:39

I don’t believe the vast majority of the recent influx of right wing posters are genuine. They tend to only post on politics, abortion or racist threads, they use the same wording as each other, often similar crappy usernames too, many don’t even write as native British English speakers.

Your voting options are not clear so I do not know which one I am supposed to choose!

Why are you asking? Seems a rather goady Q tbh

oneoneone · 21/09/2025 15:46

As a property-owning middle class type, who's been moving from centre to steadily left of centre (and who thinks a few trans people are the least of our societal problems) I'm finding it increasingly leaning right. Whether these posters are genuine or not, I don't know, but I'm finding it concerning for our direction of travel.

InsectsMatter · 21/09/2025 15:48

mumsnet is run by and read chiefly by the lanyard wearing classes; that is middle class, wealthy REVELS (rich enough to even vote Labour).

derxa · 21/09/2025 15:49

I would say more right wing than in the past. There is still a solid core of regular posters on the left who brook no argument and denigrate anyone who doesn’t agree.

Sorry-I thought I was quite clear “I think it is right leaning-AIBU?” How should I have phrased it?

OP posts:
megachocs7 · 21/09/2025 16:02

Left

stayathomer · 21/09/2025 16:02

I always think it’s mad how people think there’s more middle class/ rich people on mn, I’d think there’s more poverty/ people trying to scrape by (and I’ve always felt sorry for the wealthier people who get told to read the room!!)

ScholesPanda · 21/09/2025 16:07

Personally I think MN has had a more middle class, London-centric demographic - left leaning socially, less so economically. Probably centrist to centre left overall.

Recently, I'd say it's become much more right leaning, and much more infused with American politics. Whether that's new posters or in tune with movements in RL - not sure.
