Sick of hearing about "bits"

HelloDenise · 20/09/2025 01:11

I'm fed up of reading about people going to B&M, Home Bargains, Next, M&S, the pound shop or wherever to get some autumn .... BITS!

Throws, pumpkins, candles, cushions, foliage, wreaths and garlands ARE NOT BLOODY BITS! They're whole, substantial items, not bits of items .

Where the hell did this come from? Or should I be on Pedants' corner?

What is even worse is when that is shortened to "bite" As in do you want to go out for a bite. Ahhhhhh

Edited

Agreed. Hideous. Going out for a brew and a bite would send me over the edge.

Foundationns · 20/09/2025 08:47

There’s nothing wrong with eating those THINGS , or FOODS , or SNACKS. the objection is to calling them BITS.

Exactly. Presumably they are whole sausage rolls rather than bits of one?

AliceMaforethought · 20/09/2025 09:02

100% with you and anyone who disagrees is a moron who doesn't know how to speak proper English. So many people speak appalling English, they mangle our language with stupid expressions like 'bits' and 'picky tea'. They are also the sort of people who buy endless cheap tat, so it makes sense, really.

Shineonyoucrazy · 20/09/2025 09:03

I can’t stand this crap. It’s all horrible, enriches China where it’s all made and will end up in landfill. I’ve just ordered some lovely English soap for my autumn treat. We have had our cushions and throws for 15 years, when they fall apart and graduate to cat bedding I’ll have to buy more.

pizzaHeart · 20/09/2025 09:04

DiscoNights · 20/09/2025 01:23

I find this very irritating too. Bits just makes me think of genitals.

me too
trying to imagine bits in autumn style 🤔

AliceMaforethought · 20/09/2025 09:04

Owly11 · 20/09/2025 06:33

Isn’t it from bits and bobs?

Another silly, mindless buzz phrase.

But why? My teen mainly exists on this kind of food, quiche, sausage rolls, bread sticks, homous, carrot sticks, cheese. It covers food groups and she can prep it herself. I know it's a MN sin but we don't all eat round the table together so it's convenient. Why does it make people so murderous?

Personally I'd get that lass sat round a table and get some lamb chops down her neck. No more bits for her.

grooveraidiator · 20/09/2025 09:05

DiscoNights · 20/09/2025 01:35

Did you pop into Morrisons to get a picky tea?

don't you even dare say picky bits or picky tea! 😂

Coconutter24 · 20/09/2025 09:05

RitzyMcFee · 20/09/2025 08:39

I’d say ‘I’m going some decorations for autumn’ then. It’s not a few bits. It’s £50 of stuff at least.

A tin of baked beans isn’t for autumn though so I think it’s fair to say I’m going for some bits, that way it covers everything

You're so correct. People don't want to hear it, though. They would rather buy utter crap from some Chinese drop shipper and then whine and plead poverty when people say that is irresponsible and bad for the planet. Because it is too expensive to buy less, clearly.

KnickerlessParsons · 20/09/2025 09:06

It’s “picky bits” that I hate.

DiscoBob · 20/09/2025 09:25

'Bits of tat'? It's kind of trying to either emphasise their crappiness, or detract from the ridiculous amount you're going to spend on tasteless rubbish.

Onefortheroad25 · 20/09/2025 09:28

I dunno if it’s just here in Ireland but ‘Going to Penneys for the few bits’ is a very popular phrase.

The Irish have their own rules. We can't interfere.

Gulliver88 · 20/09/2025 09:36

I'm with you...
"Let's go shopping for bits for a picky tea "
Ahhhhhhhhgghhhhhhhhhh

Mokel · 20/09/2025 09:38

I do not change my decor, bedding etc during the year. Only time I have seasonal stuff out is Christmas and that is a tree, a few wooden ornaments from Tiger.

Where do people put all this excess crap outside the seasons? If they bin it after a couple of months, then they have more money than sense.

Oh my Xmas tree and its decs are 15-16 years old.

Mokel · 20/09/2025 09:43

DancyNancy · 20/09/2025 08:49

Lol. I also hate when people say
"A bite to eat"

We took a drive down to the beach and went for a bite to eat in the pub on the way back

Some people actually go to eateries for a bite to eat - they have just one bite and leave the rest.

Mokel · 20/09/2025 09:44

I use the term grazing plate, mini buffet. Picky tea sounds like you have 4 year olds coming round.

Lifeinthepit · 20/09/2025 09:46

Grazing plate isn't ideal. Like a herd of cows. I suppose at least you didn't use the word platter.

It's a tricky one.

Blueskiesandrainbows · 20/09/2025 09:46

OH moans when I say ‘ I’ll have a bit more milk in my tea’ he says it should be a ‘a drop’ I still say bit to annoy him 🤭

Goditsmemargaret · 20/09/2025 09:47

Yes, same, grrrr idiots!

I'm similarly enraged by hospitality staff telling me that I'm so welcome every time they give me a coffee, my change or whatever. Not just welcome but SO welcome. Get a grip.

Totally thought this thread was going to be about genitalia

Misses point of thread

I thought it was going to be about 'picky bits' or whatever the expression is when mumsnetters serve picky bits like humus, sliced peppers, prosciutto, olives etc

Bestfootforward11 · 20/09/2025 09:50

Agree!
I also don’t like the word ‘haul’. It just seems to mean someone went shopping. But I suspect I’m just a bit grumpy!

stovokor · 20/09/2025 09:51

So ‘bits’ is essentially a new word for ‘tat’ ?

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 20/09/2025 09:52

Surely it’s just a shortening of “bits and pieces”, which means an assortment of small items. Language is fluid, words change meaning over time.

If you read Lady Chatterly’s Lover you’ll come across a paragraph that contains the c word about six times. It does not mean the same thing it does today.
