Which country will you move to if Reform win next election?

Faced with the prospect of NHS being sold off, ICE-style immigration raids and deportations, emboldened bigots, changes to the school curriculum, public services dessimated, leaving EHCR, I honestly think I'll have no choice but to leave. I don't want to but I couldn't bring DC up in fascist state.

Luckily my DH, DC and I are all dual nationals of an EU country so we have an escape route if needed and this country goes to the dogs.

Where would you go?

But it's not a shake up.if country is in ruins after. No NHS, everyone poorer, US corporations allowed in to pillage everything. There will be nothing left

You could say exactly this about the mess the Tories left the country in.
We're all still here hoping for better despite a worsening of almost everything you list during their period in power.

Greece have recently become really strict on not allowing illegal immigrants so you probably won't want to go there

Why do you assume it would be illegal? I mean Fromage has certainly made it harder for people to go on holiday, let alone, study, work or live overseas but Greece haven't barred us yet.

You definitely don't come across as hysterical.

ICE-style immigration raids and deportations

Sorry, what's the difference between ICe raids and HO raids which have been happening since I can remember (usually were result of someone reporting suspicion)?

Spookyspaghetti · 15/09/2025 21:39

There is nowhere go where fascism can’t follow. We have to stand up to fascism and racism in our own country, just as we have in the past.

Teaching critical thinking in schools would be a start.

intrepidpanda · 15/09/2025 21:40

Good luck. English are as welcome in other countries as Albanian drug dealers are in the UK.

Gonners · 15/09/2025 21:40

MrG is dual Canadian/British, but we're not married despite having been together for going-on 30 years. About 15 years ago I did drop into the immigration office in Montreal to ask if they'd let me in. I even speak passable French! They were quite cagey about it. I asked "What if we were married?" and they said that made absolutely no difference. 😆

So are you all saying you would prefer Labour to stay in ? I'll be voting for reform.

I am leaving because of Labour.

Fizzer5 · 15/09/2025 21:40

We are English. We know that we have been here since the early 1700s. Direct Descent Father to son. We were farm workers, gardeners, labourers and soldiers. One Grandfather went to South African War in 1900. He added a year to his age to be accepted. He joined up to escape poverty. He was better fed and better clothed.
We are not, repeat NOT moving. We are not going to be like those in the boats. They should go back and fight for their country not run with their tails between their legs.

Our adult children are going to stay and tough it out as well.

I think Scotland could be a safe haven still as they are much more progressive up there. Although I think Reform also want to concentrate more power back in Westminster, not sure what that would mean for devolution.

I actually live in Wales right now. For the Senedd elections in 2026 I'm voting Plaid Cymru. I'm not a Welsh nationalist but they're only party that cares about Wales

Isn’t that a bit racist ???

Cardiaga · 15/09/2025 21:41

ErrolTheDragon · 15/09/2025 20:39

I’m going nowhere. Even if I could (at 64 with no dual citizenship we can’t) I’m not going to run away, or give in to the likes of farage (or Corbyn for that matter).

I'm with Errol. Nowhere I can flee to would be safer for my kids than where I am and I am very happy to devote myself to pushing back against the likes of Farage. My father fought in a war to get rid of asshats like him. Staying and standing against fascists and racists is the least I can do. If you want to leg it, do that, but consider this. Wherever your dual citizenship takes you, you will be the refugees/outsiders. And the tide of right wing authoritarian populism is unlikely to leave any country untainted in the long run. You can take refuge in another country but be prepared to be on the other side of host/refugee 'division' if you do, and that's the side with less leverage and fewer allies.

We have Irish passports so that's one option. If I had the money I quite fancy Switzerland.

I think people with a British passport are allowed to move to Ireland too.

There won't be an election for another three years! A lot can happen in that time.

Exactly.

Whoever it is in power, at this point of the political cycle, they are unpopular!

Crikeyalmighty · 15/09/2025 21:44

@Buddingbudde well actually a lot of Farage supporters do want endless pension rises and not hitting benefits ( but only the ones that they get mind) - the problem in the UK is people want Scandinavian style services and standards but on Dubai tax rates. Far too many want to do ‘stuff on the side’ or be crafty on benefit claims and I can assure you not all these are ‘lefties’ either - a lot of people on the right , especially in their own enterprises are more than happy to fiddle their tax, extract 100% value out companies and then dump them , or do cash in hand work, scam others and yet many act as if everyone else not like them is a scrounger. Problem is Farage could be fiddling stuff left right and centre, not doing his parliamentary job and vast swathes of his support wouldn’t care one jot , because they would be the same —

It's true that there are xenophobes in other countries, but not everyone in other countries is a xenophobe.

I'm English since the 1300s (just live in Wales) but what does that have to do with anything???

I'm sick of all the nationalist crap too. I'm English because I happened to be born on this island nearly 40 years ago. Why am I supposed to be filled with pride about it and drape myself in a flag

Speak for yourself. If you have money and are skilled you can go anywhere you like. As Fromage will find out, when most of the top 20% fuck off and there is no-one left to pay for all the benefits of those who voted for him.

Crikeyalmighty · 15/09/2025 21:46

@intrepidpanda I think you will find not the case depending on the individuals - we found the Dutch most welcoming when chatting through with us about it

I am EU citizen, husband is british and we are making plans to move too. UK is a dump full of hate, what started off as anti illegal immigration protests ,now all the immigrants get whacked with the same stick. My family with young children has been stalked, harassed and my children have had to witness hate crimes over me having an accent when I speak-thats it,thats the only reason these looneys need to hate someone. I have had even a doctor making xenophobic comments aka why dont you go back where you came from.

shuggles · 15/09/2025 21:46

I think people with a British passport are allowed to move to Ireland too.

You can walk into Ireland if you like because of the common travel area, and the complete absence of border controls at the land border between UK and Ireland.

But having a British passport doesn't give you any rights in Ireland, and it doesn't give you a right to work there or access healthcare.

ReignOfError · 15/09/2025 21:47

I’d have choices, thankfully. The easiest one of them is the US, but I’ve no desire to live there again.

I could, on current income and other requirements, get a [non-lucrative]visa for several European countries, and, of course, there are loads of places outside Europe. Mexico is high on our lists, but I’d likely go for Spain because it’s easier to see family (my kids are both Irish by birth, so have lots of options within the EU).
