Which country will you move to if Reform win next election?

Krenonges · 15/09/2025 20:21

Faced with the prospect of NHS being sold off, ICE-style immigration raids and deportations, emboldened bigots, changes to the school curriculum, public services dessimated, leaving EHCR, I honestly think I'll have no choice but to leave. I don't want to but I couldn't bring DC up in fascist state.

Luckily my DH, DC and I are all dual nationals of an EU country so we have an escape route if needed and this country goes to the dogs.

Where would you go?

Just not running away will help.

If you leave the country to the crazies, how is that a good thing?

I’ll do my bit in my small corner and stand up and be counted.

It’s easy to say when you are part of the majority that Reform and their voters are fine with.

I am not one of the “I will leave the country the minute Reform gets in” crowd. But nor am I going to be naive and my back-up plan is firmly in place if it turns into an utter shit show.

Bluelilacbella · 17/09/2025 10:10

As is Germany, France, Italy, Hungary etc…..

Yep. I am genuinely alarmed and scared.

I only mentioned the Netherlands specifically because lots of people were saying they’d move there and it’s a country I know a bit about.

but yes, the whole world is going in a scary direction.

Bluelilacbella · 17/09/2025 10:13

JHound · 17/09/2025 09:52

so you’ll move to a country that was literally run by Nazis

Jesus Christ that’s weak.

It’s not that weak - the AfD is gaining popularity massively in Germany!

PandoraSocks · 17/09/2025 10:13

EasternStandard · 17/09/2025 09:59

Not sure that’s still the case. Labour are losing a huge amount to Reform. Wales shows this in polling and the red wall

In Wales, Labour voters are going more to PC than Reform. The Senedd Caerphilly by-election is predicted to be a win for PC from Labour. PC 35% Reform 29% and Labour 24%.

Reform has won some council by-elections in Wales, but has failed more than it has succeeded.

Polls for next year point to a PC/Labour coalition as PC is predicted to have the biggest number of seats (by one, I think) but won't work with Reform. A Reform/Tory coalition wouldn't have enough seats.

How would you fight to change things?
Beyond voting, there is not a lot people can do.

There is a lot that people can do to improve things, eg
-Get involved in local issues that you care about

  • Join a political party that is not based on selling out/ hate
  • Joining a campaigning organisation/ trade union
  • Write to your MP and local councillors (they represent all constituents not just the ones that voted them in)
  • Demonstrate your values and not being a bystander to hate
  • Going on strike/ supporting strikers
  • Going on marches
  • At the extreme end, peaceful disruption/ sabotage à la Extinction Rebellion

In short, doing things that people have always done when they want to change things. Apathy is a gift to the people who are looking to destabilise our society.

Very lucky that I can go live in Australia should I wish. 😎

Hardline border policy and different healthcare model. It is odd how people run to what they seem to be opposing.

It always amazes me to see people post this sort of anecdote, and yet see no problem with the society we’ve built.

If you read it in a Dickens novel you’d be horrified at the way things used to be.

Can you explain more please?

My comment quoted and answered the poster who claimed that although one immigrant may make a positive net contribution, this isn't really the case because they all bring four family members who are a drain.

I was giving a real example of where this isn't the case. Can't be the only arrangement like this in our country.

The same poster also still believes that immigrants are ‘taking our jobs’. I pointed out that job adverts locally do not show this. There are plenty of unfilled, repeatedly advertised vacancies.

Why do you assume that that person has an issue with a different healthcare model and border controls?

Also Australia’s “hardline border policy” has resulted in an immigration rate and immigrant population that is significantly higher than the UK.

And the Australian Reform equivalent (One Nation) is nowhere near as popular.

EstherGreenwood63 · 17/09/2025 10:25

@JHound indeed! Also, I have lived in many different countries and I find it MUCH easier to deal with policies I may not agree with when it is not my home nation. So, there's that too.

Would be happy with both here? The same healthcare model and border control?

EstherGreenwood63 · 17/09/2025 10:28

@Blossomtoes sadly not a single country in the whole wide world where they are not.

ClareBlue · 17/09/2025 10:29

I'm sick of people saying that a Reform government would be a facist state. I wouldn't support them, but to say they are facist completely demeans and insults those that have suffered and died under truly facist regiemes. The most punitive immigration policies in Europe are in the idolised bastion of liberal policies, Denmark. Safer places to live like Poland have very conservative societal norms, Large French Cities are more dangerous than any UK city. If you have a problem with Reform and nationalism then go to Hungry or Slovakia or Serbia and see what nationalism can really do. If you feel unsafe in London try a week in Frankfurt or Berlin.

I have nowhere to go. DH could go to the U.S. with work but I’m not moving anywhere. I doubt it would be as bad as you think.

it would be worse

Ask that person.

But stop assuming that anybody with issues with Reform is against border controls / is wedded to an NHS.

Also the UK has border controls. I have a ton of immigrant friends none of whom simply waltzed into Britain. And for those who acquired British nationality / long term leave to remain it was a lot harder than it was for me to get my 2nd nationality which took a mere 4 years and was easy.

As I said Australia’s “hardline border policy” has resulted in a higher immigration rate and a higher immigrant population.

Just over 30% of Australians are immigrants. How do you think the UK would react to a growth in the immigrant population to 30%…..

Bluelilacbella · 17/09/2025 10:35

I’m asking you as you posted you’d leave. So if you see their policies as good, which is fine if you do, would you be ok with the same system and policies here for healthcare and borders?

Holidaytimeyay · 17/09/2025 10:40

Canopop · 15/09/2025 20:37

This is scaremongering I don’t know anyone in real life who supports reform I really hope it isn’t a thing 😢

I have the opposite experience, people I thought were reasonable now talking about immigration etc in a Reform type of way. It’s scary, I was away recently in a European country and all the people I met, even the ones that were not from UK, mentioned UK immigration to me as a major issue in a very negative manner.
I really didn’t think that Reform stood a chance but I am now worrying that it is a real possibility.
To answer op’s question, I don’t think that there is anywhere I could go. I have lived overseas previously but that was pre brexit.

JHound · 17/09/2025 10:42

Bluelilacbella · 17/09/2025 10:35

Read the post you quoted and you will answer your own question.

I have never said I am wedded to the NHS nor have I ever said I support open borders.

I also did not say I would leave solely on Reform accessing power.

So that’s three strawmen in one post which is impressive.

I have no issue with the UK having an Australian model but it already does. You cannot just waltz into the UK. People can claim asylum but you can also claim asylum in Australia.

ClareBlue · 17/09/2025 10:46

Sskka · 16/09/2025 21:10

I don’t think it gets much more extreme than ours in fairness. Maybe Canada.

You are wrong. Denmark take assets of migrants, including personal items like jewellery, before they can claim any support in Denmark. They have housing areas around Copenhagan that are marginalised deliberately for migrants. They process claims very quickly and have strict send back to first safe country they entered, no prolonged legal actions. They have strict language requirements too and Danish is hard to learn. There is a reason the last time I was in Copenhagen for a week I saw 3 POC in the city centre. The only place I've been to in Europe less diverse out of 20 odd Countries is Serbia.

I think that is for Westminster rather than Senedd.

SENEDD POLL | Labour plunge to just 14%

🟩 PLAID – 30% (-)
➡️ REF – 29% (+4)
🔴 LAB – 14% (-4)
🔵 CON – 11% (-2)
🟠 LD – 6% (-1)
🟢 GRN – 6% (+1)
