I’ve noticed I’ve got a favourite seat in the living room and it’s accumulated a few of my things on and around it like my handbag, sweets, book, medication (because it’s the only thing that helps me remember to take it) a couple of letters that I opened and haven’t put away yet and a pack of baby wipes.
Dh is watching the game just now and I’ve sat down in my spot and accidentally knocked my medication off the armrest. I turned to dh and said “ do you know what would be handy, a little table next to me so I can put all my bits and bobs on” 🤦🏻‍♀️ my life flashed before my eyes before the words finished leaving my mouth. I’m 41 by the way how has nobody told me about this monumental moment.

Desperately searching for a pair of jeans with elasticated waist.

Saying oof everything I get up

Taking my own cushion to a restaurant....

New assistant head at the school where I work born the same year as my son.

My late mother looking out at me when I look in the mirror.

Get baffled by talk of "90s nostalgia". How can you be nostalgic for something that was last week? Oh hang on....

RavenIsOnHerWay · 14/09/2025 20:36

Talking to a lady who was in labour on 9/11… her son is now 24😱 it took me ages to process that.
I have an “old ladies corner” of our corner sofa, consisting of pills, glasses, bits of chocolate, my books, bits of sewing etc. DP has the old man’s table… glasses, bottle opener, pills, sweets etc. Do we all do this?
Don’t get me started on the bedside table… the pills, the books, the glasses, the drink, the Vicks vapour rub, the hand cream, the bloody Voltarol…

I remember being in my 20s and having a chat with my (significantly) older sister. She'd told me that Clarks shoes had completely changed from when we were kids and were now very stylish. When I next went shopping, I nipped into Clarks and was shocked to see the same old fashioned shoes as always. It took a few minutes for the penny to drop...the shoes hadn't changed but my sister had!!

I’m finding it hard now to do the gym class I’ve been doing for about 7 years. I’m looking at yoga and Pilates instead.

Edited

Pilates is not for the weak.

Come on! You don't take a cushion, do you? Have you got back issues?

VielleTruite · 14/09/2025 20:49

I've always been surrounded by stuff on 'my' side of the sofa. I have a coffee table with a shelf underneath that is stuffed with medication, vitamins, supplements, a tin of Vaseline for dry lips, Nivea hand cream for crusty knuckles, a box of covid tests, a pot of cotton buds and assorted hair claws. Having to have a light-up magnifying glass to read certain print sizes. The need to assemble an assortment of weapons to get into that wretched plastic capsule packaging. Getting up at least twice in the night for the loo. Going to see the new Spinal Tap film and being aghast at how old they all look then realising it was 40 years ago when I saw the original! 😂

ThriveAT · 14/09/2025 20:49

Creakiness all around.

Pebbles16 · 14/09/2025 20:49

I sprained my knee this week, which would be painful at any age but in my mid 50s it's lingering and has many an "oof" moment every time I move.

ThriveAT · 14/09/2025 20:50

Lifeinthepit · 14/09/2025 18:45

Omg I've started doing this..I've convinced myself that all writing on labels have recently been deliberately shrunk just to save money or something. It cannot be age. I won't have it!

Is this a thing?

SuchiRolls · 14/09/2025 20:51

OP when you said about all the bits you’ve accumulated and getting the little table next to your chair…identical to my own mum who is 68. It’s a practical thing isn’t it 😅 She rarely leaves her chair unless she has to though hence the practicality of it. She specifically got one that fit snuggly in to the gap between her chair and the wall 😂

MistressoftheDarkSide · 14/09/2025 20:51

Realising at nearly 57 I'm the oldest member of my family on my Dad's side as the last two seniors shuffled off the mortal coil this year. I no longer have a grown up to ask things - apparently I am the grown up....😳

ThriveAT · 14/09/2025 20:53

StillAGoth · 14/09/2025 19:52

I'm 50. I bought an inflatable tent last year. It's not that I can't put up the normal pole tent anymore, I just can't be arsed anymore and would rather spend the time putting up fairy lights, bunting and layering rag rugs 😁

Oh, and I'm going to have to get varifocals at my next opticians appointment.

All of the above makes total sense. Good on you.

@ThriveATi went to the theatre last night with my own seat pad and walking stick. im 42 and disabled, but even if I weren’t I’m fairly slimmish (8st7) and chairs hurt my arse.

Fair enough.

Went for an eye test recently. I wear glasses for distance. Now apparently I am both long and short sighted at the same time. The very young Optician said 'it's nothing to worry about it's just your age, these things happen as our body starts to wear out". I am 41.

@Littletreefrog my eyes have been like that since I was a teen so don't worry it's not actually an age thing! 😂 I made it to my 30s before they stopped complimenting each other and start competing so now I need glasses

PrincessHoneysuckle · 14/09/2025 20:58

In the school I work in most teachers and all of SLT are younger than me.Im 45

ifIwerenotanandroid · 14/09/2025 20:59

When the GP asked if I could touch my toes & I could see he was getting ready to say reassuringly, "Never mind, we all get older" - but I asked, "Like a pilates rolldown?" & did a perfect one, with my hands folding up on the floor because I got down so far.

When people started patronising me while e.g. holding a door open or letting me go first; before I aged, they'd just do it in silence. I suppose it's sweet. I may start to milk it.

When I talk about taping programmes onto the recordable DVD thingy, whatever it's called.

When I became able to throw away/donate yarn because life's now too short to use it all. Don't touch my fabrics & paints, though!

JustineRobots · 14/09/2025 21:00

I was watching Emmerdale and Dawn’s year of birth was shown as 1997. I thought “That’s got to be a mistake - if she was born in 1997 she’d only be… oh. 28. Oh shit.”

I am… not 28.

When I said that to dh he looked at me with horror in his face 🤣 I thought I had at least another 20 years before I’d need this lol

Making a noise as I get up and sit back down. Not a groan as much, but an audible small grunt.
