My son has gone on the march

funkadelic · 13/09/2025 10:59

Hi, have been on here years but only lurk, don’t post. But today is the day.
I am in bits. My 22yr old DS is in London on this march. I am shaking and utterly appalled. We differ on politics massively and have done for some time. I work in education, have travelled and am bit of a lefty hippy but to be honest it’s becoming more about values and morals. He is fully immersed in the manosphere algorithm and I’ve always thought he is exploring himself and things and have chats about why he has the opinions he does and try and understand his point of view. I try not to belittle him but try and get him to critically think about things.
But this I can’t deal with. I am so upset that my son has gone to this, and that it is something that is so far away from me and my values, something that I thought I had instilled in him as well.
I am totally aware that it’s triggered embarrassment but that is my issue and I’m not putting that on him. He is still my son and I love him and his passion and interest in the world, just in something I believe is so wrong and makes me sad.
Please talk some sense into me.

The Metropolitan Police estimated that the number of people at the “Unite the Kingdom” rally was around 110,000

More than I thought, but not anywhere near a million.

Edited

Looking at the drone footage, this number is nonsense. Those people are packed in like sardines and it just kept going.

I do not want there to be that many people there. But if it is not over a million at least I would be shocked.

Why? Did you not understand what I was saying?

You asked who “we” is.

I asked if you know how “ “ these work. If you do then your question is answered.

I only see it from a few dimwits I happen to be connected with on social media. And they really are dimwits. My family, close friends and work colleagues know it’s all a nonsense.

What is a nonsense?

Muffinmam · 13/09/2025 15:15

There is nothing wrong with your son being conservative.

What specifically bothers you about his values and attitudes?

Exactly labelling is what the left do best to anyone who thinks differently from them. 3million people in London today....families all colours all races and churches. The lazy labelling is getting tired look at live things what actual people actually say do make your minds up then just saying

Exactly labelling is what the left do best to anyone who thinks differently from them

From the people who label everything they dislike “the left”, “the far left”, “W0kE”.

The poster didn’t claim that they on,y had policies about immigrati9n. She said they didn’t have any policies that would benefit the ordinary people and that people were voting solely based on immigration.
Their policies aren't costed though, and would leave Truss’s budget looking like a paragon of logical thinking and economic sense.

So many worddddds!!! People don’t do words these days. They just vote, enthusiastically and full of righteous indignation, and then when it all goes tits up, they find someone other than themselves to blame.

None from my clan 🤣🤣
But I do get what you're saying yes abhorrent things were done but I've no guilt simply because I didn't have a hand in it.

Exactly. The wannabe Guilt-Trippers are really clutching at straws. What is so sci-fi about it, is how they are spouting the HistoryReproachMantra as if they’ve had a cHip implanted. Zero awareness that they are talking to real people in 2025. Bonkers.

cardibach · 13/09/2025 15:17

OldMcDonaldHadABigMac · 13/09/2025 15:10

Nonsense. It's the fault of both. I know, I've done cash in hand work fot a short period of time in the past - I knew it was wrong but did it anyway.

The level of wage wasn’t your fault thoigh. Some one chose what to pay you, and if it was exploitative, that’s on them. The argument is about whether immigration undercuts wages. It doesn’t. Employers paying less than minimum wage, or cash in hand to avoid tax implications, undercuts wages that you’ve done it (assuming for a moment you aren't an asylum seeker) actually shows that it isn’t about immigration at all.

Catssuddenlyappear · 13/09/2025 15:17

OhCrumbsWhereNow · 13/09/2025 15:03

Not soley based on immigration - they do have a manifesto and policies on a whole raft of things.

Personally I am looking forward to seeing how they get on in government... can't be worse than any of the latest options.

So yep, I'll be voting for them just because why not. Shake things up a bit.

So which of their policies do you like then?

(If you're voting for Reform, even if you don't think of yourself as racist, most of their candidates are - you're an ally of racists)

Whenever anyone uses woke as an insult I know pretty much anything else they say can be dismissed as it'll just be stiff they're parroting from GB news/ the mail/telegraph etc

Lots of Scots involved in running the British Empire I'm afraid.

But yes, like you, none of us have anything to atone for and yet plenty of people would argue somehow that we do.

Well being Irish we've been battered for centuries. My granny as a child smuggled messages and ammunition in her dolls pram walking straight past the army. The local priest was in on many schemes. But no-one holds a grudge now.

110,000 according to the met, and I’d say that’s about right based on footage I’ve seen. I’ve seen million+ marches and this wasn’t one. I’ve yet to see a non-white face too, though I’m willing to believe there were some. Similarly for ‘families’, if by that you mean ‘with children’.

It’s the hypocrisy for me. I guess lazy labelling is fine when they do it.

I’ve read their manifesto. Its an exercise in telling people what they want to hear without any actual substance behind it and is completely pie in the sky.

Like all manifestoes then.

Not against individuals I agree. But some people see criticism of their country’s past as an attack on them personally.

Nestingbirds · 13/09/2025 15:22

Op, you are not balanced, educated nor do you have a god given right for your view to be more superior than your son’s. Maybe this is the real issue. You think you are ‘right’ rather than realising that his opinions matter and have value, that are equally as important as your own.

Your son is an adult and fully entitled to his own opinion and assessment. The fact you are trying to brainwash your son into aligning with your world view is really disturbing.

He is not an extension of you, he is his own person and is free to choose.

Have you ever sat down and asked him his views, his concerns and really listened?

campista · 13/09/2025 15:23

Oh, dear. Anyone saying there is too much, too fast immigration is considered far right and racist. Ludicrous. There is. I'm certainly not a racist, but I am a realist.

The pp said "I very much doubt if these workers you speak of are filing any tax returns !". You said that's not the fault of the employee, it's the fault of the employer. I'm saying that's incorrect; it was absolutely my fault (along with my employer). You can't say that the employee is completely innocent. I certainly wasn't, I knew it was wrong but I did it anyway. Regardless of if I accepted an exploitive wage.

Person responsibility, not blaming everyone else and making excuses for your wrongdoings, is important.

No. Most parties intend to get through the stuff they say they will. Labour are doing pretty well so far, as it happens. See the link.
I hope Reform don’t try to fulfil their manifesto if they do get in as it’ll be an absolute economic and social disaster.

Can you find any examples of anyone just saying they think there’s too much immigration being called far right? Because they always seem to have also expressed far right sentiment when I see it.
