My son has gone on the march

funkadelic · 13/09/2025 10:59

Hi, have been on here years but only lurk, don’t post. But today is the day.
I am in bits. My 22yr old DS is in London on this march. I am shaking and utterly appalled. We differ on politics massively and have done for some time. I work in education, have travelled and am bit of a lefty hippy but to be honest it’s becoming more about values and morals. He is fully immersed in the manosphere algorithm and I’ve always thought he is exploring himself and things and have chats about why he has the opinions he does and try and understand his point of view. I try not to belittle him but try and get him to critically think about things.
But this I can’t deal with. I am so upset that my son has gone to this, and that it is something that is so far away from me and my values, something that I thought I had instilled in him as well.
I am totally aware that it’s triggered embarrassment but that is my issue and I’m not putting that on him. He is still my son and I love him and his passion and interest in the world, just in something I believe is so wrong and makes me sad.
Please talk some sense into me.

Ally? We're not at war you know. My family, friends, neighbours are entitled to vote, believe in whatever they want to. It's called democracy 🙄

Allies aren't just a thing in war. It just means supporter of, or someone willing to help them achieve their ends.

No. Most parties intend to get through the stuff they say they will. Labour are doing pretty well so far, as it happens. See the link.
I hope Reform don’t try to fulfil their manifesto if they do get in as it’ll be an absolute economic and social disaster.

Economic and social disaster. What the heck do you think we're going through now.

Not soley based on immigration - they do have a manifesto and policies on a whole raft of things.

Personally I am looking forward to seeing how they get on in government... can't be worse than any of the latest options.

So yep, I'll be voting for them just because why not. Shake things up a bit.

Are you also looking forward to the end of the nhs and the choice of private healthcare or no healthcare?

Oh, dear. Anyone saying there is too much, too fast immigration is considered far right and racist. Ludicrous. There is. I'm certainly not a racist, but I am a realist.

It's not necessarily racist to be concerned about immigration but it is definitely racist if you define it in terms of 'they're all criminals' on the basis of their ethnicity.

The pp said "I very much doubt if these workers you speak of are filing any tax returns !". You said that's not the fault of the employee, it's the fault of the employer. I'm saying that's incorrect; it was absolutely my fault (along with my employer). You can't say that the employee is completely innocent. I certainly wasn't, I knew it was wrong but I did it anyway. Regardless of if I accepted an exploitive wage.

Person responsibility, not blaming everyone else and making excuses for your wrongdoings, is important.

i wasn’t making any points about tax as such. It was about whether immigrants undercuts wages that and lower wages. If they do it’s because employers exploit them or use them to lower their own tax.
It’s a pretty simple point, so I can only assume you are just pretending you haven’t got it to create argument. Enjoy.

This. There is nuance in this whole discussion. The left made a huge mistake in trying to shut down open discussion on this topic and several others. 'Racists! Transphobes!' And now they're finally seeing - too late - that those tactics only work for so long. Those tactics make otherwise normal, moderate people feel lied to and overlooked and in the end, furious. So they have a chance now to pivot and say 'We got this wrong and we're sorry. We shut down discussion of genuine and legitimate concerns. Tell us what you're afraid of. We will listen to you and we will try to address your concerns with sincerity.'

I really hope they do because if they don't, we're fucked.

Absolutely. If those with any concerns whatsoever about immigration right now continue to be shut down with accusations of being right wing/fascist/racist/flag shagger (all insults hurled at a poster simply asking about the march the other day), it will be the reason Reform get in next time.

PreciousTatas · 13/09/2025 15:28

Dd just said that some man from new Zealand who gave a speech ripped up the Palestinian and an Islamic flag, declaring war.

Very funny. Have you heard of the concept of 'collective guilt' at all?

Well it's refreshing to know that argument holds water, so now I can take action,

I will go to London and picket the Italian Embassy and demand reparation for all the gold, silver and tin the Romans stole during their 400 year occupation of the British Isles - known then as "Britannia".

You say you aim to be open minded and provide a balanced view to your DS but then have an issue if he doesn’t agree with you.

The fact that you think your views are right and his are wrong shows you are incredibly blinkered.

You are not acting in the way you claim you are. You are trying to indoctrinate him.

Closed minds such as yours are unhealthy. I’m afraid you are a poor role model for your DS.

This with bells on. I dare you believe in free speech. Let others speak freely even if you don't agree with it. He is entitled to his opinion.

110,000 according to the met, and I’d say that’s about right based on footage I’ve seen. I’ve seen million+ marches and this wasn’t one. I’ve yet to see a non-white face too, though I’m willing to believe there were some. Similarly for ‘families’, if by that you mean ‘with children’.

Yes there were non-white faces, but I think it will depend on the news source.

Yes, sounds like such a mature way of voting.

He's been groomed by corrupt America fascist grifters. He's in a cult. I wish you luck.

Hyperbole much?

Is there no way that anyone could find extended immigration unpalatable for other reasons?

The continual refrain that anyone who thinks differently is a bigot, fascist, or stupid and taken on by liars and grifters does no good to reasoned discussion ir community cohesion.

This level of partisan thinking leads to people getting shot ... he has a different opinion, a bad opinion, an evil opinion ... and then "devil, must destroy"

Not sure if it came to it that it would be a case of either or, what do other European countries do?

Doesn’t matter. Farage said he likes the US system. Not openly, obviously. But it’s what he wants (probably because someone connected is funding him).

'People getting shot' is pretty unlike in the UK.

I’ve got no idea but I’ll be very surprised if most of the people planning to vote for Reform have any idea about any of their policies other than immigration… and they’ll be in for some nasty surprises if they get what they voted for. Here we go again…

bombastix · 13/09/2025 15:37

Unfortunately it seems there is violence and rucking with the police now. Let’s hope this is contained (my family member is on duty this afternoon)

Livelovebehappy · 13/09/2025 15:38

He has different views from you atm
Chances are his views will change again in the future, and again etc etc. Young people actually take note of the world around them, whereas my generation usually automatically took on the views of our parents. Let him find his own path. As long as he's not taking part in fighting with the other iidotic mobs turning up, he'll be fine.

Lifelover16 · 13/09/2025 15:39

He is a 22 year old man and old enough to decide for himself, whether you agree or not.

Yes, I agree, what are people feverishly voting for. I watched some Vox Pops in Manchester on YT and the people they asked didn't really have any reasons just vague statements about the state of the country etc.

I would like to see a social insurance scheme brought in along the lines of the Netherlands or Israel.

The NHS is a sacred cow that has poor outcomes and doesn't work well in it's current form or provide value for money.

So yep, happy for that to happen.

Similar to Labour running on ‘change’ last time.

NotMyNigelFarage · 13/09/2025 15:40

EarthSight · 13/09/2025 13:49

@NotMyNigelFarage I don't understand their logic.

If one invites enough men from countries where women's rights are woeful, are under constant attack, and where street sexual harassment is normal.....what do they expect to happen? Do they think that they leave those attitudes, those norms at the door the moment they set foot in the U.K? It feels like epic gaslighting to me, or people who just want to bury their heads in the sand and pretend there's no issue there.

Edited

Agreed.

I just don't understand the recent trend of it being taboo to challenge misogynistic behaviour and sex crimes just because the perpetrators are a different ethnicity to us. It's their actions that are the issue, not the colour of their skin!

And it's not like it's exactly a new phenomenon. If you look at the Middle East, women are generally treated terribly there. The problem is middle class lefties in leafy suburbs who are happy to throw other women under the bus with their virtue signalling because they know there aren't likely to be many middle eastern men arriving in the village of Upper Piddlington anytime soon!

And not one single time has anybody on here ever responded to my mentioning the 1200 sexual assaults in one night. Well, not any of the people that think it's racist to suggest we need to be careful who we let into our country.

Is it not obvious why a person may be appalled that their son would march in favour of a cause they found abhorrent but not if the cause was one they did not? This isn't about being appalled a person is involved in political protest, its realising that your sons has beliefs that you may believe to be morally or ethically wrong. Which goes way beyond 'a difference of opinion' and indicates aspects of character and values that you may struggle to get past.

... has beliefs that you may believe to be morally or ethically wrong. Which goes way beyond 'a difference of opinion'

Morals and ethics are entirely a matter of opinion. They are subjective and vary over time and around the world, and even by situation.

I don't know why people ascribe moral virtue to their opinions and then hold them to be absolute truths that others should adhere to.

I don't kill things except by accident, from humans to animals. You probably kill wasps and eat meat.

Should you live by my ethics?
If you were my sister or daughter should I be appalled at your behaviour and call you out on MN or just be sad yet realise you have made your own choices on that subject?
