My son has gone on the march

funkadelic · 13/09/2025 10:59

Hi, have been on here years but only lurk, don’t post. But today is the day.
I am in bits. My 22yr old DS is in London on this march. I am shaking and utterly appalled. We differ on politics massively and have done for some time. I work in education, have travelled and am bit of a lefty hippy but to be honest it’s becoming more about values and morals. He is fully immersed in the manosphere algorithm and I’ve always thought he is exploring himself and things and have chats about why he has the opinions he does and try and understand his point of view. I try not to belittle him but try and get him to critically think about things.
But this I can’t deal with. I am so upset that my son has gone to this, and that it is something that is so far away from me and my values, something that I thought I had instilled in him as well.
I am totally aware that it’s triggered embarrassment but that is my issue and I’m not putting that on him. He is still my son and I love him and his passion and interest in the world, just in something I believe is so wrong and makes me sad.
Please talk some sense into me.

Exactly.
This is going on in York at the moment which is extremely popular for international tourists and students. These flaggers have been removing world flags that have been put up near the campus and installing even more of their own.

For goodness sake, do people even know what they are angry about - doubt it!

Goldenbear · 13/09/2025 14:21

It doesn't matter how old they are, the maternal instinct would be the same.

If they’re young you are probably not thinking about what young adults do outside a pretty safe march.

Plus it’s London, plenty of people there

rainingsnoring · 13/09/2025 14:25

Locutus2000 · 13/09/2025 13:19

There's no real discussion these days. Just people completely entrenched in their beliefs shouting at each other.

Exactly. That is the main problem imo, not the fact that people have different views. If you actually talk to people politely, you often find that they have good reasons for holding the views and that there is less difference than you might have initially assumed. Sure, there are some people with extreme views on every side but that is not the majority.

Endofyear · 13/09/2025 14:25

I'll be honest, I have 5 adult sons and I'd be bloody horrified if they went on a march organised by Tommy Robinson 😒 but as both me and DH are from immigrant backgrounds, it's unlikely (but not impossible) that they could have been drawn into that.

If I were you, I'd do my best to stay calm and not go on a massive rant at him, however tempting. Be open to discussion and making your points clearly when you disagree, but also listening. You can't change his beliefs but you can try and keep him open to looking at immigration from all angles, good and bad.

StandFirm · 13/09/2025 14:26

flyingsquirrelsagogo · 13/09/2025 14:23

What do you actually think the march is about?
It was organised by SLY and has Steve Bannon and Katie Hopkins speaking. That tells you all you need to know about the kind of March it is.
if people don’t know that then they haven’t bothered to do much research into what they are actually marching for.

'Steve Bannon and Katie Hopkins speaking'
aka International Fuckers Inc.
Bannon is a bona fide, ideological neo-Nazi. He knows how to build a following though, got to hand him that.

Have been watching the march being streamed on various YT channels. Looks great! Can't wait to hear Bishop Cai Dewar and other speakers. Very strong Christian presence.

what is christian about this?
unbelievable.

WishinAndHopin · 13/09/2025 14:27

YABVVVVU.

Your son is a person in his own right and a grown man, not an extension of you. He's allowed to have his own values, morals and opinions. Stop being so controlling and self-righteous, and trying to force your beliefs down his throat.

BurntBroccoli · 13/09/2025 14:28

EarthSight · 13/09/2025 13:49

@NotMyNigelFarage I don't understand their logic.

If one invites enough men from countries where women's rights are woeful, are under constant attack, and where street sexual harassment is normal.....what do they expect to happen? Do they think that they leave those attitudes, those norms at the door the moment they set foot in the U.K? It feels like epic gaslighting to me, or people who just want to bury their heads in the sand and pretend there's no issue there.

Edited

Overall crime rates are down. Surely they should have risen due to accepting more immigrants if immigrants are more likely to commit more crimes?

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 13/09/2025 14:28

Locutus2000 · 13/09/2025 13:35

'Free Speech' - but only for those you agree with.

Let the gaslighting commence.

Those people were not fired for not liking or agreeing with Charlie Kirk and what he believed in.

They were fired for gloating about it online, including some who wanted to compile a list of those they regarded as right wing to kill next.

Agreed - this site becomes more of a parody of itself by the day

Far right - tommy uniting the kingdom with his hate. Also the anti racism counter protest.

Through religious channels the police have told muslims, people of colour and overt religious attire to stay home!

My husband and son have gone on the anti racism march for the first half. Am brown and wear a scarf so I’m home.

I’m visibly Jewish. Imagine how I must feel every time I walk past a pro Palestine protest. The latest horrific thing I encountered was a group of women hissing as I went past. I was unsure about what it meant so I asked them.. They were unable to talk to me initially because one of them said to the others; don’t talk to a zio-Nazi, she’s a child killer. But I stayed and waited and asked again. They continued with their hissing until a passerby (also Jewish though not as visibly) took me away and explained that it was meant to be the sound of the gas chambers.
So I understand how you must feel and I’m genuinely sorry and appalled that you feel threatened by this march. That’s wrong and upsetting on so many levels. I also hope that you can see that other protests make other people feel threatened. And that any kind of intimidation, racism or hate has no place on our streets, no matter what principles you stand for. The only way to preserve humanity and values is to listen and accept other views, and embrace differences with understanding and peaceful discourse. Again, I’m so sorry that you feel this way.

Mini2025 · 13/09/2025 14:30

I don’t think MN has any idea how much fury exists in the uk right now.

The anger is being channeled on this march rightly or wrongly.

incidentally I don’t agree with thousands of economic undocumented migrants arriving per year.

it costs the tax payer £4b a year.

im happy with legal immigration but I don’t want undocumented people here.

Starmer has completely misunderstood the fury of many Britons. Look at Reform.

It may not be a popular opinion on MN but it’s how many in the country feel.

Wait until you find out about the Barbary slave trade and what these north African slavers did to millions of European and Irish slaves (to name a few)....

Not to mention the activities of Ghengis Khan

Except the British Empire has been over for quite some time so it may be relevant to YOU as a person (sort of) but it’s not relevant to the issue of immigration into the U.K. now, is it. Or should the U.K. shoulder guilt and burden as reparations from the BE? How long for? To whom?

It is and it always has been. There are plenty of people who don’t discriminate between legal and illegal immigrants; they just want immigrants out. I’ve been asked my entire life, “…but where are you from originally”, because even though I was born here, I’ve always been viewed as an immigrant and throughout my life, an ardent desire for me to go back to where I came from (and they don’t mean London) has been expressed to me by the likes of people who are marching today. I’m sure there’s no shortage of people who just want Britain to be white.

As for reparations, I never said a thing about them. Like you, I don’t see how it’s workable. “Quite some time”, in this case, isn’t actually very long. My dad’s great grandparents were born as slaves. Guilt serves no useful purpose but the British empire did, to put it mildly, a lot of damage and the consequences are far-reaching and ongoing. You don’t get to brush it aside so easily.

It’s not, it’s about freeing racism

A lot can get lost in 'overall' stats, because crime might be increasing in certain area, but falling in others, and sexual crimes are often unreported.

I don't blame them. Just look at the low rape convictions generally and how badly the Rochdale gang rapes were handled.

I don’t think you have any idea how ridiculous your views are and how very very small the number of people who are interested in this far right politics are. You’ve been conned. the British have always been proud of their education and their systems and their stiff upper lip and how we keep a cool head always. You’ve let us all down with your ridiculous hooking onto USA style right wing Nazi hate speech is free speech philosophy it’s ridiculous.

So Op, you think it's okay that 1000 young men a DAY come into the UK illegally? And we pay to house and feed them in hotels?

REALLY?

Maybe you'd change your opinion, if next week the house next door becomes a HMO? Maybe you'd be pissed off if they are favoured for jobs over your son?

Good on your son, we need everyone to make a stand.

Horrible hateful feelings without looking at the bigger picture …even if your 4 billion figure was correct it’s trivial in terms of government spending. It’s attacking the defenceless instead of those really not contributing

It's safe for you to go on holiday then.

However you are protected from torture as part of your human rights. Are you willing to give that up?

Where have you got the idea from anyone wants their Human Rights eroded?

Don’t fall out with him over it. Not worth ruining your relationship over.

I’d actually express interest in it when he gets back. Find out what he saw and heard, and what he thought of it.

Part of growing up is exploring new ideas, and yes still testing the boundaries within which you grew up - even at 22.

Yes exactly ❤️

Very strong presence of people who profess Christianity, maybe. They aren’t actually being very Christian though. What about this bit of scripture?
“When a stranger sojourns with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong. You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself” Leviticus 19, 33-34
Or if you would prefer New Testament
Matthew 25, 34-40
”Then the king will say to those at his right hand, ‘Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?’ And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.’

How do those church people square these verses with their stance on asylum?
