My son has gone on the march

1000 replies

funkadelic · 13/09/2025 10:59

Hi, have been on here years but only lurk, don’t post. But today is the day.
I am in bits. My 22yr old DS is in London on this march. I am shaking and utterly appalled. We differ on politics massively and have done for some time. I work in education, have travelled and am bit of a lefty hippy but to be honest it’s becoming more about values and morals. He is fully immersed in the manosphere algorithm and I’ve always thought he is exploring himself and things and have chats about why he has the opinions he does and try and understand his point of view. I try not to belittle him but try and get him to critically think about things.
But this I can’t deal with. I am so upset that my son has gone to this, and that it is something that is so far away from me and my values, something that I thought I had instilled in him as well.
I am totally aware that it’s triggered embarrassment but that is my issue and I’m not putting that on him. He is still my son and I love him and his passion and interest in the world, just in something I believe is so wrong and makes me sad.
Please talk some sense into me.

This. There is nuance in this whole discussion. The left made a huge mistake in trying to shut down open discussion on this topic and several others. 'Racists! Transphobes!' And now they're finally seeing - too late - that those tactics only work for so long. Those tactics make otherwise normal, moderate people feel lied to and overlooked and in the end, furious. So they have a chance now to pivot and say 'We got this wrong and we're sorry. We shut down discussion of genuine and legitimate concerns. Tell us what you're afraid of. We will listen to you and we will try to address your concerns with sincerity.'

I really hope they do because if they don't, we're fucked.

Yes, this is absolutely what needs to happen.

It has astounded me that Labour seems to have learned nothing since Gordon Brown’s comment about a woman worried about her son’s job prospects 15 years ago.

Just because you don't like the source doesn't mean it's untrue.

I guess we would be on the different marches

You on the 'unite the kingdom'

Me on the 'march against facism'

Are you smoking crack?
Has Farage/Robinson published a new Mein Kampf? Are we going to see France as Lebensraum? Will the they be setting fire the Reichstag/Parliament?

And did you sleep through the attack on the Capitol on January 6th when supporters of Farage’s chum wouldn’t accept the democratic vote?

Give it time.

There are plenty of ways of being a non-lefty hippy type without going on a march organised by a neo-Nazi.

"march organised by a neo-Nazi."

But that is your opnion- that it is a "march organised by a neo-Nazi." And not everyone agrees with you. That doesnt make them lost or neo-Nazi supporters. Your opinions are not holier than others. Listen to yourself 😂

The Elites are laughing

Laughing while they buy up all the UKs assets and strip it bare and hoard their wealth abroad. Funny how corporate migration is never challenged.

If you're a billionaire who has benefited from trickle up late stage capitalism and you have two political ideologies to choose from, to back with your money, either

Liberal socialist, pay more tax and distribute wealth more equitably

Or

Far right, more big capitalism, more tax breaks

You will put your wealth into supporting Far Right, because it supports the status quo. Whilst the little people are fighting amongst themselves they are easy pickings. They are weak.

The elites are fleeing the UK. The mobile professional classes are leaving too. Our top academics (including multiple Nobel prize winners) have left. Entrepreneurs are leaving.

The past week alone has businesses cancel seen billions of investment in the UK:

  • Merck cancelling a £1bn R&D centre
  • Ineos cancelling all investment in the UK for the foreseeable future (literally billions)
  • Astra Zeneca cancelling a £200m centre in Cambridge.

The labour party have a Marxist communist running out energy policy (we now have energy prices 3 times higher than the USA). They have appointed a Marxist as a junior treasury minister.

I think your tax the rich policies are just driving the country into the ground. We are all poorer because of these anti business, anti investment, anti job policies.

StandFirm · 13/09/2025 14:00

If you think a march organised by shady as fuck Tommy Robinson/Yaxley-Lennon is merely about 'freedom of expression', you are nowhere near 'the centre'.
Let's call a spade a spade here.
If my DS attended the march, as a mother, I would think I need to have a few serious talks about history, political philosophy and basic civic education. It's not about shaming, it's about doing my job as a mum. OP is right to ask herself how she tackles this!

I know very little about him. Indeed I had no idea he was involved.

This march is huge, WAY bigger than any one person. I suspect those not in the habit of protesting are doing so on principle and heart feeling, not as blind followers of one man.

And please don't tell me what I am and am not. There's a great deal of irony to be found in the tone of your reply.

A local company is organising travel to this. Selling it as a nice day out on their public pages but posting it as the Tommy Robinson event on their closed group. If it's so great why are they being shifty about it? Even though I despise TR and everything he stands for I do accept the right to hold protests as part of a democratic society. However much people waffle on about being silenced etc taking people to a legal event is allowed so why not just advertise it? They know it's not a good look to a lot of people don't they? We are a very diverse area and I feel desperately sorry for anyone who innocently booked this thinking they're off to see the capital with their kids and ends up feeling or even actually being unsafe.

They're selling it as a day trip to London then dropping people off to take part in the march? Can you post the link? Sorry if you've already posted it, I've not read the full thread.

Hang and flog who?

Other religions, homosexuals, unmarried parents, for example. Basically, anyone who doesn’t conform to their “Christian” (not) ideals. But I suspect you may know that.

Lalgarh · 13/09/2025 14:15

To give him some credit, Farage has distanced himself from Waxy Lemon, which is why Elon Musk has publicly started grooming that Rupert Lowe gobshite who said he'd have him in Reform/ UKIP. But he's media friendly enough to have got this as front page news throughout the summer.

I would not want any of my DC in central London today due to the risk of these marches becoming violent. To want to protect your DC is a pretty normal maternal feeling.

How old are your dc, are they young adults?

Plus if you read the op it is very much about political divergence and being upset about that, not safety.

Whenever anyone calls in to Any Answers, for example, and begins with “I’m a Christian, but” it’s a pretty good indication that they are about to express the most extreme, hateful views.

That's an inaccurate, unproven, generalisation.

cardibach · 13/09/2025 14:19

apricotcobbler · 13/09/2025 13:40

Not when it undercuts wages for British Nationals.

For far too long, it has been claimed that migration has economically benefitted the United Kingdom.
The government’s own immigration White Paper from May 2025 admitted this was false, detailing stagnating GDP growth (just 3.4% since 2019, compared to the US’ 12% in the same period); immigration from low-skilled workers “distorting the labour market”, and displacing workers in six out of 10 key industries.

It only undercuts wages if employers exploit immigrant workers.

kalevalaa · 13/09/2025 14:20

Wilfulignoranceabounds · 13/09/2025 13:57

Given the history of the British empire, it’s a bit rich for British people to harp on about immigrants foisting their culture on the host country. At least they’re not coming over here, putting you in shackles, separating you from all you know..shipping you to the back of beyond… branding you with hot irons, breeding you like cattle, raping you at will and torturing you just for kicks.

Wait until you find out about the Barbary slave trade and what these north African slavers did to millions of European and Irish slaves (to name a few)....

HereAreYourOptions · 13/09/2025 14:20

Oioisavaloy27 · 13/09/2025 13:58

What like they did Brexit? Please tell me how anyone benefitted from Nigel Farrages deals? He even fucked up the return agreement which makes it harder to send immigrants back, meanwhile higher food costs, higher bills the list goes on......

Did you actually read all of my post?

So your example relates to a different country where someone attempted to assassinate Trump before the election and someone just shot a right wing political activist? It seems to me that the left wing in the US is very dangerous? No?

Whats your point again?

That country is not the UK so I dont see the link, but a really interesting example you have chosen

cardibach · 13/09/2025 14:22

EasternStandard · 13/09/2025 13:45

You’re making a good point

Well, not really.
If someone came on a boat in that situation they would actually be illegal I migrants, they couldn’t claim asylum and couldn’t become a citizen.

BurntBroccoli · 13/09/2025 14:22

Goldenbear · 13/09/2025 13:47

You talk about the economy what the hell are these controversial, intimidating protests doing for the tourism? What are they doing for 'Investor confidence'- politically unstable countries are not ones to invest in!

Exactly.
This is going on in York at the moment which is extremely popular for international tourists and students. These flaggers have been removing world flags that have been put up near the campus and installing even more of their own.

My son has gone on the march

What do you actually think the march is about?
It was organised by SLY and has Steve Bannon and Katie Hopkins speaking. That tells you all you need to know about the kind of March it is.
if people don’t know that then they haven’t bothered to do much research into what they are actually marching for.

Thank you. I really try to be. He’s not completely lost, he thinks the whole Andre Tate thing is crap, and has seen the light about Trump thankfully 😅 but he’s totally caught up with this with some mates. He’s got some fab traits, loyal hardworking and sensible at times! He wants a family and is kind and really sensitive, he’s just so muddled about this whole thing. His best mate growing up was a Muslim boy who’s Dad was an immigrant! I just can’t get him to see it. He’s totally on the ‘protecting women and girls’ crap and I’ve tried, showed him actual statistics etc of violence against girls but he’s just not seeing it, or maybe it’s because it’s me. He will be super upset deep down that I am so upset but I think it will come out as anger towards me.
I can blame so much on the pre frontal cortex rewiring but I just can’t with this!!

Thank you. I really try to be. He’s not completely lost, he thinks the whole Andre Tate thing is crap, and has seen the light about Trump thankfully

that‘s great. So don’t alienate him or damage your relationship by reacting instinctively.

try to keep the lines of communication open, ask critical questions and trust that he will find his way in the world. That’s really all you can do at this point, tbh…
