My son has gone on the march

funkadelic · 13/09/2025 10:59

Hi, have been on here years but only lurk, don’t post. But today is the day.
I am in bits. My 22yr old DS is in London on this march. I am shaking and utterly appalled. We differ on politics massively and have done for some time. I work in education, have travelled and am bit of a lefty hippy but to be honest it’s becoming more about values and morals. He is fully immersed in the manosphere algorithm and I’ve always thought he is exploring himself and things and have chats about why he has the opinions he does and try and understand his point of view. I try not to belittle him but try and get him to critically think about things.
But this I can’t deal with. I am so upset that my son has gone to this, and that it is something that is so far away from me and my values, something that I thought I had instilled in him as well.
I am totally aware that it’s triggered embarrassment but that is my issue and I’m not putting that on him. He is still my son and I love him and his passion and interest in the world, just in something I believe is so wrong and makes me sad.
Please talk some sense into me.

I don't consider myself left OR right, like (I imagine) most I have views that would be considered left of centre and views that would be considered right of centre. Both.

Your son has made a choice to voice his concern around freedom of expression. Illegal migration (ie illegal routes) is another concern that is clearly growing amongst moderate people.

Why are you trying to shame him? Isn't shaming people the antithesis of liberal? It certainly used to be!

You have no idea how ridiculous you sound. You are clearly incapable of objective thought.

Ridiculous how? That is what happened and some political commentators/historians far more knowledgeable than you or I have been observing echoes of early 30s Germany for quite some time. Many immigrants - and brown skinned British born people - are living with increased levels of racial abuse and fear.

Cinaferna · 13/09/2025 13:55

Owl718 · 13/09/2025 11:19

You say you aim to be open minded and provide a balanced view to your DS but then have an issue if he doesn’t agree with you.

The fact that you think your views are right and his are wrong shows you are incredibly blinkered.

You are not acting in the way you claim you are. You are trying to indoctrinate him.

Closed minds such as yours are unhealthy. I’m afraid you are a poor role model for your DS.

God help us if it is 'closed-minded' to not believe all immigrants are wicked rapists and deserve to be sent back to their war torn homeless states.

There is a difference between having alternative political viewpoints from your adult children and condoning racial hatred and incitement to violence.

Gladysknightjustwalkinmyshoes · 13/09/2025 13:55

This thread alone shows the division this march has created. Its very depressing to see the UK population being pitted against eachother.

We are told by this government that "people have the right to peaceful protest" even when the pro-Palestinian lobby are shouting for jihad on the streets, terrorising Jewish people and smashing up their businesses.🙄

Nobody is arguing that this correct though so that isn't an answer.

Only on mumsnet will people respond to “my 16 year old daughter wants sleepovers with her bf” with she’s an adult and can do what she likes, but are more outraged for a 22 year old man to have a different political opinion than his mum.

People are very entrenched. They want their vote and their dc not to think differently enough to have their own.

apricotcobbler · 13/09/2025 13:56

DuncinToffee · 13/09/2025 13:48

It's safe for you to go on holiday then.

However you are protected from torture as part of your human rights. Are you willing to give that up?

It didn't work for the Rape Gang victims did it, when the establishment "turned a blind eye" for the sake of "community cohesion".

Migration isn’t a new thing, so give your little brain a rest and stop wondering.

Mass immigration is. Before 1997 migration was relatively low, in the tens of thousands and before the 1950s almost negligible, the UK was almost 100% ethnically and culturally homogenous (from Anglo Saxon and Celtic peoples). After Blair it was in the hundreds of thousands and recently in the millions.

And before the second world war, most immigration was from culturally similar places, including Ireland and Europe.

apricotcobbler · 13/09/2025 13:17

Immigrants who integrated and didn't foist their culture on the host country.

Given the history of the British empire, it’s a bit rich for British people to harp on about immigrants foisting their culture on the host country. At least they’re not coming over here, putting you in shackles, separating you from all you know..shipping you to the back of beyond… branding you with hot irons, breeding you like cattle, raping you at will and torturing you just for kicks.

You have your political opinions and he has his. I hope sincerely the march today is peaceful.

There are reports estimating that a million people could turn up today (no idea if this will be the case) in London. If this is somewhat true I cannot believe they are all Far Right nazis.

We must stop labelling all people who have concerns about immigration as Far Right - particularly after events in the USA this week.

Who is it organised by?

Oioisavaloy27 · 13/09/2025 13:58

HereAreYourOptions · 13/09/2025 13:46

Maybe he just sees things getting worse and no-one on the left actually doing anything about it, other than uselessly tinkering around the edges whilst many of them tell themselves what fantastically moral and virtuous people they are and how anyone disagreeing with them is basically Hitler.

At least the right are offering change. It will make things worse of course, but until there is actually an attractive counter offer, that's where people will go.

What like they did Brexit? Please tell me how anyone benefitted from Nigel Farrages deals? He even fucked up the return agreement which makes it harder to send immigrants back, meanwhile higher food costs, higher bills the list goes on......

You are really reaching now.

So please explain, what is this march about?

Yes, not wanting to live in a political turmoil needs to be seen as the norm again.

There's a far right march in London today

And a counter march so…..

LayerCakeOfStrangers · 13/09/2025 13:59

I think it serves us well to remind ourselves that if we raise children to be carbon copy mini-me’s, we’ve failed them, as we have failed to give them their own identity and agency.

I don’t my want or expect my children’s views to align exactly with mine. I had them knowing it could go either way. Even if it’s something I don’t agree with, what I WOULD like them to do is have passion, and feeling and care about things bigger than them. Reframe it OP that he cares. And that he’s young and his politics will ping pong all over the place.

I do hope he’s safe though. Those marches can get very chaotic and violent I hope he lands home safe

If you think a march organised by shady as fuck Tommy Robinson/Yaxley-Lennon is merely about 'freedom of expression', you are nowhere near 'the centre'.
Let's call a spade a spade here.
If my DS attended the march, as a mother, I would think I need to have a few serious talks about history, political philosophy and basic civic education. It's not about shaming, it's about doing my job as a mum. OP is right to ask herself how she tackles this!

I see you are also closed minded and therefore a risk to all.

Oh dear, you might want to do some fact checking

Have you seen the hotel protests? Who were the ones being vocal?

At the protests I have seen outside hotels it's Antifa that makes all the noise.

You are massively overreacting!

GentleSheep · 13/09/2025 14:01

Have been watching the march being streamed on various YT channels. Looks great! Can't wait to hear Bishop Cai Dewar and other speakers. Very strong Christian presence.

God British guilt is sooooo boring, especially when it relates to events that aren’t even in living memory.

unless you did these crimes, or anyone you know, it’s not really relevant about discussion on what happens today

People are very entrenched. They want their vote and their dc not to think differently enough to have their own.

I would not want any of my DC in central London today due to the risk of these marches becoming violent. To want to protect your DC is a pretty normal maternal feeling.

Are you smoking crack?

Has Farage/Robinson published a new Mein Kampf? Are we going to see France as Lebensraum? Will the they be setting fire the Reichstag/Parliament?
