I'm sure we would all love to have big utility rooms or laundry rooms in outbuildings, however space is at an absolute premium in many UK homes and there is no choice other than to put the washing machine in the kitchen.

Exactly!

@Pigtailsandall I don’t have cat food and don’t eat fish.

And if people don't want ‘a pile of dirty undies waiting to go in next to where I'm prepping food’ you could always not prep food do it at another time? Or simply take the laundry basket from the bathroom or bedroom or wherever you keep it, take it to the kitchen, load it into the machine, switch it on like a normal person and hey presto, it’s not ‘dirty undies’ any more.

It's just not where it's meant to be.

In the UK it is how the vast majority of people do things and a machine in the kitchen is expected. It is not ‘urgh’.

@Pigtailsandall in most of Europe

Well that’s nice but a lot of us don’t have room.

Variety is the spice of life, eh?

Lol, I'm not sure why people get so defensive about it? If you'd quote the WHOLE post, literally just said "even in tiny one-bed flats". My friend's small 1-bed flat in Copenhagen has a washing machine in the bathroom. I know mumsnet is UK centric but that doesn't mean that the way things are done here is automatically the best. I don't think the laundry and cooking combine nicely and I find it a bit ugh.

Oh, not sure the photos uploaded. Apologies if we end up with multiples.

What a beautiful kitchen. What about a soft dove grey or duck egg?

Recently had mine done in pale yellow and green

So this is totally not my style but I unexpectedly love it. I wouldn't have thought green and yellow work together but it's really pretty and cosy.

In the UK, unless fully wired in, we can't really have washing machines in the bathroom though. I get why they make sense in there but our electricity supply means it's not safe to have them. I did actually view a one bedroom flat recently that did have a top loader in the bathroom. I didn't dare look at how it was connected to the mains ⚡

Think for me it's just the idea of pulling out fresh clean bedding from a machine next to the cat food bowl, or having the smell of cooking salmon linger by my fresh towels.

What's going to happen to bedding near a cat bowl? Why would you have fresh towels hanging around the kitchen?
I know a bathroom location is normal in other countries but piss & shit happens in bathrooms which is arguably worse than salmon & cat foot 🤷🏻‍♀️

I said I find it unpleasant, having food smells linger with fresh laundry. Plus lots of kitchen/diner/living rooms are open plan now, mine included, and I don't want the washing machine noise when I"m reading or having a family dinner etc. I also appreciate having a huge space-save in the kitchen by using the cupboard for the machine instead.

But yeah, I find it a bit ugh. It's traditional in the UK so I don't expect Brits to find it as odd as foreigners, clearly

Anyhoo, ppl are super-miffed about this comment for some reason so I'm moving on to admire some nice kitchens now.

Edited typos

bapples1 · 15/09/2025 21:39

And aim just saying bathroom smells can be unpleasant too...

Do people really put piles of ‘dirty undies’ on their kitchen surfaces? I put any loads of washing waiting to go in on the floor by the machine.

Pretty much this.

When I need to do a wash, I take the appropriate items from the laundry bin and put them in the washing basket. Carry it downstairs (not a difficult task!). Put said items in the machine, close the door and start the cycle.

At the end, I remove said items from machine and hang outside on a good day or on an airier upstairs on a shit day. At no time ever have they been hanging around cat bowls, salmon, curry or anything else!

Oh well, each to their own.

bedsaidted · 16/09/2025 09:12

oh my god!! Thank you so much everyone, I was unwell for a few days so I wasn't online but now that im feeling better I can have a good look at all of these kitchens for ideas! Wow!!

I'm having my bathroom done and have a decent sized cupboard in there, I'm putting my washing machine and dryer in there, I'm ridiculously excited! Makes sense as most of the washing comes from upstairs and belongs back upstairs (no room for a utility)

I keep mine in a cupboard in the ensuite shower room that we had installed in the spare rooom. It isn't that I'm that bothered by having them in the kitchen, but in our case the kitchen is open plan to the living room and I don't want to hear the noise or smell the detergent. Also we have a relatively small kitchen and they take up so much room. It makes sense to have them stacked too, half the space.

We have 4 and hes the only one who gets up there!

The light is Dunelm 🙂

Ah amazing thank you. I saw one elsewhere but it was quite expensive so will have a look at Dunelm.

Cats are such strange creatures, he looks like he's surveying his kingdom😆.

Our washing machine isn’t in our kitchen, but I don’t understand why people are so “ugh” at the thought of it in the kitchen. 🤔

Yes, it’s not very different to having a dishwasher in the kitchen really. I think it was mainly due to houses being smaller (and older) than in the US or Australia. Laundry rooms are much more common now. I have one, it’s very basic and small but it’s better than nothing I guess. I could easily live with one in the kitchen though if I have to (will be downsizing in the future so quite likely).

Very interested in what product you used to paint your units @PocketSand. it’s a beautiful kitchen.

PocketSand · 16/09/2025 18:49

It’s Farrow and Ball Parma Grey. Modern eggshell with a Matt varnish.

Halsall · 17/09/2025 08:23

Thanks @PocketSand. I wondered whether it was some kind of chalk paint, so interesting that it’s normal F & B.

This is mine. It was all orangey wood before. I I just got new worktops and painted the cupboards, and put some shelves up. It’s more blue than it looks. I still need a new floor but it’s not level, so I’m still pondering it a year later (can’t afford to have it screeded).

LibertyLily · 17/09/2025 13:18

Brilliant glow up @JungAtHeart! We did similar when we'd just moved in last year. It's certainly worth it, however temporary, imo.
And today - exactly 12 months on from completion on the cottage purchase - the 40+ year old boiler has finally come out and we're a step closer to getting the new oven into the relocated kitchen!
