I am looking to redecorate, my kitchen is very tired. I want something neutral enough or possibly light green. Anyone want to show me their kitchens for ideas? im really bad at this and find googling images just gives me perfect instagram kitchens. Thank you

This is mine from the estate agents photos before we moved in, couldn't post one of what it looks like right now as dishes are piled up in the counter waiting for the dishwasher to finish so I can empty and reload

Can I see your kitchen?

Thanks everyone! It makes me feel warm, I love my home 🥰

Silly question but in Australia I've never seen a washing machine in a kitchen before - is that normal? I'd say here we nearly all have laundry rooms for that. Loving all your beautiful pictures though and I dream daily of having an Aga but they close so much here!

Only in the UK! I'm not British and it baffled me when I moved here. The first thing that I did when I designed my own kitchen was to get rid of it, ugh.

Our washing machine isn’t in our kitchen, but I don’t understand why people are so “ugh” at the thought of it in the kitchen. 🤔

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 14/09/2025 07:32

@ErinBell01under the sink is a water boiler for the boiling water tap plus a few cleaning bits/tea and hand towel, the 2 tall very end ones are pantry cupboards with cereal/rice/pasta/tins etc, next to each oven are built in fridge/freezers, the rest are more food bits/toaster/slow cooker/pans etc.
The drawers have baking trays/more cleaning bits/towels/cling fils etc.
I try to have as little as possible out on the sides.

Thanks!

I have mine in my kitchen, to me it makes sense as it’s a ‘busy’ room where stuff happens. I don’t have room anywhere else for it, and no one puts them in their bathroom here as our electricity is (technical word incoming) ‘more’. Or something like that. There are no electrical things in any bathroom here, light switches are pulling on a string, fans are automatic or pulling on a string, and shavers have a lower energy/electric whatnot.

We've consciously avoided having the washing machine in the kitchen in our last few houses (five, iirc) and although our current cottage is a lot smaller than those, we're again putting it elsewhere, as I just don't like them in the kitchen. Not because it's 'ugh', but due more to the noise, I think...I like a peaceful, welcoming kitchen that's more like any other living space, rather than a 'clinical' room with lots of machinery. I'd have the dishwasher elsewhere too, ideally - as we did when we had larger utility rooms.

In our current home we're reconfiguring what was a small kitchen, large utility and lobby - from the days when you had to have a lobby between kitchen and cloakroom - into a snug and a lootility with loo, basin, boiler and washing machine. The kitchen is now in the old living room where we'd have struggled to fit a washing machine in, thankfully!

When we lived in Wales we did have friends (originally from London) who had their washing machine put in a cupboard in their tiny cottage first floor bathroom when the place was renovated. I don't know anyone else in the UK who has their washing machine upstairs.

We had a laundry room on the first floor in a previous home we lived in. Definitely not something I would choose again.

Our ceilings are 12 foot high so even with extra tall cupboards they don’t go up to the ceiling!

Yes, not everyone's choice I appreciate but even with extra ceiling height, we've always designed up to that.

It probably only works if you use a tumble dryer mainly, I wouldn't want to be using one upstairs as I hang my washing out a lot.

And if you never venture outdoors - we're a very muddy family so it made no sense to trail everything up through the house all the time.

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 15/09/2025 08:43

I wouldn't want a washing machine upstairs in case of leaks.
Already have the bath/shower to contend with.
If it leaks downstairs, it's more contained and would cause less damage.

Our washing machine isn’t in our kitchen, but I don’t understand why people are so “ugh” at the thought of it in the kitchen. 🤔

Think for me it's just the idea of pulling out fresh clean bedding from a machine next to the cat food bowl, or having the smell of cooking salmon linger by my fresh towels. Or vice versa having a pile of dirty undies waiting to go in next to where I'm prepping food. I think it's the ugh factor for me.

I also just feel like it gives the house an upside down feeling of things being in the wrong place. Like getting up in the morning and going to your dresser in the living room next to your bookcase to get socks from. It's just not where it's meant to be.

Agree with this ^
We've never had a tumble dryer (although did once inherit a washer dryer - left behind by house vendor - which was crap) despite previously having plenty of space for one. I just prefer to hang my washing outside.

Even during six years in 'wet Wales' we didn't succumb to a dryer 😆 So, to me, having the washing machine upstairs makes no sense.

Mine is green and simple, we have limited space but also a baby so added a table in the middle of the room, so we can all eat together. The bannister/posts are now also sage green but haven't got a photo of this.

Not sure what went on it quoted the wrong post!

My kitchen is very plain but easy to keep tidy ish

I love this, is the worktop stain resistant? Our kitchen was in when we bought the house and the worktop isn’t what I’d choose so want to replace at some point.
I prefer your cabinet colour too but changing ours will be a big job!

I love the cat sat on top of the cupboard, mine eyes it up but hasn't quite worked out how to get up there.

Also love you light, I want one like that.

blondiepigtails · 15/09/2025 15:19

My kitchen is all cream and brown with a terracotta floor so not what you are looking for!
My best advice is have a set of big drawers next to your dishwasher so that you can unload your crockery straight into the drawers. Discovered this in a holiday cottage last year. Game changer. Plates & bowls into the bottom drawer. Mugs etc into the top drawer which also has a hidden mini drawer for all your cutlery. Absolutely no time wasted traipsing round the kitchen.

It isn’t stain resistant but all stains remove with barkeepers friend cream

I'm sure we would all love to have big utility rooms or laundry rooms in outbuildings, however space is at an absolute premium in many UK homes and there is no choice other than to put the washing machine in the kitchen.

Don't I know, I live in a small two up, two down terrace in inner London (I can'teven get a good pic of my kitchen!). I put mine under the stairs (and also gave my tiny kitchen much needed cupboard space). Washing machines in bathroom/bathroom alcoves are the norm in most of Europe even in tiny one-bed flats
