Here's mine - needs updating...

Oh goodness, your kitchen is badly needing updated..are you not ashamed to show us it? 🤣🤣🤣. Wish it was my kitchen.

SeagullSam2027 · 14/09/2025 13:49

I grew up in a different country where cupboards were always taken up to the ceiling - I couldn’t understand why everyone seemed to have these dust collection spots in their kitchen when I first lived here!

I've never had gaps above my kitchen cupboards. They look very odd to me and I grew up in the UK!

Here's mine. A bit untidy after last night's party.

😀😀

If that needs updating then mine needs to go in a skip !!

Where is everyone's belongings?! All the kitchens are empty!! They looks amazing though :)

My photos are taken not long after it was installed around 2/3 years ago (you can see I still don’t have a handle on one of my drawers!). No way am I taking photos now 😆

Spanador · 13/09/2025 19:01

Quite a few of them come up on reverse image search as they’ve been taken from elsewhere on the internet. Take everything with a pinch of salt Smile

My photos were taken just after installation - i assume many others have done the same thing. It seems odd to post photos, on a strangers forum, of a kitchen that isn’t yours?!

ZippyDeer · 14/09/2025 15:44

The Kitchen I posted was when it had just been finished two years ago. We had to have major work with two ceilings taken down and some dampness dealt with. You can see how it was in progress, a bit of a nightmare. It now looks homely with our bits and pieces in it. The other photo is the one we had for 42 years. 😏

Hi - we have a 1930s house. Was covered in carpet and laminate flooring - gradually taken everything up, and luckily we had the original floors. Hired a floor sander - and sanded the entire downstairs. In my head - it was going to take a day .... 4 days of hard work. Which is my excuse for forgetting to account for the dresser - too tired!

I have made many mistakes when finishing floors - and always ended up orange. This time I did my research and found Finney's - finneyswoodfinishes.co.uk. I emailed - and Mark Finney sent me back a lovely email with loads of advice. Suggested the Trade Acrylic Varnish - and it was perfect. Kept the colour of the wood and only slight sheen. It's much cheaper than B&Q etc too - I did the whole of the downstairs and so easy to use. It has been 2 years - and the floors are still perfect.

Wow, this is absolutely amazing advice! Thank you so much for sharing that information!!🙏
We have horrible cheap laminate downstairs (came with the house) and I lifted a couple up and I can see we have excellent condition pine boards underneath. I'm dying to get them sanded and treated but don't feel brave enough to do it myself....so I got quotes to get it done professionally and theyve come in at £2,000, which we cannot afford to do.
So now I feel inspired by you to maybe pluck up the courage to do it myself!
4 days of sanding though.....😮

I think the challenge you will have with wooden steps is they tend to be bulkier and heavier for the same number of steps. Tubular steel can be cut thinner, lighter and still take the weight. My late MiL used to have a quaint little wooden milking stool which she used as a step but obviously no handrail.

One of my CF DC bought me a plain black slimline set after watching me balance on a box in one of the sheds and told me I was too old to be balancing on boxes. I retorted appropriately but it probably was a good idea - I do have osteoarthritis which can affect my ability to adjust quickly and balance.
If/when I feel the need for them in the kitchen I’ll just hide them under the stairs and pretend I’m not getting older 😁

Haha, very cheeky!

Thanks, a chair has worked well all these years also long for antique wooden steps.

Makes sense as should be thinking more practically not about aesthetics.

@MetricMs , thank you for the splashback link, will have a look.

Some would come up on whoever sold or fitted the kitchen if they use the photos on their online brochures.

Who has time to reverse search a stranger's kitchen anyway 😅.

Rightmove is useful for this.

Excellent idea - I have a long narrow galley kitchen and looking on Rightmove at similar properties convinced me to leave it along and saved me a fortune.

Our took longer as we had 'Orange Varnish' from previous mistakes that took some shifting! If yours haven't been treated - it shouldn't take too long. We did the whole of downstairs - 2 living rooms, kitchen diner, hallway and utility room. The Finneys finish is touch dry in about 30mins - so you can get 3 coats on v quickly. I love our floors - they make such a difference to the house, it was well worth the pain. Goodluck xx

I’m going to be brave in the face of all these magazine worthy kitchens and post mine! It’s a 300 year old small rented cottage on a country estate. I absolutely adore my house, but it’s definitely different to all of these! Please excuse any mess.

There's no mess at all - it's very neat and tidy. I love the semi-circular storage nook above the door! 😍

OrlandointheWilderness · 14/09/2025 19:04

Thank you guys! I adore it. The house is full of nooks and cranny’s. The door underneath the hound picture is a cavernous understairs cupboard with a full size drinks fridge, tumble dryer, air fryer, microwave and endless storage for hoover/ironing board etc!

This is one of my favourites! I adore the little nook above the door. It’s beautiful.

@Algoquick love the colour of your kitchen! This is the layout that we are trying to achieve but currently have a wall separating the space and struggling to visualise it and whether a small island would fit. Do you know the measurements of your room?

I’ll measure it and let you know.

You see I love this so, so much more than the huge shiny brand new kitchens that look like show houses. This is by far more appealing to me! It's full of character and it looks homely and comforting. I love it.

"Understairs cupboard" AKA a Utility Room! 😂

Our ceilings are 12 foot high so even with extra tall cupboards they don’t go up to the ceiling!
