Had you heard of Charlie Kirk before yesterday?

Just that really? I hadn’t and wondering if I’m the only one. And why is it such a big story? I guess the association with trump. What would be the equivalent level of fame over here?

The point is that the vast majority of what Charlie Kirk engaged in was not debate. It was highly manipulative, curation of short form narrative designed to provoke, humiliate, demonise, and evade interrogation .

I'd never heard of CK until he was murdered but the clips I've seen all appear to be Q and A debate type scenarios where people challenge him on his (often unpleasant imo) beliefs. Also he was invited to speak at the Oxford debating society (I think).
Both those instances certainly look debatey to me ie people discussing often opposing views.

I disagree with most of what CK said but I think criticising his debating style as not proper enough, sounds quite alot like the usual leftwing purity spiral getting into gear.

Yeah I see nothing wrong with this.

(I went to college to study and was pretty serious and did actually make fun of girls just there for the social life, but he’s just reassuring them it’s ok? In fact it’s not a bad idea for them? Where else are you going to find decent, intelligent men?)

I didn’t marry my college boyfriend but he’s a nice guy and it wouldn’t have been a bad idea. I just wasn’t ready but others definitely are and it’s totally healthy and normal.

The context I gave showed that a girl who wanted to be a political journalist was asking him for career advice

and he just ignored that request to say they should focus on marriage, be 'clear that's the reason you're going'. Don't you find that disrespectful & patronising?

Not to mention saying 'actually the reason' women worked was to get husbands. As if no one wanted to get independence or mental stimulation etc, as if feminist campaigns to open the workforce to women were just about husband-hunting.

Butchyrestingface · 12/09/2025 07:01

RingoJuice · 12/09/2025 06:58

Sure sure, that’s why he married a woman who was like, five years older than him. Who holds a college degree and (I think) runs sort of Christian themed business

Are you denying that he said these things?

He’s hardly the first person to preach one thing to the proles, but follow a different course in his own life.

maddening · 12/09/2025 06:54

Authoritarian! People can have different perspectives and ypu don't get to tell them who to mourn!

I didn't agree with everything he said but found the debates interesting- we should be able to debate without being shot .

We should be able to debate without falling back on misogynistic and white supremacist tropes. Perhaps he should have debated without spreading hate?
If he really wanted to debate without the risk of getting shot may e he could have advocated for gun control in the US.

I dont share Kirk's politics. But many of your examples, and many of the negative things attributed to him in this thread are taken out of context.

The ten year old thing is a quite cruel example. He is known to be against abortion, so someone put to him the hypothetical situation that his own young daughter were raped and pregnant, which is a fairly low rhetorical trick in my view. CK is a Christian who believes abortion murder, most of us in the UK do not. His answer that he wouldn't seek an abortion in those circumstances now gets endlessly repeated as if he offered up the example of his own daughter being raped. He has had guests at his rallies who have spoken up about either having given birth after rape or themselves being the product or rape, and being grateful that they ir their child weren't aborted. They are not views I share, but I think to use them as part of the case that he is some kind of monster is wrong.

Edited

I don’t think that’s a low rhetorical device. If you advocate something for others you have to say you’d want the same for your loved ones. It’s a useful way to think about things before spouting a view.

You had to go steal a white person’s slot to go be taken somewhat seriously.

@KhakiTiger I don’t think this makes any of it ok at all. I find that a very very low bar tbh!!

So you're now saying you don't think he was speaking sincerely?

His wife hasn't become a lawyer (she took a law degree) so she's following the recommended pattern of taking a degree but then focusing on marriage and kids, with maybe something on the side.

To quote Seinfeld, 'not that there's anything wrong with that.' Being a SAHM is great. The point is that she's not pursued a law career so the college degree is fine w Kirk.

It seems to be a mix of that’s obviously not what he meant because look at his wife, and oh what’s wrong with saying that- he’s just being really nice and kind to those silly girls!

Oppositeofexpectations · 12/09/2025 07:08

I didn’t know his name or anything about him but I’d seen videos of him debating with people on various topics. I didn’t agree with the majority of what he said or stood for but there was clearly a place for open questioning and debate.

Aside from the obvious that nobody deserves what happened to him I do wish he had survived firstly on a human level and secondly as it may have changed his mind on guns. I read this morning how Utah want to secure the death penalty for his killer when they find him which just made my heart sink as they will never get the irony it seems. If killing is wrong then it’s wrong on all levels but they can’t seem to break that chain of thought that it’s ok sometimes, when it suits them and other times it’s the worst crime possible.

Hameth · 12/09/2025 07:09

He was white replacement theory, anti gay, trad wife role and anti feminist and said a few deaths were a price worth paying for access to guns. He also didn't "debate", he asserted and bullied.

This assassination is a terrible terrible thing but im disappointed by the pro-Kirk approval here. Its like finding Andrew Tate fans on the forum.

Exactly. Reminds me of Signora Meloni of Italy, who preaches marriage (rightly) but had a baby with her boyfriend, (who she now raises as a single parent after the boyfriend cheated ☹️)

Or Alice Weidel of the AFD, who opposes gay marriage and immigrant while married to an immigrant woman.

Yes, it's being dressed up as debate. He was a hate preacher.

The context is he was speaking to girls who raised their hands when he asked if marriage was a top priority. Some did (some I assume, did not).

If marriage is your top priority, going to a place with plenty of single, relatively intelligent and driven young men is not a bad idea at all!

It’s the best place to find them, you won’t find such a pool of eligible young men anywhere else. And it’s fine to say that a lot of young men and women go to college less for academics and more for their social life.

Bryonyberries · 12/09/2025 07:13

No, but again my teens and 20’s had. I don’t have instagram though where a lot of them had seen his content.

Exactly🤣 Personally I'd like to be treated w respect, not just patronising, pat-the-dollybird-on-the-head 'kindness'.

He still didn't deserve to be murdered for his beliefs. No one does no matter how awful you think they are.

So you're saying he DIDN'T ignore the girl who asked for political journalism advice & just pivot to marriage?

Have you seen a fuller version of this article, then?

I'm wiling to believe it could have been selectively quoted, but I'd like to see evidence...

anyolddinosaur · 12/09/2025 07:17

No, hadnt heard of Darren Grimes either.

I've gathered that he supported the American belief in carrying arms and therefore some people have been almost gloating over his death.. They are sick. I think Americans are wrong to allow guns in the way they do but his views on that - or anything else - dont justfy shooting him.

He doesn't and I didn't say he did but it's a major risk of stirring the hate pot. Especially in a country with open gun laws.
He lived his values you could say!

speakout · 12/09/2025 07:17

Yes, I knew of him well- due to his trad views, christian values, misogyny, anti gay stance.
I didn't agree with most of his views, but no -one deserves what happened. He has two young children who have lost a father.
