To think ‘most people’ don’t get their windows cleaned this often?

Disagreement in our house today. Do ‘most people’ (which after some discussion was pinned down to people in 30s/40s in eg 3 bed semi with a kid or two 😅) have their windows cleaned every 6-8 weeks?

YABU - of course they do
YANBU - definitely not ‘most’

We wait until we start noticing how bad they are and then get them done. Probably 3 times a year.

Allseeingallknowing · 08/09/2025 21:50

Twice a year

Is this a UK thing? I’ve been in my house 10 yrs and they were done once when the house was pressure cleaned (Canada)

Mine would get noticeably mucky if they were't cleaned regularly. I'm not in a coastal area, but pigeons and seagulls seem to love aiming for my front window.

I can reach up so high by myself, but even with an extension pole I'd have difficulty managing it all. I'm happy to pay someone to do it.

My DH is a window cleaner and our windows never get done 🤣

What's the old saying about the cobbler's children...?

Allseeingallknowing · 08/09/2025 21:55

Often see a man doing upstairs windows with a long handled brush and dirty rag. There’s no way he can get a satisfactory result like that. Must look awful from inside. These days, many windows have a way of extending them out so you can reach to clean them from inside, and clean all the grooves, seals and panes properly.

MummytoBoth · 08/09/2025 21:55

Once a month my window cleaner does ours.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 08/09/2025 21:56

Our window cleaner seems to turn up when he wants. It could be weeks on the trot or months go by and he doesn't show up at all.

He does a good job though when he does them and we have some awkward to reach windows that only he has ever bothered to reach so swings and roundabouts really.

moderate · 08/09/2025 21:57

I clean mine when I notice they're dirty, which is usually in autumn and springtime.

Three of our windows swivel like that, but not the rest. The downstairs windows need someone with a ladder to get the full length.

pjsandplants · 08/09/2025 21:59

We used to get ours done fortnightly at our last house but our current window cleaner comes monthly.

XWKD · 08/09/2025 21:59

Mine are never cleaned.

Sewaccidentprone · 08/09/2025 22:01

Whenever the window cleaner deigns to turn up. Sometimes every 4 weeks, sometimes every 3 mths!

scandinavianyellow · 08/09/2025 22:02

How much are you all paying for this?

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 08/09/2025 22:06

Once a month, front and back for £10. Well worth it.

Ihaveaskedyouthrice · 08/09/2025 22:07

Is this an English thing? I'm in Ireland and I don't think I know anyone who gets their windows cleaned and have no recollection of ever seeing any neighbours getting them done.

TheHateIsNotGood · 08/09/2025 22:09

As cleaning windows is weather contingent then the ideal of once a month just doesn't really happen.

In reality, a trusted and reliable window cleaner turns up as and when, 8-9 times a year out of the possible 12 works well. Although there's always a chance a salty storm or some marauding birds will muck them up within days.

And there's always a possibility that your windows can be easily cleaned by yourself, depending on how level the ground is, how high your windows are and if you've got any ladders and the inclination to get up them with a damp cloth.

I know about these things having been a window cleaner myself in days gone by.

£15, front and back.

WhippetsForever · 08/09/2025 22:11

We never get them done. The insides get done every 6 months, the outside its been 3 years at least since we bothered. They're fine. We're not on a busy road and they don't look bad. I see neighbours getting them done regularly and I just think what a waste of money to be honest.

ThatRareLimeFinch · 08/09/2025 22:13

30 year old. 2 bed house, 2 DCs. i clean the inside of them weekly. just booked window cleaner who comes and the end of every month to do the outside. only because i cant reach one side of the upstairs ones due to how they open.

TheOnlyAletheia · 08/09/2025 22:15

I live rurally so do mine after sowing (March) and after harvest ((August) because of the dust. They get a clean inbetween depending on how grubby they look but it’s low on my list of housework tasks tbh

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 08/09/2025 22:17

I actually have no idea how often the window cleaner comes. Every couple of months maybe?

LakieLady · 08/09/2025 22:19

6-weekly for me. I really notice the difference when they've been done, the view from my front windows is so much clearer.

I couldn't even do the ground floor ones at the front, the house is up steep steps and I wouldn't be able to reach even standing on the top of a step ladder.

FullOfLoveAndObsessiveCleaner · 08/09/2025 22:19

I do mine myself when they need doing and the weather is fine, including sills and facias. Can't understand paying someone else to clean them regularly when more often than not it is going to rain a day or 2 later and get them dirty again.
However, I do appreciate there are some that aren't able to do so or have hard to reach windows, so that's understandable, but not every 2 weeks surely.

TheHateIsNotGood · 08/09/2025 22:23

Having clean windows isn't a waste of money as it does make a difference to the light. Clean half a mucky window and you'll see. Sure you can leave them and think it's fine, I do with a couple that I don't look out of often. Cleaning windows does help preserve the frames and seals as they often get a wash too.

And the insides - easily done with a well wrung out damp cloth. working into those corners and polished off with some vinegar soaked newspaper.

Used to stick my ladders up on a rack on a Robin Reliant van with my buckets in the back. 1980s.
