Clifford Redman, 57, claimed he had severe mobility issues and needed daily help - but he was caught out after being filmed going to the gym and on long walks https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/2105390/dwp-fraudster-claimed-19k-caught-gym

Tip of the iceberg, serious reform needed.

The system is being abused left, right and centre. But I’m sure a load of people will be along in a minute to protest that there is no such thing as benefit fraud. When we know that loads of people are at it.

Mrsmunchofmunchington · 07/09/2025 17:49

”Even”???
Attempting to demonise disabled people with the use of one case about a fraudster.

Check out the actual fraud figures for PIP.
Less than 1%.

WhereAreMyKids · 07/09/2025 17:50

DLA/PIP fraud is miniscule.

Jog on.

Fluffypotatoe123987 · 07/09/2025 17:51

Maybe look at this differently.

Poor health - works with gym on prescription for 12 weeks at the local gym for people with health conditions.

Works with a services learning acceptance and pacing. Builds his fitness up to live his life better.

Has very bad days spends a while resting and then gets good days but the gyms increased the good days. But he hasn't informed anyone that he has improved because its in-between awards and he does have health issues hes just being proactive to improve his life. No hate here. I see this alot working to help people live a more independent life

ninjahamster · 07/09/2025 17:52

Of course you will get occasional PIP fraud. But as somebody who claims it, I can tell you it is an incredibly hard benefit to get, you have to provide so much evidence.

I know so many people who openly admit to claiming it, but there is nothing wrong with them!!

Yes you need medical evidence but GPs and consultants will always record what a patient reports as fact as they don't like to insinuate maligering.

Hey presto you have your medical report signed by a professional ✔️

Apparantly not since so many people are getting away with it. I know 2 people on Pip due to mh who would be perfectly capable to work atleast part time since they are able to have a rich social life.

LittleCarrot12 · 07/09/2025 17:54

The system isn’t sustainable and people can moan all they want but more fraud will be found and less people will be able to claim PIP.
I live next door to a guy who’s on his third “illness” in an attempt at PIP. Amazingly the first 2 conditions disappeared once he was refused. Looks like it was third time lucky for him.

ilovesooty · 07/09/2025 17:55

I suppose we can expect a rash of these threads in the wake of Farage's speech. So many people seem to spend their time side eying other people in case those people might be able to claim something they can't.
I'm sure most people with disabilities would gladly give up the money in exchange for their health.

PIP isn't a work related benefit.

chachahide · 07/09/2025 17:58

It might not be audited as fraud, because it will be classified as legitimate. But I know a few people on PIP who are gaming the system, don’t assume because it’s not showing as fraud people aren’t massively taking the piss. They just haven’t been caught.

It’s not an out of work benefit, you can claim and work. I am on it for MH. I had to provide evidence of appointments, hospital stays, medications, diagnoses.
They contacted my psychiatrist, care coordinator and GP.
I know several people with similar conditions to me who have been refused it.

No, but people using it to fund a lifestyle instead of working is still wrong. Not everyone does but it does happen. My neighbours wife works to meet the minimum earning threshold but they’re struggling financially with 3 kids. Instead of getting a job the husband is applying for PIP to bulk their money.
Oh, but he also works on the sly cash in hand but hasn’t declared that.

Nope. I have never claimed anything, nor am I likely to. What pisses me off about fraudulent claimants (of which there are far more than anyone would like to admit) is that they are taking it away from people who genuinely need it.
I don’t need it, and I pay the same enormous amount of tax, regardless of where it goes, but other, genuine people need far more than they are getting.

ruethewhirl · 07/09/2025 18:07

Yes, that’s right. One person is caught swinging the lead so everyone else must be doing it too. 🙄

Some people definitely do fraud the system but it’s a drop in the ocean compared to the tax evasion of multi millionaires and their companies. That doesn’t get spoken about very much though….I wonder why?

What are your qualifications to assess who's genuine and who's fraudulent?

Edited

Because those people aren’t expecting other low paid people to pay for their Botox/monster drinks via taxes.
It’s still wrong but isn’t going to grate people as much

This is probably the moment to point out to the hard of thinking that PIP is not in fact an out of work benefit. My DS gets PIP. He is currently looking for work after completing his degree. He has worked during a year out. You can get PIP and work. It's there to support you with the additional costs that come with being disabled.

I can’t see how it would be easy to commit fraud. My own PIP application was intense and my dc dla applications were really difficult and needed consultants and school reports ?

chachahide · 07/09/2025 17:58

So that makes defrauding the system and not paying your fair share okay? As long as you’re paying something it doesn’t matter? Demonisation of the poorest people in society, a tale as old as time.

Happyher · 07/09/2025 18:12

I don't need another example, since this example alone, the one where a DWP assessor himself has been caught committing fraud, proves my point.
