to get really annoyed at people who smoke in playgrounds?

Why can't they wait until they leave? I just don't understand why you would ever light a cigarette in a childrens playground.
Am I being unreasonable?

NBU, I also get irritated in the fenced in playground area when folk take their dogs in ignoring the 'NO Dogs' sign.

IdrisTheDragon · 01/06/2008 16:03

I don't smoke but I can understand that for people who do smoke they are likely to want to do it sometimes. A playground is an outside place. I would be annoyed if they deliberately smoked at DS or DD but apart from that I would not get too cross.

SoupKitchen · 01/06/2008 16:03

YANBU, I smoke but would never smoke in front of my own childen let alone in a public place set aside for use by children

bran · 01/06/2008 16:03

I've never seen anyone smoking in a playground. At worst I've seen a few retreat as far as they can go to the edge for a sneaky fag, but never where the smoke drifts over the kids.

Did you cough and swish your hand about in front of your nose?

LuckySalem · 01/06/2008 16:04

NBU at all!!

I know they've changed to laws about smoking indoors to make it better for people but tbh, I wish they'd put it back. At least if I didn't want to get stuck with smoke blown in my face before I just wouldn't go into the pub. However, now if you walk past a pub you walk past a cloud of smoke which honestly is more annoying.

They should ban smoking where there would be kids and food. IMO

foxythesnowfox · 01/06/2008 16:04

Its the scattering of cigarette butts for small children to chew on which piss me off the most.

ChairmumMiaow · 01/06/2008 16:14

YANBU. I do not want my DS or neices exposed to smoke. Fair enough them smoking outside a pub or whatever (I hate it but shrug) but where there are kids - a place that is just for kids!? Why? But then I get really really annoyed when I see parents pushing a pushchair with a fag in their hands.

FrannyandZooey · 01/06/2008 16:18

I would imagine for some it is their only chance to sit down and have a cigarette in a place where their children are NOT going to breathe it in

I agree about the butts

otherwise, I can see it does not look that appropriate but isn't actually harming anyone IMO
the children aren't breathing it, you are out of doors

Mercy · 01/06/2008 16:19

Agree with Franny.

(I could say the same about cars tbh)

JeremyVile · 01/06/2008 16:21

Agree with franny.

I am a (light) smoker but would hate to smoke in front of my ds, let alone a whole schoolyard full. TBH, I avoid smoking in public at all.

But that's about my own sensibilities, nothing else. Smoking in the open air is not going to do anyone else any damage.

barnstaple · 01/06/2008 16:34

Agree with Franny. There is too much talk nowadays about banning things, just because some people don't like something. I'm sick of it. Live and let live. Try some tolerance.

Slinking off now.

parachutes · 01/06/2008 16:34

I don't disagree with smoking itself as it's a personal choice.
I used to be a smoker and gave up when I found out I was pregnant. My husband still smokes occasionally, but we've never allowed any smoking in the house or around ds.
It's not also strictly true re no risk as a recent report suggests that "if you sit within 18 inches of a person who smokes two cigarettes over the course of an hour, your exposure to secondhand smoke could be the same as if you sat one hour inside a tavern with smokers"

I don't think I'll ever unserstand why you would smoke around your children or anyone elses.

parachutes · 01/06/2008 16:38

or even understand it

What really winds my up are the stupid people who insist on walking along holding their fag in their hand at a childs hight, and the ones who drop butts everywhere, and the ones who can't bloody read the no smoking signs at bus stops and stations...... in fact I really hate smokers full stop.

My mother smokes and I hardly ever go to her house as I can't breath and every thing smells.
When she comes to stay I have to get out the fabreeze, I love my mum to bits but I wish she did not smoke

loopylou6 · 01/06/2008 16:40

YANBU if the smoker was sat next to your child, but if they go off to the edge of the palyground whats wrong with that? I am a smoker and i considerate myself to be a 'considerate' smoker, i do not smoke in my house at all and i would never smoke where there are people immediatly around me, but i would sneak off to the edge of the playground if i was desperate coz to be honest i dont like smoking in public, makes me feel like a lepar.

findtheriver · 01/06/2008 16:47

YANBU. Disgusting!!

BroccoliSpears · 01/06/2008 16:55

Ugh. There are always people smoking in our local playgrounds. I just hate the smell, and don't think that a childrens' playground is a reasonable place to smoke.

AuntieMaggie · 01/06/2008 16:58

"too much talk nowadays about banning things, just because some people don't like something"??? smoking affects people's health - it's not just about what people do and don't like. Just because you're smoking outside, it doesn't mean that people and children around you aren't affected by your smoke and aren't breathing in the numerous chemicals that are in cigarettes. Smoking around children is just wrong, as is smoking around other people that don't smoke and possibly affecting their health.

I think smoking should be banned in lots of outside public places - my pet hate is bus shelters when it's raining or outside entrances to places because people are no longer allowed to smoke indoors. I don't smoke so why should i inhale other people's smoke?

A few years ago I had serious surgery and was told to avoid anyone smoking whilst recovering, which became almost impossible as it was winter and smokers waiting to get the bus would smoke in the enclosed bus shelter when it was raining. Guess who got verbally abused when politely asking someone who was smoking near me to not do so?

Smokers should think before they light up near anyone who isn't smoking. Inside or out.

foxythesnowfox · 01/06/2008 17:05

The more children see people smoke, the more normalised it becomes. Which is why children of smokers are more likely to smoke themselves. That's why I don't think people should smoke infront of children.

I don't think smoking should be banned. I think that there should be places to go, licensed pubs, bars, cafes as they do with alcohol.

findtheriver · 01/06/2008 17:12

That's a really important point foxy. It does 'normalise' it. I think if people choose to smoke in their own home, up to them, but don't inflict it on others.

FrannyandZooey · 01/06/2008 17:36

I am more bothered about people smacking their children or shouting at them in front of my child, than people smoking in front of them

we see that most days at my local park

findtheriver · 01/06/2008 17:38

shouting, smacking and smoking - all not good

sweetkitty · 01/06/2008 17:49

The thing that annoys me is a lot of smokers hold their cigarette down by their side when not dragging on it, perfect toddler height.

YANBU think they should be a bit more considerate!

posieparker · 01/06/2008 17:50

It's quite vile when people smoke in playgrounds, I love Lego Land for their designated smoking areas outside.

CoteDAzur · 01/06/2008 17:52

YANBU. It winds me up, too. I used to smoke, but never in front of DD, and definitely not in a playground.
