Why can't they wait until they leave? I just don't understand why you would ever light a cigarette in a childrens playground.
Am I being unreasonable?

Findtheriver - are you serious? You would prefer that the children of smokers lived in smokey homes, rather than smoke free to prevent smoke being out in the air?

What the fuck?

cadelaide · 01/06/2008 22:02

Barbecues?

Totally unnecessary, if people want to burn crappy food and waft around stinky smoke they should do it indoors.

VersdeSociete · 01/06/2008 22:04

I don't have a problem with someone smoking in a considerate fashion in an outdoor place and disposing in a considerate way of the butts. Am amazed how censorious people are on this thread.

findtheriver · 01/06/2008 22:06

I would prefer to not smoke, which is why I don't. It's not complusory ya know

TheWoman · 01/06/2008 22:06

Smokers are always very keen to defend their right to smoke.

I have never understood why their rights are deemed so much more important than the rights of those who don't smoke, and are likely to be negatively affected by those who do.

southeastastra · 01/06/2008 22:07

i smoke, i'm a nervous person, us smoker know our time is limited

TheWoman · 01/06/2008 22:08

"Smokers are always very keen to defend their right to smoke".

Actually, I want to amend that to some smokers.

I smoked for many years, but never around any children.

cadelaide · 01/06/2008 22:08

findtheriver, I think it would be quite hard to smoke someone's second-hand smoke in a park. You would have to stand very close to them, you know

MrsBigD · 01/06/2008 22:09

YANBU I have to admit that during particularly stressed time I was part of a group of mums who would have the odd fag whilst kids at the playground. HOWEVER, we retreated right over to the fence, as far away from the kiddies as possible and made sure there were no fag ends left for little ones to chew on, play with etc.

And yes it's vile

findtheriver · 01/06/2008 22:10

Depends on the size of the park, how many people are there etc. I've been in a playground where there were a family chuffing away pretty close to the play equipment and it bloody well reeked! Vile!

VersdeSociete · 01/06/2008 22:10

The other day I was in a large playground and a rather tired-looking woman was smoking. Her children were some distance away on equipment and she was not blowing smoke on anyone at all. Yet two other women were loudly discussing her smoking. I thought they were far more offensive than she was.

findtheriver · 01/06/2008 22:12

All 3 sound pretty vulgar to me Vers

DirtySexyMummy · 01/06/2008 22:12

findtheriver - you obviously have no understanding whatsoever about addiction, if you can make patronising and ignorant comments like that.

Fillyjonk · 01/06/2008 22:13

ok you all know that outside air isn't magic air, yes?

if it has smoke particles in it-ie if you can smell the smoke-it is doing you/your dcs harm

not a huge amount, possibly, it depends on the total impact

but I don;t want my kids breathing in shite because someone is too bloody idle to move 20 feet away with their cancer sticks

DirtySexyMummy · 01/06/2008 22:13

I refer to your comment of 22.06

Fillyjonk · 01/06/2008 22:14

and addiction doesn't make people behave inconsiderately

that is an entirely different thing

I suspect the filth from the traffic was far more harmful than the minute particles from this woman's cigarette which could possibly have reached anyone in this particular playground.

findtheriver · 01/06/2008 22:15

aaah but their rights are greater than those of your child arent they filly?

VersdeSociete · 01/06/2008 22:17

I do sometimes worry that we are bringing up the moste unbelievably censorious generation of children the world will ever have seen...

findtheriver · 01/06/2008 22:18

I never understand why the argument about traffic pollution is deemed relevant. Why does the fact that our world is (sadly) polluted already, make it ok to add to it??

Fillyjonk · 01/06/2008 22:18

oh god, smokers rights.

oh how my heart bleeds

passive smoking isn't actually very good for you

oh and incidentally, the more minute the particle, the greater the danger as they penetrate more deeply into the lungs

southeastastra · 01/06/2008 22:18

it's a shit habit, eventually it will be banned but we just have to accept that there was time when it was the norm and cut some slack to those that were caught in between

Dalrymps · 01/06/2008 22:18

YANBU i'm sick of people who smoke thinking just because they do it outside it doesn't go in anyones face, it does! Then there's the fags they chuck on the floor that make a total mess! Even worse when people stand right outside the entrace to places smoking cause they can't smoke inside so you have to walk through a cloud of smoke to get in the building
IMO they should go away from entrances/places for kids and smoke there and dispose of their fag ends properly.
I used to smoke so I understand what it's like to want a fag but it's not life ot death for gods sake, you can actually wait and do it somewhere suitable. This gets me sooooo annoyed, especially since ds was born.
Even better still, they should just give up smoking.
Deeeeep breath, ok rant over

ravenAK · 01/06/2008 22:18

I would have thought that too in my smoking days, cadelaide.

But there was a lady smoking at the next picnic table (10 feet away) last time I was in the park & trust me, it was wafting all over me & dd2 (11 weeks).

She was in her 60s & clearly minding her gkids - so I assume smoking around children was acceptable when she had hers. I didn't say anything, or fuss overly about it - dd probably did herself more damage sucking up exhaust fumes on the walk TO the park - but sorry, it's yuk.
