Why can't they wait until they leave? I just don't understand why you would ever light a cigarette in a childrens playground.
Am I being unreasonable?

No YANBU. Smokers shouldn't smoke anywhere where there are kids particularly. It's selfish.

Ripeberry · 01/06/2008 19:06

What about people who smoke in cars whilst their kids are there?
And on top of it all, smoke whilst 8 months pregnant?
Makes me angry then that she complains that her youngest keeps getting nasty chest infections.
Work it out love!

me23 · 01/06/2008 19:13

isn't it illegal to smoke in the school playground? I live in a council flat and it is now illegal the smoke in the outside courtyard! I was surprised that they could do that. as its out in the open, I'm the only resident with a child, so it seems odd people can smoke in a school yard and not in communal areas.

3725Hayley · 01/06/2008 19:15

YANBU - I hate people smoking in parks etc.

Last year went to EuroDisney, and loads of people were smoking in the queue's etc - drove me and DH sooooo mad.

Foul habit.

bluefox · 01/06/2008 19:17

Smoking should be confined to inside of smokers houses. I hate the smell and can smell it outdoors even if the smoker is some distance away.

Blondilocks · 01/06/2008 19:21

I think I've become more intolerant of smoking now that the ban has come in, probably because I don't often get subjected to it so when I do I notice more.

I hate it when people are all hanging around doorways smoking so you have to walk through it.

Eugh.

scottishmummy · 01/06/2008 19:41

my local playground has the usual mix of parents and unfortunately the "I-is-so-cool-I-is-smoking-a-fag-oh-and-feckin-swearing-too-oh-hope-me-mum-doesn't-find-out" yapping loudly and inanely about how drunk/stoned they were.occasionally looking up to shout comments instructions to their precious wee one's

"Hey tofu we have like spoken about this, like no man okay?"

mmmm that was clear.
message understood
as tofu continues to garrotte innocent children

CoteDAzur · 01/06/2008 20:09

Smoking can't be confined to smokers' homes because it is an addiction, and by definition, the addicts need regular fixes through the day.

FrannyandZooey · 01/06/2008 20:11

I'd rather people took their children out to the playground and had a cigarette there, than did it at home where the children have to breathe it

parachutes · 01/06/2008 20:11

but CoteDAzur by that definition they'd be shooting up on the slide

expatinscotland · 01/06/2008 20:12

Like Franny, I'm more concerned with foul language and smacking/swearing at kids than smoking.

Doesn't happen so much around here.

But happened plenty in the last place we lived.

Also drunk teens hanging round the playground.

Janni · 01/06/2008 20:14

I thought I agreed with the OP but then I agreed more with Franny. Just DON'T drop the butts for the babies to chew!

FrannyandZooey · 01/06/2008 20:15

if people smoked more in playgrounds then perhaps all my eBay stuff wouldn't keep arriving reeking of smoke?

berolina · 01/06/2008 20:17

YANBU.

I would ban it within a 5m radius of an under-16. Outside or in. Even in your own house, if you live with children.

Draconian, illiberal and unworkable, I know, but I am so fecking sick of getting a cloud of it in my and dses' faces when overtaken by a smoker on the street; smokers taking up the shelter at the bus stop; getting into the lift to the underground and it stinking; having to screech at ds1 'NO DO NOT PICK THAT UP' when some twunt has dropped his/her fag butt on the ground again in my beloved botanic garden. I have really just about had it.

DrNortherner · 01/06/2008 20:19

STONE THEM IN THE PLAYGROUND. THEY ARE SATAN.

berolina · 01/06/2008 20:24

Slightly OT, but I had a related experience recently. I get to the lift, lady is waiting, drops fag butt on floor and puts it out with foot. I fume but cannot think of anything to say. On the way in my pushchair catches her foot twice, accidentally (really ). The first time I apologise but not the second. She says 'And 'sorry' again, I hope' ). I cannot resist saying 'well, how much consideration someone deserves who throws her fag butts on the floor for my children to pick up, I don't know'. She was genuinely amazed that it would be a problem, asked me what else she was supposed to do, putting it in the bin was a fire risk , I suggested putting it out properly and then putting it in the bin. She said she would try to do it in future - she completely made the impression of one who had just made a new and earth-shattering discovery

parachutes · 01/06/2008 20:25

Are we only allowed to stone them in the playgrounds?

OP posts:
JeremyVile · 01/06/2008 20:26

Despite smoking myself, I rarely feel moved to defend smokers - I get irritated by very inconsiderate smokers as much as anyone else.
But, on a general note, I do find it spooky how demonised smokers are. It's uncomfortable how, with the right nods from the powers that be, a legal pursuit can be so utterly reviled.

Fillyjonk · 01/06/2008 20:27

no yanbu at all

but really, don't smoke in front of kids, don't make other people breathe in your vile smokem its just horrible and anti social. If you smoke around kids you are an irredeemable twunk who needs to take a bloody long look in the mirror.

it perhaps depends on the size of the playground, ours is quite small. If you are talking football pitch size then fine, otherwise just go outside.

otoh I am an Ex Smoker so tend to think oh fgs just give up

posieflump · 01/06/2008 20:28

smoking in playgrounds honestly doesn't bother me at all
I feel for smokers these days, they seem under attack everywhere they go. We don't live in a dictatorship just yet!

ravenAK · 01/06/2008 20:28

How hard can it be to walk out of the playground & watch your kids through the fence whilst chuffing away?! I appreciate that it doesn't make a huge amount of difference which side of a wire fence you're standing on (smoke drifts...), but at least it shows some awareness that playgrounds are for children & children shouldn't be exposed to smoking.

I smoked for 20 years & can honestly say I was never so desperate for a fag that I couldn't've waited till a more appropriate time, anyway.

elkiedee · 01/06/2008 20:28

I could have started this thread, it really ticks me off.

My problem with responses from Franny etc is that if smokers were all considerate thoughtful people who watch who they're blowing smoke on (even outside) and dispose of their cigarette ends properly, I wouldn't have such a problem with them. Every time we go to our local playground with 1 year old ds, I pick up loads of cigarette butts from the "ship" which is designed to be a place for young children to play (as in babies and toddlers) but is also used by the adults to sit on.

There are signs up outside the playground, one has a cigarette crossed through, ie there is a clear No Smoking sign.

Also, the playground is part of a park - there's a nearby cafe with benches outside where the nicotine addicts could sit and have a cigarette. There's also lots of space where they could sit on the ground. Just not in the playground and not leaving cig ends for babies to chew, how hard is that?

parachutes · 01/06/2008 20:31

I don't dislike or get irate about smokers generally; In fact dh has just come in from a furtive fag down the bottom of the garden (watch for my next "am I being unreasonable to loathe and revile smokers who smoke around cows" thread).

I still think that, as an adult, you shouldn't smoke around children and the last place you should think about smoking is in a playground.

OP posts:
posieflump · 01/06/2008 20:32

elkiedee - it might be teenagers at night leaving cigarette butts though

Doodle2U · 01/06/2008 20:34

YABU

It's the only chance for a quiet fag I get all day sometimes.

It's outside.

Unless the said smokers are blowing the fag smoke straight up your childrens' noses, it is not killing them.

Christ, I'm getting heartily fucked off with this holy than thee attitude now-a-days.
