Woman shouted because Dd wee’d in the car park

Hetoldherthatmagicdoesntexist · 05/09/2025 21:56

Dd, 6 and I were at the supermarket today
We were in a rush, had walked all the way back to car, I was struggling with three large bags, putting them in the boot.
Dd was moaning and difficult most of the day, she said she was desperate for the toilet. I said to just wait a moment as I had to put the bags in etc and we’d go back. She started getting upset saying she was really desperate and about to wee and could she wee by our car quickly. I let her.
As I was fastening her car seat, an older woman walked past and shouted’There are loos inside you know!’ in not a very nice way. I shouted back ‘Excuse me?’ She said she was just saying there were loos inside that can be used (again, it wasn’t said in a nice way’ I said to her ‘She’s 6 years and was desperate and couldn’t hold it in, she’s 6!’ She pulled a face and got in her car.
Dd was upset and asked if she’d done something wrong and felt scared of the mean lady.

It really pissed me off, was I out of order??

As an SEN teacher I like to think I’ve seen/heard everything, but this took my breath away.

Oh do get a grip

I’m really shocked, she’s still quite little and cannot hold it when it gets to this stage
It would not bother me to see a child do that either, I completely get it

Then she shouldn’t have got to that stage. She should have gone (maybe at your suggestion, if this is a problem she has) before you left the store. She's not a toddler. At what age will you think she’s too old to wee in public?

MayRecollectionsVary · 05/09/2025 22:53

I'm torn

Because on the one hand, I'm guessing she couldn't have been very well hidden in a car park, so that's not good really.

On the other hand, I once had to pull over and hold an empty plastic bottle in the back of a car for my son to pee in. And I suppose that's not really an option if you have a daughter.

I think OP’s pissed off

Dogs don't know how to use toilets though 🙄

No more than humans do until they are taught how to do it.

Dogs can be trained to use dog toilets, they are a thing! I didnt know that they were until recently. They can be trained to use them at home, so the fact that most owners dont bother to train their dogs surely makes them as lazy and disgusting as the OP has been called.

Well this was in a particularly public place yesterday but I can think of 4 other friends at least whose young children regularly pee outdoors.

i live fairly rurally - maybe it’s a country thing?

Kids weeing in a bush in the country side is clearly different to peeing in a public car park when there are toilets near by. I live fairly rurally and if I’m in a public place with toilets nearby my children use them, it’s not a unique city skill set.

Spookyspaghetti · 05/09/2025 22:54

I think you made the wrong decision. It was unfair on your DD to make her wait until she wet herself, especially if you know that she struggles with holding it.

It was a situation where taking her to the toilet was inconvenient for you but resulted in your DD being embarrassed/humiliated. At 6 she is definitely old enough to understand that you didn’t put her in a great position.

I don’t think the lady should have mentioned it, she was unkind. But, for me, the issue is not that it was disgusting that your DD peed it the street. After all she only a child. But, regardless of if you meant to, it was neglectful in my view to let her wet herself rather than inconvenience your shopping to take her to the loo.

We all make parenting mistakes, I don’t think you should beat yourself up, but I do think you should take on board what people are saying about the level of appropriateness.

As an aside, if she regularly struggles to hold it have you considered a long term urine infection?

They still can’t pee in the toilets at bloody Asda though can they.

Small children is a completely different thing surely?!

No, potty training children are different. People make allowances for 2-3 year olds, because they may be literally just learning to hold it.
I have a 6 year old and there’s no way I’d do this.

Growuppeople · 05/09/2025 22:48

Your disgusting god get over yourself and take her to the toilet! It wasn’t miles away!

The child said she couldn't wait?

GleisZwei · 05/09/2025 22:55

hollyhillyhole · 05/09/2025 22:10

I let my 2 year old discretely pee behind a rock where seemingly nobody was on a beach with no toilet and a man who noticed ripped into me and said how it was not ok for her to do that.

The man was correct.

No this was my favourite comment. The poster thinks they’ve seen/heard everything and is in shock over six year old weeing 😂😂

Hetoldherthatmagicdoesntexist · 05/09/2025 22:01

She was mean, she had no idea of our circumstances and it was none of her business

What circumstances? She was pissing in a public carpark. It's gross. Baring any specific needs she should be able to hold it, otherwise maybe she needs to see a doctor.

Hetoldherthatmagicdoesntexist · 05/09/2025 22:02

Small children is a completely different thing surely?!

I think it’s fine until say age 3, but 6 really is too old IMO. She can hold it when necessary or give enough notice as surely she doesn’t wet herself/wee in the playground at school. Unless an enormous drip feed about a medical need is coming.

EasySqueezy · 05/09/2025 22:56

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 05/09/2025 22:00

It's not specific to Mumsnet. Normal people everywhere don't want to see humans pissing in car parks.

It’s okay for dogs though?

Presumably there was no toilet nearby though? Not the same as walking past a toilet and then peeing in the car park less than a minute later

NaiceBalonz · 05/09/2025 22:57

Absolutely vile.

Cathmawr · 05/09/2025 22:57

Some highly dramatic responses on here 😅 I wouldn't give a shiny shit if I saw a 6 year old having a wee in the car park OP

AHickyFromKenickie · 05/09/2025 22:58

WhereIsMyJumper · 05/09/2025 22:48

Meanwhile, in real life… no, it’s not a problem to let her wee in the car park if you don’t think she could hold it until you got back inside.
I sympathise, my DS is a bit older than your DD and is much better now but when he was 5/6 he was still leaving it until right at the last minute before he would tell me he needed to go. Sometimes I would be in a shop with no loo and a basket of items and have to put the basket down and leg it to the nearest cafe.
Only twice have I pulled the car over and let him wee in some bushes. I’d rather that than wet seats and clothes thank you very much.
Besides, there are animals pissing all over the place.

…meanwhile, back in another dimension of reality. You’re comparing children pissing in public to that of animals doing the same, and so it’s ok…🤷‍♀️

in which case, let’s ALL piss in the street when we’re caught short
…a dog does it,so why shouldn’t I?

Happyhappyday · 05/09/2025 22:59

6 isn’t that little though. I’d expect a child to know when they need to go in enough time for it not to be an emergency. I can’t remember the last time my 6yo DD had a pee emergency.

But I also didn’t understand the number of people I saw with those potty box things attached to push chairs and being used literally 10 feet from the toilet… I mean I get it if the child is potty training but peeing in a box and then chucking it in the bushes when there is a toilet RIGHT there. Grim. Observed at Kew Gardens in the playground.

Justgorgeous · 05/09/2025 22:59

It’s not acceptable at all. She’s 6, not 2!

Grumble1 · 05/09/2025 22:59

EasySqueezy · 05/09/2025 22:56

Dogs are, well dogs. Presumably the OP’s DD is a human child?

Ticktockquack · 05/09/2025 22:59

Genuinely cannot believe peoples attitude on this post. I’ve obviously been raised badly because honestly I’m really really struggling to see the issue! It’s not like she peed in front of the automatic doors.

WildflowerMama · 05/09/2025 23:00

I don’t understand how people can get caught up over things like this. It’s a child, and sometimes children misjudge things, especially when it comes to toileting.

No one was hurt, nothing was damaged. I can’t imagine being so bothered as to shout unkindly at someone, even if I was a bit surprised.
