AIBU to say it isn't unexpected, or a surprise?

What I don't understand is how she got away with only paying the stamp duty she wanted to? I mean, I fyou or I are buying a house we aren't able to just say "I've been advised I only need to pay £x, so that's what I'm paying". Need to go read more

PiggyPigalle · 05/09/2025 12:25

Wonder why when moving from the North to Hove, she chose a conveyancer in Kent.

YanTanTetheraPetheraBumfitt · 05/09/2025 12:26

I can’t imagine she’ll still be an MP after the next election, can’t see her being gifted the “safe seat” of Brighton now (surely they vote Green down there anyway).

Back to trade union life for her!

Very standard arrangement in the media and totally legal. Plenty of BBC "personalities" do the same, see Gary Lineker for example.

He’s not a ‘personality’. He’s an MP. Is it too much to expect him to pay up the tax on earnings he shouldn’t, in m6 opinion, be allowed to have anyway? Plus he did say he had bought a house in his constituency, so it being owned by his partner to avoid tax is somewhat misleading at best, dont you think?

She broke the rules because the rules are massively complicated: I wouldn't have thought her Hove flat was a second home when she had no rights to the house she left in a divorce. It's hardly a loophole: it's a detailed technicality.

nomas · 05/09/2025 12:26

I just didn't buy that she did this unknowingly. Even a rudimentary understanding of the rules should have made her think, hang on, my child is under 18 and I can technically live in that house, so maybe it's my main home for tax reasons. I better call the HMRC to make sure.

If a layperson gets that, then a minister with all those government bodies at her disposal should have known that.

Fionasapples · 05/09/2025 12:26

Good. She's jumped before she was pushed. She's a liar and she tried to blame her tax evasion on others.

WitchesCauldron · 05/09/2025 12:27

BananaPeels · 05/09/2025 12:16

That’s not the issue though. He’s done nothing wrong. the house is owned by his girlfriend. Lots of people plan their tax affairs that way. You might not like good tax planning but it’s legal. he never owed any tax on that. She did however.

Legally may not be wrong but morally very wrong.

I must admit, I feel quite saddened by Angela Rayner’s resignation.

While she wasn’t without her flaws, she brought a rare combination of authenticity, working-class credibility, and conviction to frontline politics — qualities that are increasingly scarce.

Her departure raises genuine concerns about the future direction of the party. Without her voice, there’s a real risk that Labour may drift further toward the centre-right.

The sustained campaign from sections of the right-wing press to discredit her has clearly taken its toll. It’s a sobering and disturbing reminder of the influence the media can wield in shaping narratives.

Working class women and northerners spend their lives having to prove they aren’t thick as shit or grifters- Angela did nothing at all to help that narrative. She’s an embarrassment. She rose in the ranks by pushing her working class background and enriched herself in the process while forgetting the actual working class. Good riddance

YanTanTetheraPetheraBumfitt · 05/09/2025 12:27

And let’s hope she can afford the mortgage on a backbencher’s salary.

MrsSlocombesCat · 05/09/2025 12:27

These people don't even resemble a Labour government. I had high hopes with Angela because I felt she was "one of us." How wrong could I have been. Turns out she's just as greedy as a Tory.

No this is old set of excuses. Added to which she lied about getting bad advice.

booohoooloo · 05/09/2025 12:27

My DH just ran into the room telling me this ..

I have no idea who she is or what she does, only that she is a a member of parliament

no backlash needed before any one starts typing it

This is such a problem: any right-wing party just gets judged with "Ah well, you KNOW they are evil bastards, so that's fine." But any left-wing figures get slaughtered because they have to have higher standards.

As a country, we really just want rich bastards to rule over us and hit us with sticks every now and then. We are utterly inevitable masochists.

No they aren’t that’s the point. The rules on trusts clearly state that if you are a trustee of a property for a minor you are counted as owning the home if she had consulted a trust expert they would have told her this.

GoldThumb · 05/09/2025 12:28

Excellent - am also surprised she jumped before she was pushed.

Can’t stand hypocrites, especially those who so gleefully come for others scalps.

Spare me the female MPs are hounded rhetoric.

She was the biggest hound when it came to pointing out wrongdoings and demanding resignations of others.

Love to see Karma in action.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 05/09/2025 12:28

Ah well at least she'll have lots more time to spend in her beautiful new beach side flat.

To be honest I thought she'd wait until the ethics report was published so that does make me wonder what she expects it to say.

Because HMRC doesn't issue you with a bill. In most conveyancing cases the solicitors will prepare and submit the SDLT returns on your behalf (after you've approved them), and pay the balance due from your funds in the client account.

The vast majority of people will never directly have to interact with SDLT, you just give the money to your solicitors.

MauriceTheMussel · 05/09/2025 12:28

from the BBC

”She says she "deeply regret[s]" her decision not to seek additional specialist tax advice given her position in the government and her "complex" personal situation.
"I take full responsibility for this error," she continues.
"I would like to take this opportunity to repeat that it was never my intention to do anything other than pay the right amount."“

She’s STILL not taking accountability and trying to duck and dive!

Greenwitchart · 05/09/2025 12:29

Good riddance.
I used to support her but stopped the minute she chose to back the government disability benefits cuts. She betrayed her principles and now has shown that she can't be trusted to tell the truth.

Peter Kyle is MP for Hove not the Greens that's Brighton Pavilion constituency.

As a trust expert, I can tell you that this very much depends on the type of trust. There is no blanket rule, and various anti-avoidance legislation further muddies the waters.
