AIBU to say it isn't unexpected, or a surprise?

Farage may be avoiding tax as most people would do. Its perfectly legal. Tax evasion isn't.

Farage isn’t actually a government minister. To state the obvious……

In which case they couldn’t be thrown under the bus at all. 🤷‍♀️

Yes, I’m disappointed but she’ll be back. You can’t keep a good woman down.

A ‘good woman’ - I disagree with your definition.

I half hope she does ‘come back’ - her propensity to blow up is a gift to the opposition.

She shouldn't have even bloody tried to blame them in the first place. It was absolutely shameless and ruthless.

BIossomtoes · 06/09/2025 18:40

She didn’t try to take anyone down with her.

Can you please explain why she attempted to blame her lawyers for not giving her the correct advice?

Shouldnt be an MP either imo. Liars and cheats shouldn’t be in office.

My god there would be an exodus of reform then and also pretty much the whole of the last tory party when they were in power! I just think what she has done is absolute pittance to the tax avoidance and lies made by Farage, boris, sunak etc not even mentioning covid and the lies/dodgy PPE deals! But because she is female and from a working class background this has been made massive

MissAmbrosia · 06/09/2025 20:01

Such snobbery here. She didn't get to be Deputy Prime Minister by being thick and inarticulate. I think she is right to resign as the Labour Party need to hold themselves to higher standards (despite all the shite and corruption carried out by their forebears) I think no-one likes the idea of a working class woman getting above her "station" and she has been held up to an ideal that others have not. Newspaper headlines claiming she owns 3 houses when she does not. People sadly believe any old shite that is published. It all stinks really.

So you think Boris and Liz are intelligent and erudite? Both made it to PM…

I must admit, I feel quite saddened by Angela Rayner’s resignation.

While she wasn’t without her flaws, she brought a rare combination of authenticity, working-class credibility, and conviction to frontline politics — qualities that are increasingly scarce.

Her departure raises genuine concerns about the future direction of the party. Without her voice, there’s a real risk that Labour may drift further toward the centre-right.

The sustained campaign from sections of the right-wing press to discredit her has clearly taken its toll. It’s a sobering and disturbing reminder of the influence the media can wield in shaping narratives.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Oh, sorry. Were you being serious?

I dont like the woman but I have to admit I understand why she thought she was right in what she paid.
she had a quarter share in the family home which she sold to the trust that owned the other 3/4. thinking this left her owning no property and so eligible for the cgt she paid.
no one would have imagined that supervising her sons income and investments til he is 18 would negate this and leave her liable for 40k extra.
she took it at face value as I would have.
it seemed simple.
I cant blame her for wanting her own home and that it was an 800k flat is irrelevant. probably unaffordable now as her pay will drop and she'll have to rent a london flat as she won't have a grace and favour home there now. its gone with he old job.
dont like her but I understand it wasn't deliberate and won't use it as a way to question her morals. she must have been shocked. I doubt she thought her sons trust had any bearing as it was his money not hers.

Mjin · 06/09/2025 20:20

What a stupid comment; says everything about you and nothing about her; jealous are we? I wonder what you do in your life.

LBFseBrom · 06/09/2025 20:21

I agree with you, cheziebabe.

Pinkproseccolady · 06/09/2025 20:25

I do not support any MP's, the rich and famous or just those who have good accountants dodging their fair share of tax, but the hounding of Angela Rayner is either just thinly veiled misogyny or opporunism as Reform are close on her tail in her constituency!

Let's not forget Farage buying house in his wife's name to avoid £44,000 of tax, Nadhim Zahawi forgot to pay 5 million tax and no-one spray painted his house. Jeremy Hunt had around 20 houses and no one asked him how he managed to buy them.

Oh, and Farage recently delivering a presentation on how to avoid tax for the already very rich audience!

Boris is certainly intelligent, a buffoon but an intelligent one. Liz on the other hand is the largest case of reverse imposter syndrome ever known to man/woman

Well then hypocrite! Why are all the Tory politicians currently grinning ear to ear, who god damn lie 10 times before breakfast. And not to mention have done so much worse - have you all forgotten what Robert Jenrick tried to get away with in expense scandals!? He just didn't think he should have to resign for his lies.
I'm shocked at the comments from here. The double standards are insane.

TheHateIsNotGood · 06/09/2025 20:47

It's just a different kettle of fish when you're actually in govt and not constantly critiquing and obstructing from the opposition.

Pot, kettle and all that. I'm sure Ange will be back, and probably a better politician after this experience. I'd rather a political landscape that includes Rayner than one that doesn't.

BlakeCarrington · 06/09/2025 20:57

BIossomtoes · 06/09/2025 16:31

That looks suspiciously like libel to me. I’d be very careful if I were you.

Tax avoidance is legal. Not paying tax that’s due is evasion, and that’s illegal. HMRC doesn’t take “ooops, didn’t know” as a valid excuse.

That’s not the issue though. He’s done nothing wrong. the house is owned by his girlfriend. Lots of people plan their tax affairs that way. You might not like good tax planning but it’s legal. he never owed any tax on that. She did however.

Exactly this. I own a house and my partner owns a house we are not married and neither of us has cheated the tax system in any way. Nigel Farage has done nothing wrong.

Fraudornot · 06/09/2025 21:23

@Pinkproseccoladygive over! She did wrong - nothing wrong with pointing that out and looks like she might have even done her disabled son wrong by taking money out of his trust fund to pay for a new house.

Fraudornot · 06/09/2025 21:26

@cheziebabebut isn’t the point that she took the money out the trust fund to find another home which she didn’t need. She could have gifted that to her son and with a 50% share he would already have been able to stay in the house for life. She used the trust fund for her own personal gain.

Fraudornot · 06/09/2025 21:27

@MissAmbrosiaI think more to the point no one likes a chancer and a hypocrite.

Really interested to read the vituperative messages here. Presumably none of you have ever made a mistake, in spite of having a disabled child and complex family setups. Mind you, women are often very spiteful and envious. Given the awful situations Mumsnet contributors seem to get themselves into I was expecting a rather more nuanced response.

Fraudornot · 06/09/2025 21:40

@Doorwiseyou really think it is ‘just a mistake’ for the housing minister to get this wrong 😂😂
