Back to school skinnies - what to say

broadly · 05/09/2025 11:55

Private school (relevant as this relatively is expensive) - mums arriving back significantly smaller than they were before the summer.

Do I say anything? Like they look great? Or just ignore it. None of them are really good enough friends to openly ask about WLI, and I wouldn't ask how. But just to acknowledge?

I must say, though, I don’t think I would notice another school mum’s change of weight unless it was so drastic they were basically unrecognisable. They’re usually wearing coats anyway.

LifeIsTooFlippingShort · 05/09/2025 17:12

Digdongdoo · 05/09/2025 12:26

Why is the expensive private school relevant?

Yep, scratching my head about that statement.🤣

Camaraderie · 05/09/2025 17:20

And quelle surprise, the OP has not returned 🙄

It's normally the face I notice, as I spend more time looking at it than their bottom!

elQuintoConyo · 05/09/2025 17:43

"WASSAP SKINNY RICH BITCHES?" should suffice.

Drastic is the word, talking size 20 down to a size 10 for some.

OP posts:
Jaws2025 · 06/09/2025 11:00

You're jumping the shark there OP, no one loses that much in the space of the summer holidays.

Over the course of the summer holidays? Six weeks? Really OP? That’s very hard to believe? Most people lose about 2lbs a week, drastic weight loss over 6 weeks would be 2-3
stones max, not 5 dress sizes.

Annoyeddd · 06/09/2025 11:04

Don't worry they will soon be pregnant (ozempic babies) or having dentures (ozempic teeth) if the side effects kick in

OrsolaRosso · 06/09/2025 11:04

If you are not close enough to them to know how they have done it, then you are not close enough to comment.

iamjustwinginglife · 06/09/2025 11:10

You’ve says that none of them are good enough friends to ask, so I’d just stick with “Good morning!”

mamagogo1 · 06/09/2025 11:17

Say nothing, it’s feeding the beast. As about their holidays by all means but nothing about their looks.

I really worry about the long term medical effects of these drugs, other so called wonder drugs ended up having long term side effects only discovered after long term use eg metaformin causes liver damage.

Complete. nonsense. No one loses that much weight is 6 weeks or so.

Good grief, folks are so obsessed with other peoples weight and these drugs, this has to be a new low.

Thepeopleversuswork · 06/09/2025 11:27

Adding to the list of people who find it incredible that anyone would find it appropriate to remark on someone’s weight.

What arw you thinking?

Notagain75 · 06/09/2025 11:29

Why do you need to say anything at all?
Just asking if they had a good summer.

Brightlittlecanary · 06/09/2025 11:29

Fragmentedbrain · 05/09/2025 14:37

I hate folk referring to women (human people!) as "skinnies".

Jesus.

Yup, and if soneone posted a thread about the back to school fatties and if they should comment on their bodies there would be an outcry, but the envy of slim women is so ingrained in some it’s deemed ok to post stuff like this, so others can jump in and make bitter comments too,

KateBushAgain · 06/09/2025 11:30

Jesus!
No !
Don’t comment on other people’s bodies.

I am a skinny, I dont care saying that.

There is even a tan called Skinny Tan. It's not like saying fattie.

OP posts:
FinallyMovingHouse · 06/09/2025 12:59

I would not comment, as:
a. Two of my 3 DC have informed me and their father many, many times that we must not comment on people's looks/dress/make up etc. They are what they are and are portraying who they want to portray and it's none of our beeswax (you can imagine the lectures!).
b. If they're skinny for a negative reason (e.g. eating disorder/cancer), you commenting is not going to help them.
c. In any case, we should be trying not to focus on weight as a 'thing'. Ignore.

Calliopespa · 06/09/2025 13:23

Well whatever you do op, DON'T say "wow! You look to have lost 10 sizes since I last saw you!"

Because they really won't have, and it would be quite the statement about how you had conceptualised them.

Calliopespa · 06/09/2025 13:27

Yes I worry this too.

Part of me is pleased that people who have suffered much prejudice or genuine health issues on account of their (often blameless) weight gain are now able to grapple with it..

But another part of me worries about the effect and feels it will actually make competitive thinness worse, not better.

Come on ladies! We are better than this surely? Let's all be healthy and accepting (and self-accepting) grown ups.

hydriotaphia · 06/09/2025 13:28

Hi OP, here's a script for you: "Gosh Talulah, you are looking much more svelte after the summer. You really used to be quite a heifer, no offence of course. Have you been using this Ozempic drug that I've been hearing so much about?" You're welcome xxx

Complet · 06/09/2025 13:39

Why on earth would you ask if they were on weight loss injections?!! I’m far from the arbiter of etiquette, but honestly!! What’s the saying, ‘money doesn’t buy class’?

Drastic is the word, talking size 20 down to a size 10 for some.

Sure. That's absolutely happened. Multiple women you are loosely acquainted with have lost 10 stone over the last two months.
My rough calculations puts them in a calorie deficit of 7000 per day, which sounds completely realistic.

Surely that’s a dangerous amount to lose over the summer hols…and I know private schools have longer holiday.
Say nothing unless they ask.
