I need to talk about this

Basically what the title says. And I’m posting in AIBU for traffic.

i am very nervous to post this

35F, he is 32M. We do not live together. I have children from previous relationship and he has not met them - important info.

I am in an abusive relationship. There is no question or doubt about it. We have been together for coming up to a year, yes I know it has not been long. I had rose tinted glasses on up until April/May time this year and I have tried to end the relationship a few times.

i need to tell someone, anyone about what happened this morning. I had stayed at his this weekend whilst my children were with exDP. We had actually had quite a nice weekend up until late last night where we got home from a date night I had organised where suddenly the cheating claims came out etc etc etc. This morning it kicked off again as I tried to express my hurt calmly about something and he just hit the roof and told me to get the fuck out of his house so, I proceeded to do so by getting myself ready, packed my things and went downstairs to say goodbye I shall be leaving now. He went absolutely insane, and I mean insane. He was screaming at the top of his voice against the fireplace wall, punched himself in the head and proceeded to scream at me, in my face calling me all the names under the sun and he ran into the kitchen where the back door is to exit so I could leave and he picked up a knife. When I tell you I was scared, I was terrified so I rushed to unlock the back door to escape. He proceeded to hold the knife against his own wrists and scream at me im going to slit my wrists and your going to watch me die. I obviously begged and pleaded with him not to do that, knife still in his hand and he was shouting that nothing would satisfy him more knowing that he dies and I watched him. He then held the knife in the air so I ran back to the back door and he screamed at me to shut it and I said no, he slammed the knife down and said shut the door so I did. He was screaming at me that I drive him to this, I’m narcissistic im evil, all the usual abuse I get almost daily at this point. I was shaking, sobbing, and he went and sat down and then was accusing me of having another boyfriend, that I’ve manipulated every man I’ve been with. Just tearing my character down with false accusations which again is something I’m very used too. He held his fist up to me too before I went upstairs to get changed, and he chased me up the stairs and got in my face to shout at me to tell him what I was saying to his face.

i physically cannot leave. I am trapped. After this, he acted like nothing had happened. He was laughing at social media, trying to make jokes whilst I was completely numb all afternoon waiting for the time I can leave to have my children back.

in the times I’ve tried breaking up with him before but I haven’t physically been with him, he’s found me and he’s gone hysterical at me until I’ve changed my mind or he threatens to attack me or come into the place I am and confront me, or he’s gotten into his car and screamed at me where I am until I tell him and then he threatens suicide.

please do not judge please be kind.

i feel like I’m dealing with someone who has a serious split personality disorder. I do not want the police involved, but I do need to leave. I’m working with a therapist currently to understand why I allowed this in the first place. I’m a lot stronger now but the reactions I get terrify me, especially today.

i just needed to get this out and I just need to hear that what I am experiencing is not ok. Apparently I’m the evil bitch.

You live with him? And your children haven’t met him?

Laxonaweekend · 31/08/2025 20:34

So if you live separately, what do you mean that you “can’t leave him”

you have your own home. With your children.

You need to get the police involved

it is that simple

Laxonaweekend · 31/08/2025 20:35

Lostandscared1 · 31/08/2025 20:34

We do not live together

So how come you are “trapped”?

you have your own home.

call the police when he starts threatening

Gerardormikey · 31/08/2025 20:35

Where are you now? Are you safe?

If you are still with him and you can’t leave, please call the police.

Jesus this is awful

Of course you can leave. He won’t kill himself, he’s using that as a tool of manipulation. And being blunt even if he does he’d be doing you a favour. But he won’t.

I’d be worried he might come round to yours though - are you safe?

I am home, with my children and I am
safe. I’ve blocked him in the past and he ends up calling me from a withheld number constantly until I answer

You can leave! And you will. You have your own home. If he has a key, change the locks. Call the police, tell them what he did. You have your own house, which is a bonus. You can get away.

Gerardormikey · 31/08/2025 20:37

Oh and when he threatens to kill himself, that’s when you walk out, not beg. Because he won’t, he had no intentions of doing so. That was a control tactic.

No he would not do this. He likes to pretend everything is now fine and he doesn’t have to have any accountability. I know his pattern very well

Please contact the Police and then Women’s Aid. I’m afraid he will kill you, leaving your children without their mother.

Well don’t answer withheld numbers
shrug if he threatens suicide
Cal the police if threatens you

and fgs…. Stay single for some time after this to take stock and be at home and enjoy being single

If you have an iPhone you can set it up to silence unknown callers.

Thank Christ for that.

You can leave him. You report his behaviour to the police. You block him on everything. If he turns up to your house, you call the police.

And I know it’s a pain, but change your phone number.

Gettingfitorbust · 31/08/2025 20:39

Call Women’s Aid OP. They can support you with this.

Cherrysoup · 31/08/2025 20:39

You really must involve the police and get away from this psychopathic behaviour. You can never involve your children in this, there is zero future in it. If he threatens to harm himself, call an ambulance. Don’t ever go back to his house or allow him into yours, even when the dc aren’t there. If he has a key, change your locks. If he kicks off trying to get to you, call the police. Protect yourself, because his next move to escalate and try to persuade you to stay with him is to hurt you.

I think you are right. I’m so scared about getting them involved but I’m starting to really worry he has the capacity to kill me. He is so utterly obsessed with controlling me

I was married to a man like this for four long years. Don't do what I did and believe in all the empty promises or even how it was my fault he was that way. Do not go back. Tell the police and get an injunction order so he cannot approach you or your home. These men are dangerous and it will escalate. I fled with a two year old and 50p and never ever looked back (18 years ago now). He's still single and his child (now adult) has nothing to do with him.

I'm so sorry this is happening. Do you have someone in real life you could tell this to who could be of practical help? I do think you need to find the courage to speak to the police if you can. You won't be able to reason with him to get out, you need to find a way to walk away. So much love to you, you can get there x

DiscoBob · 31/08/2025 20:41

If you don't live together go to your house and call the police and women's aid. Tell police he is violent and threatening you and himself with a knife.

Do not speak to him and do not answer the door if he comes to your home.

I know it's hard but you are fortunate you have your own home to go to. If he has a key change the locks.

If you don't do this you may well end up in hospital or much worse. He needs to be arrested.
