I need to talk about this

Basically what the title says. And I’m posting in AIBU for traffic.

i am very nervous to post this

35F, he is 32M. We do not live together. I have children from previous relationship and he has not met them - important info.

I am in an abusive relationship. There is no question or doubt about it. We have been together for coming up to a year, yes I know it has not been long. I had rose tinted glasses on up until April/May time this year and I have tried to end the relationship a few times.

i need to tell someone, anyone about what happened this morning. I had stayed at his this weekend whilst my children were with exDP. We had actually had quite a nice weekend up until late last night where we got home from a date night I had organised where suddenly the cheating claims came out etc etc etc. This morning it kicked off again as I tried to express my hurt calmly about something and he just hit the roof and told me to get the fuck out of his house so, I proceeded to do so by getting myself ready, packed my things and went downstairs to say goodbye I shall be leaving now. He went absolutely insane, and I mean insane. He was screaming at the top of his voice against the fireplace wall, punched himself in the head and proceeded to scream at me, in my face calling me all the names under the sun and he ran into the kitchen where the back door is to exit so I could leave and he picked up a knife. When I tell you I was scared, I was terrified so I rushed to unlock the back door to escape. He proceeded to hold the knife against his own wrists and scream at me im going to slit my wrists and your going to watch me die. I obviously begged and pleaded with him not to do that, knife still in his hand and he was shouting that nothing would satisfy him more knowing that he dies and I watched him. He then held the knife in the air so I ran back to the back door and he screamed at me to shut it and I said no, he slammed the knife down and said shut the door so I did. He was screaming at me that I drive him to this, I’m narcissistic im evil, all the usual abuse I get almost daily at this point. I was shaking, sobbing, and he went and sat down and then was accusing me of having another boyfriend, that I’ve manipulated every man I’ve been with. Just tearing my character down with false accusations which again is something I’m very used too. He held his fist up to me too before I went upstairs to get changed, and he chased me up the stairs and got in my face to shout at me to tell him what I was saying to his face.

i physically cannot leave. I am trapped. After this, he acted like nothing had happened. He was laughing at social media, trying to make jokes whilst I was completely numb all afternoon waiting for the time I can leave to have my children back.

in the times I’ve tried breaking up with him before but I haven’t physically been with him, he’s found me and he’s gone hysterical at me until I’ve changed my mind or he threatens to attack me or come into the place I am and confront me, or he’s gotten into his car and screamed at me where I am until I tell him and then he threatens suicide.

please do not judge please be kind.

i feel like I’m dealing with someone who has a serious split personality disorder. I do not want the police involved, but I do need to leave. I’m working with a therapist currently to understand why I allowed this in the first place. I’m a lot stronger now but the reactions I get terrify me, especially today.

i just needed to get this out and I just need to hear that what I am experiencing is not ok. Apparently I’m the evil bitch.

Thank you to everyone’s input. I just wanted to be heard tonight and everyone’s advice is really useful. I know I need to get the police involved.

Op have you ring WA? Because since you said you would, you’ve been posting on mumsnet

MyGingerNinja · 31/08/2025 20:59

Please ring the Police this is a very risky situation and although you said you don’t want to involve the Police this is definitely a situation where you must.. also ask them for a Clare’s Law disclosure so you will know if he has committed domestic abuse offences like this against others which may further your resolve to get out of this situation which you need to for your own and your children’s sake and safety.

I think I’m going to call women’s aid now

They're not open. Phone the National Domestic Abuse Helpline

wrists and scream at me im going to slit my wrists and your going to watch me die. I obviously begged and pleaded with him not to do that,

don’t beg and plead op, that is precisely what this drama llama wants.

Shrug, tell him that you won’t be around to watch him die because you’re leaving to go home. And do it

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 31/08/2025 21:01

I would ask Mumsnet to move this to the Relationships board, OP.

Tinytigertail · 31/08/2025 21:01

You need a restraining order and you absolutely do need police involvement. If he is a serving officer (and sadly this is not as uncommon as you'd think) call Women's Aid for advice and support. Please get help, these things always escalate and you are putting yourself in danger if you do not get this abuser out of your life.

paulhollywoodshairgel · 31/08/2025 21:01

Please make a police report. He threatened you and held you against your will. Record every phone call and keep every message from now on. Change locks in case he’s got a key. Women’s aid offer amazing support for leaving abusive partners. You also have a huge support system here. Keep safe xx

Starlight7080 · 31/08/2025 21:01

You need to involve the police.
For your kids sake you have to stop letting him have all the control.
If you have not by now then he is probably thinking you won't.
Change your number. Get a camera outside your house. Avoid him at all costs.
Also he won't kill himself and really its not your problem if he does. But its a well known tactic to control people.

Bedtimeread · 31/08/2025 21:02

You need to request a Claire’s law- he may have history of this. Report it to the police and get a restraining order. I’m sure you know trying to leave a relationship like this is high risk and you need support and a safety plan. Please reach out for help asap. Xxx

budlea64 · 31/08/2025 21:02

All good advice so far.
Remember you aren't responsible for him, his happiness or anything he does. He's mentally ill and probably a psychopath or has a personality disorder. Prisons are full of these men.
The police also do a search using 'Claire's Law' and find out if he has a history of abuse. Even if he doesn't though he's manipulative and dangerous and will never change. I know, I was married to one and had to run away in the middle of the night.
Get a restraining order. Be strong and don't give in.

Irisilume · 31/08/2025 21:02

Good god, call his bluff and just ignore him. If he does hurt himself (which I highly doubt he will) that's not your fault at all.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 31/08/2025 21:02

The reason I say that, OP, is because of the number of posters here - not all of them but several - who have focused on the suicide threats (and rightly think you shouldn't worry about him killing himself) but have not taken on board that he has threatened to harm you as well.

Starlight7080 · 31/08/2025 21:03

How does he know how to find you? When you are not at home .
If he comes to your work then again call the police. Dont talk to him or let him try to control the situation. Just call the police right away .

90yomakeuproom · 31/08/2025 21:03

OP, I am/was in a very very similar relationship to this until a few weeks ago. Exactly the same patterns including the constant calls if blocked. The abuse and shouting and messages and then the next day complete love bombing and manipulation about fault and blame. I knew he was bad news but I cared about him so much and kept going back as I thought it would be different this time. It wasn't.
I never thought I would allow this behaviour, I'm a strong person, not a pushover and I still find it hard to see myself as a victim. I completely understand how hard this is.

Jasrai · 31/08/2025 21:04

It's poor advice to ignore it because abusers tend to act when they don't think they've got anything to lose. Threatening suicide is a homicide red flag. The OP needs immediate professional advice.

nocoolnamesleft · 31/08/2025 21:04

He won't kill himself. He might well kill you. This is a significantly dangerous level of abuse. Speak to WA. Call the police. But have no contact with him. Where would you children be if he killed you?

Joeylove88 · 31/08/2025 21:05

He sounds completely unhinged and I would be terrified of him showing up at my home with my children in the house and him doing something crazy so you absolutely need to report this to the police right now for their sakes. Do not go anywhere near him again block him and ignore all calls from a withheld number. Is there anyone family or friends who can support you in being there for you if he shows up unexpectedly or could someone have a word with him to get him to leave you alone? He sounds either very mentally unwell or a massive abusive c*nt who is dangerous and needs locking up!

MySaintedAunt · 31/08/2025 21:06

delayrepayagain · 31/08/2025 20:38

Please contact the Police and then Women’s Aid. I’m afraid he will kill you, leaving your children without their mother.

Exactly this. They will know how to advise you.
I'd also suggest speaking to a close friend or family member you trust, so you're not carrying this on your own.

I agree completely, and am very concerned about well-intentioned but I think misconceived advice along the lines of "oh just ignore him, good riddance if he does kill himself".

Lougle · 31/08/2025 21:07

@Lostandscared1 if you feel trapped, you are trapped, and nobody should be minimising that. It doesn't mean you can't leave. It just means that you need help and a plan to do it. You need to phone the agencies other posters have mentioned. You need them to help you, to help you be safe. But you do have to leave, and sooner rather than later.

gamerchick · 31/08/2025 21:08

You need to get the police involved OP. He knows this approach works, when it doesn't it'll get worse.

Go to the police and ask for help.

Laura95167 · 31/08/2025 21:08

You need to leave him and mean it.

Does he know where you live?

You need to involve the police.

Im not convinced he will harm himself but if he did. Its not your fault or responsibility. You cant love this man better.

You need to tell people IRL about this, hes dangerous enough. The police should take this very very seriously.

In the meantime you need to document the incidents. So that when you are ready there is evidence.

Please be safe.

Busted2006 · 31/08/2025 21:09

this is scary OP. Think of your children and leave, forever
