Couple having sex in front of window

doremifaso · 31/08/2025 10:05

My children’s bedrooms looks out toward a house in the distance that has a bedroom in which looks like a converted loft. They have big floor to ceiling windows and NO curtains.
We were told by my neighbour once that he saw the occupiers there having sex in full view in front of the window - this was during an afternoon.
My husband also witnessed their act just last night when settling the kids to bed. It’s not hard to miss because their light is on and they’re BIG windows. My husband said he saw a lot of detail.
Not to sound prude but I’m really concerned about my children one day seeing them doing it. I have both sons and a daughter and don’t really want to expose them to sex in this way.

I’ve been told I don’t really have much right to complain because it’s within their own home but I am thinking of writing a letter to politely ask if they would be able to get some blinds or curtains installed.
If they ignore it, is there anything else I could do?
What would you do?

Posters who are obsessed with the distance… it’s much less than a mile away. You don’t need binoculars to see. Anyone with decent eyesight can make out what they’re doing without purposefully ‘looking out for it’.

Do you want me to include a map or sketch for further analysis?

I would not write a note or contact them directly in any way - if they're exhibitionists they might get off even more on being able to picture the exact people or children who might be seeing them having sex.

I'd either make any contact anonymous (and I'd focus on how they are soon going to be reported to the police, not on asking them to think about who might be seeing them - they don't care and they might even like that), or I'd go straight for the non-urgent police enquiry.

And reviewing the links kindly provided by others, emphasising to the police that (a) they are visible to children / minors, and (b) that you are distressed by it, meets the threshold for prosecution. Not that the police would necessarily go down that road (at first), just that they would have an offence to take seriously. Intent is also necessary, eg so maybe the police would warn them in the knowledge that if an offence is likely if they repeat it.

Reallyneedsaholiday · 31/08/2025 13:13

I'd "tell" them, not in a "I don't want me/ my husband/ children to see" but in a "giving you a quick heads up, we're you aware that neighbours CAN see you" kind of way.
My own neighbours teenage daughter used to have a shower, and then practise singing, in the nudes, in front of her mirror. I just went over to flag it up. Not because she was "wrong" for doing it, but because she was unaware that she was exposing herself in this way.

How old are your kids? If they are maybe 5 or 6 I would walk past the neighbours' house on your way everywhere and tell your kids to point and say really loudly, "Mummy, I saw that man's willy through the window!" really loudly the next time you pass them on the street.

Honestly, the last thing I would want to do is draw the attention of someone with at the very least a probable exhibitionism kink to my specific children, or give that person the ability to picture anyone in my family as the audience next time they do it.

80smonster · 31/08/2025 13:15

Had you considered blinds for your house? I’d tell you to stop looking through my windows if that letter appeared on my doorstep, or even forward to the police: peeping toms! Are you in a newbuild by chance? They are often very clumsily squished into landscapes in my opinion.

There’s a very interesting effect on these threads. The serious-minded posters seem to have the more lurid imaginations: full on Amsterdam porn show right in your face in the suburbs, that sort of thing.

We have no idea what the details of distance and likelihood of being seen are!

Make me laugh if the OP sends the police round and the couple turn out to be the local Inspector and his/her partner.

Stranger things have happened. I did briefly wonder if this couple were on Only Fans or similar and were going about their 'job' with the cameras on them, needing the curtains open to maximise the light. Well stranger things and all that ....

In all seriousness, they may not realise how visible they are.

My mum likes to wander around her bedroom half clad with the curtains open, and I remember going to our neighbours' house to babysit when I was a teenager and realising that they must be getting a front row view of my mum's tits every day from their living room window.

You could leave them a note saying, "Please close your curtains, our children can see you having sex."

SerendipityJane · 31/08/2025 12:08

The OP said a converted loft. I'd be curious to see the physics of "passing by".

The loft window will not be on the moon you know. It's perfectly easy to see into a loft window if people are shagging right by it. 🙄(Especially if they have the lights on.) It's just a few feet above the bedroom windows.

Strawberrydelight78 · 31/08/2025 13:19

Put a note through their door. They might not even realise they can be seen.

Sunshineandoranges · 31/08/2025 13:19

YetanotherNC25 · 31/08/2025 10:16

You could not look? Your DH has clearly watched them ‘in the distance’ to see that level of detail. Close your curtains if you don’t want to see.
They’re allowed to have sex in their house. They’re also allowed to to choose not to have curtains spoiling their floor to ceiling windows.
And don’t write to them or you’ll sound even more like a prude.

I don’t agree. When I was younger I used to dress in front of an uncurtained window at night with the light on. I didn’t realise that people could see me. With light turned off, no problem. Someone told me which was a bit embarrassing but far better than continuing undressing so people could see me. I would drop a note perhaps.

What a load of crap.

OP leave a passive aggressive note (normally completely unacceptable, but ok for this instance) saying every window they can see has people being subjected to their sex life.
Also say if you’re being coerced into displaying your sex-life that it is a crime and maybe women’s aid can help with that.

(obviously needs a rewrite but you get the message)

Outwiththetruth · 31/08/2025 13:23

Definitely exhibitionists. They know that people live within view of their large uncovered windows. There has been a lot of comments like 'It's their own business 'and 'dont look' well sorry I would not want my young kids Subject to this .I would actually go and say something. This woke do whatever you want and fuck everyone else attitude sure stinks.

Police

Let them deal with it

How far is it though? “Much less than a mile away” could be half a mile (or more), 400 yards, 100 yards, 10 yards etc.

I strongly suspect that it’s quite a long way away otherwise you’d have said upfront that it’s just a few yards.

Allthegoodhorses · 31/08/2025 10:34

I can’t believe some of these responses. To me it’s public indecency. I would take photo evidence and go to the police.

Only going to work if OP has a camera with a telephoto long distance lens given the house is "in the distance"

YankSplaining · 31/08/2025 13:31

They’re doing it on purpose. I have exhibitionist fantasies, and years ago, my husband and I had sex in front of an uncovered window. But it was in total darkness, twenty-eight floors up, in a building that had no other buildings of that height nearby, because we weren’t trying to violate anyone by making them witness sex they hadn’t consented to see.

100 yards is "less than a mile away".

Any chance of an idea of scale (fnarr, fnarr) are we talking feet or yards. I've just looked across my road, and it's 20 metres from my window to the house opposites downstairs front window. And unless they were at it on the top bunk of a bunk bed, I wouldn't see anything, even with stadium floodlighting and someone selling T-Shirts outside.

A diagram might help ?

Drowningincokezero · 31/08/2025 13:34

I had a bf once who didn't close his curtains while dressing. One day he received a polite note from a neighbour pointing out that as she had young children, please would he mind being more careful about what might be inadvertently exposed in his bedroom window. It made him a little embarrassed but neither of us thought it was out of order at all, just something that hadn't crossed his mind and of course she had a good point.
I wouldn't think twice about dropping a polite note through their door, it's important that your kids don't see this especially when it can be easily remedied. You don't necessarily have to reference the sex, they'll get the hint.

Notmyreality · 31/08/2025 13:34

SweetcornFritter · 31/08/2025 13:05

Obviously it’s not a mile away.

Or 0.75miles away. Or 0.5miles away. So many people being so literal on this thread.

Robin67 · 31/08/2025 13:35

The more I think about this, the more certain I am that if I were in this position (yours, not theirs 😉) then I would email the police/ online chat and inform them of public indecency and lewd acts in public. Nothing much will come of it. But even if they talk to them about it, it might bring about a change in behaviour.

Either that or crowd fund some curtains for them and leave them on the front door

crazeekat · 31/08/2025 13:36

Honestly everyone saying look away shut ur curtains. I’m sure if ur were YOUR kids it would be a difference story. Yes they are entitled to do what the want in their own home but to do it in full view of anyone they’re either doing it deliberately or don’t realise folk can see. I think a note to say in the first instance would be welcomed by most people and if it doesn’t stop or changes are made ie curtains etc then I would threaten with further complains to authorities. Just because things happen in your own home doesn’t mean it’s ok. No one need to see that crap.

Fair point, if they are actually perverts then embarrassing them won't help.

Glowstickparty · 31/08/2025 13:38

There is a fine line here. If they know they can be seen it’s public indecency and can be reported I expect. Maybe send a note first and see if it stops if it doesn’t I would see if it’s reportable. No-one’s young children need to watch.
