Posting here for traffic.

My DD starts year 7 next week. Local secondary. Nothing fancy.

She and we are respectful of uniform policy and have purchased everything we need to. She looks bloody smart and we (and she) can't wait for her to start.

As 11 year old girls will do, they have tried their whole set up in front of their friends and all of them said the same thing:

"You will get sent home with those shoes"

They throw detentions out for the most minor of uniform infractions and DD is now having a massive anxiety spiral that she's going to get a detention or worse sent home 1st day because of her shoes.

I spoke to a friend who works in the school office and showed her a picture and her response was "oooh, I'm not sure. Air Force 1s are the best way to go"

Since when have trainers been a smarter, more acceptable form of shoe than a patent loafer??!!!

For full disclosure she has chosen the Kickers Edie loafer as in the link

https://www.kickers.co.uk/adult-women-edie-loafer-patent-leather-black/14913640.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=UK+-+Kickers+-+Search+-+Brand+-+Core+-+Broad&utm_term=kickers&utm_content=brand+-+Kickers&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=20162340688&gbraid=0AAAAADiNwZXHWpJ1LFmAfTE2drVjkEy8k&gclid=Cj0KCQjwwsrFBhD6ARIsAPnUFD1w_j6Ufhx1cfFv1a1fF0Ageht-fZYRGu_xo9ofOilAOdjE7KgGjEgaAoLrEALw_wcb

This school stipulates that hair past chin lemgth needs to be in a ponytail with a hair band that is the closest colour to the individuals hair colour, yet believes that a trainer is smarter/more acceptable than the loafer.

AIBU here?! I know trainers are more acceptable these days but are they really considered smarter considering how rigid they are on the smaller items?!

Those shoes wouldn’t have been allowed when I was in school 30 odd years ago when Kickers were a big deal. They won’t be allowed now.

I hate kids being allowed to wear trainers as school shoes but how on earth can you consider those practical school shoes?? Look at the deal on them! Of course Air Force 1s are better than that! They’re pretty much high heels. For school!

Send them back and get decent shoes. Like flat ones. Like actual school shoes.

Mumoftwoboysaged4and5 · 30/08/2025 22:43

The amount of pearl clutching on here tonight seriously! They are the EXACT ones we all wore in the early 00s and yet somehow we survived without falling down the stairs, deforming our feet or facing the wrath of teachers (who apparently have nothing better to do then monitor girls feet). Honestly people need to get a grip!

I was only allowed this type of shoe when I was about 14/15 and literally everyone else had a pair by that point so I wore down my mum. Heels that high at 11 are bonkers!! It’s great that the school don’t allow it, the girls will have plenty of time in their lives to wear heels if they want, and of course they can wear what they like outside school.

Policy says no heels or stiletto. I clearly have a different definition of heels and maybe I was being massively nostalgic when she chose them in the shop

Thankyou for your feedback DH is ordering AF1s as we speak and she can follow the herd as every alternate (less heel) I have showed her has been a no.

I just hate that trainers are more acceptable!!

They're far more comfortable and practical than the shoes you've bought her! As pp have said, the heels are too high.

TomatoSandwiches · 30/08/2025 22:49

At least this thread has reminded me to block the schools FB page so I don't end up having to read the 300 posts of other parents arguing these points over and over again.... and the pictures of sad face students in inappropriate shoes.

Thanks 😂

Nope. This hasn’t been the case for years. Schools provide a logo version of some items and then alternatives that are cheaper. It’s even legislation now to offer cheaper alternatives, offer a range of second hand and also help with paying for uniform for parents who struggle financially.
Op has bought a £76 pair of (wrong) shoes - this isn’t anything to do with money or the school trying to profit from it as you imply?!
Uniform policies these days are there for a reason.
She has also immediately coughed up for a pair of Air Force 1s - pretty sure there’s a happy medium between these and the heels that op is refusing to look at!

Not refusing to look at. At the point of purchasing we liked them and DD tried them on and once again ...we thought they looked smart. It's only since she's got the full uniform and tried it with her friends that the element of doubt crept in and I consulted with an school working friend as to whether they would be acceptable...etc etc..

I asked the question and since been given a resounding answer.

I STILL stand by the fact that unacceptable in today's secondary school standards they are still smarter than the "go to" for the school my DD is going to .

I work with a lot of schools. Some of which have very relaxed policies and some of which have really strict rules. But I do not know of any school that would allow a heel like that. I don't think it would be comfortable for a year 7 to walk round in all day. Just read the uniform policy on shoes and follow it but if it's unclear just no heels and as a precaution nothing too shiny/ fashion

ScarlettOYara · 30/08/2025 22:51

VenusClapTrap · 30/08/2025 22:43

LOL at someone buying high heels for an 11yo to wear for school

I know, is this serious?!

Bowies · 30/08/2025 22:51

The school often provide details and even photographs of suitable footwear - can u ask?

I can’t imagine these would ever pass for suitable school shoes though, especially the heel.

LurkThenPost · 30/08/2025 22:51

I'm sorry, but those shoes look very dated and the heel is quite big. Very unpractical for school.

DappledThings · 30/08/2025 22:51

There's nothing smart about a child in high heels.

This has made me nostalgic too - pleased to see Kickers are still around! I remember when they were absolutely the only thing to wear in the late nineties (though most of us had knock-offs). I imagine people are right that it will be the heel which is the issue, as it’s pretty substantial. It is funny how certain types of trainers are now an accepted part of school uniform. Must say, it’s a long time since I’ve seen a student in high heels at school.

WhatICallMyUsername · 30/08/2025 22:52

Unfortunately absolutely no one can answer your question as to what’s allowed at your school and you’ll need to check your own policy. Just to give an example, this is ours but some people have said theirs don’t allow trainers. As long as they’re polishable trainers they’re allowed for us

It doesn't matter what you "stand by".
The heels are too high, they're impractical.
Get her proper school shoes.

As a lot of pp have stated many schools will not allow trainers. I have 4 children and none of the different schools that they have attended would allow trainers.
One thing that does make me sad though is everyone mentioning being sent home. I was walking through town one day and there was a young girl in tears, she was telling her friend how she had been sent home and her mum didn’t have the money to buy her new shoes. Honestly, I felt like offering to buy her some school shoes, she was so upset.
Good school shoes are expensive and the cheap ones tend to last weeks not months IME.

JohnofWessex · 30/08/2025 22:53

I suggest that there are some school leadership teams in serious need of detention in a secure hospital.

I suggest that some of the statements about hair are probably open to a legal challenge both on Equalities and Reasonableness grounds

Yes! For years ours have worn plain flat shoes, either loafers, plain lace ups, DMs or Kickers.
I haven't seen heels like that in years, it's not common for girls to wear them.

Homegrownberries · 30/08/2025 22:55

6.5cm heels for school - what were you thinking? They're the same height as these. Would these be suitable?

Since when?
EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 30/08/2025 22:55

Well it’s the heel isn’t it?!!!! Of course that’s not going to adhere to uniform policy.

Agree.

Who even thinks looking 'smart' as an 11 year old girl involves wearing high heels. She's a child!

The issue isn’t how smart those shoes are though (agree they are smarter than Air Force 1s), the issue is that a heel isn’t practical or safe for an 11 year old.

Bless her, I had these pretty much exact same shoes in secondary school 🥰 I think they may object to the heel nowadays as schools have just gone mad. Probably get a pair without a heel?
