Posting here for traffic.

My DD starts year 7 next week. Local secondary. Nothing fancy.

She and we are respectful of uniform policy and have purchased everything we need to. She looks bloody smart and we (and she) can't wait for her to start.

As 11 year old girls will do, they have tried their whole set up in front of their friends and all of them said the same thing:

"You will get sent home with those shoes"

They throw detentions out for the most minor of uniform infractions and DD is now having a massive anxiety spiral that she's going to get a detention or worse sent home 1st day because of her shoes.

I spoke to a friend who works in the school office and showed her a picture and her response was "oooh, I'm not sure. Air Force 1s are the best way to go"

Since when have trainers been a smarter, more acceptable form of shoe than a patent loafer??!!!

For full disclosure she has chosen the Kickers Edie loafer as in the link

https://www.kickers.co.uk/adult-women-edie-loafer-patent-leather-black/14913640.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=UK+-+Kickers+-+Search+-+Brand+-+Core+-+Broad&utm_term=kickers&utm_content=brand+-+Kickers&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=20162340688&gbraid=0AAAAADiNwZXHWpJ1LFmAfTE2drVjkEy8k&gclid=Cj0KCQjwwsrFBhD6ARIsAPnUFD1w_j6Ufhx1cfFv1a1fF0Ageht-fZYRGu_xo9ofOilAOdjE7KgGjEgaAoLrEALw_wcb

This school stipulates that hair past chin lemgth needs to be in a ponytail with a hair band that is the closest colour to the individuals hair colour, yet believes that a trainer is smarter/more acceptable than the loafer.

AIBU here?! I know trainers are more acceptable these days but are they really considered smarter considering how rigid they are on the smaller items?!

I would suggest it’s the heel on the shoe, needs to be more flat. I’ve not read replies so apologise if that’s already been pointed out x

The thread is thirteen pages long! How can you possibly think you might be the first to suggest this?

The second responder said it, and then over 90% of the 325 following posts. The whole thread is about the heels.

Apology not accepted.

It's considered a hazard in schools now. Even teachers aren't allowed high heels 😂

I work in a school and not once have i been told not to wear heels?

ScartlettSole · 31/08/2025 22:44

Isittimeformynapyet · 31/08/2025 22:19

"Ive wore heels since ..'

"Didnt do my learning any harm"

I love the irony 😄

Its Sunday, im tired 🙈 apologies! That has given me a giggle though, blaming the fact i had flat slippers on for that mistake 🤣

madnessitellyou · 30/08/2025 21:44

What does the uniform policy state?

They look too “high heeled” to me. The fact that someone in the office said they weren’t sure would have been enough for me not to buy them.

Same.

Silvertulips · 31/08/2025 23:16

If only school uniform was comfortable rather than ‘smart’

Which teen would prefer smart?

Hoodies and joggers I say - and the less ironing the better.

As it’s 13 pages long I didn’t read it but given the response I have gotten off you I wanted to give a helpful comment and not read and run. Apology wasn’t for you so does not matter if you accept or not, I don’t really understand what you got out of replying to my comment that was not to you. Did you just want to argue on the internet or put someone else down. Anyways thank you for sharing I’m not the only one that wrote about the heel, hopefully others where kind about it too.

Dd's mate was put in isolation for having a red hair elastic not black...
Those shoes aren't suitable for school

Did you really think they were?

That is an absolute disgrace.

cinnamongirl123 · 01/09/2025 00:47

Wow those are some absolutely hideous shoes and I cannot for the life of me understand why you think they would be acceptable as part of a school uniform, or suitable for an 11yo. Sheesh.

andfinallyhereweare · 01/09/2025 01:56

I got in trouble in year 7 in 2000 for flat patent shoes…

AJLOAL · 01/09/2025 03:41

Overthebow · 30/08/2025 21:43

Surely it’s the heel on those shoes that is the problem, not that they’re loafers? They’re not really suitable for school in year 7.

Absolutely this. The heels are way too high.

Not a chance they’d be allowed in Dds school - flat black shoes only - no trainers, nothing that looks like a trainer - shoes only

VerbenaGirl · 01/09/2025 09:42

Those have got quite a heel on them and that would be a deal breaker at my DDs school and not allowed. So would the others you mention too though.

Thank you all for your (brutally) honest feedback!

Do love AIBU sometimes. God forbid someone posts and actually agrees with the vast majority (in terms of a acceptability).

Night all!

Edited

To be fair, it did take you a while 😉 and I suspect you still don’t agree deep down...

We're usually told heels or backless shoes at the wearer's risk.

ScarlettOYara · 01/09/2025 11:15

@Bedtimeread have you come across "cancel the cheque" on MN? That poster was just pointing out that this has been quite a long thread thus far.
Your post comes into that category! 😁

clary · 01/09/2025 13:35

BambinaCucina · 01/09/2025 00:36

That is an absolute disgrace.

Probably not the full story tho tbh

GentleJadeOP · 01/09/2025 15:46

It’s not about how smart they are. Yes they are smart. But black trainers are safer as kids push and shove on stairs etc and run around. (Can you not see that black stilettos for example would be smart but not safe? )The shoes you bought are nice but just not practical and the school have to keep you children as safe as possible.

DashboardConfession · 01/09/2025 15:51

Regardless of the heel "polishable" means no patent!

Skybluepinky · 01/09/2025 16:21

No idea why you bought them, really not school shoes, did you not look at the soles send them back and get suitable ones.

ScartlettSole · 01/09/2025 16:35

ScarlettOYara · 01/09/2025 11:11

We're usually told heels or backless shoes at the wearer's risk.

Thats fair i suppose!

NewGoldFox · 01/09/2025 17:09

Those are pretty close to what I wore at that age but times have changed 😆
I think as others have said it is the heel that will be the issue. Best to return them now and purchase something more suitable.

LevelledPeach · 01/09/2025 17:11

Nah, they wouldn't meet uniform policy in either of my kids schools, or any of the 5 I've taught in.

It's a completely weird obsession schools have with children's clothes, I'll never understand it.

InOverMyHead84 · 01/09/2025 17:14

Loafers are fine, heels like that are not. Flats all the way.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 01/09/2025 17:37

I bloody love those shoes and want some myself.

allmymonkeys · 01/09/2025 18:16

Don't know any uniform policy that allows patent leather. Hugs to your daughter, but get her something safer and remind her uniform is supposed to be lacking in any interest or individuality, sigh...
