Posting here for traffic.

My DD starts year 7 next week. Local secondary. Nothing fancy.

She and we are respectful of uniform policy and have purchased everything we need to. She looks bloody smart and we (and she) can't wait for her to start.

As 11 year old girls will do, they have tried their whole set up in front of their friends and all of them said the same thing:

"You will get sent home with those shoes"

They throw detentions out for the most minor of uniform infractions and DD is now having a massive anxiety spiral that she's going to get a detention or worse sent home 1st day because of her shoes.

I spoke to a friend who works in the school office and showed her a picture and her response was "oooh, I'm not sure. Air Force 1s are the best way to go"

Since when have trainers been a smarter, more acceptable form of shoe than a patent loafer??!!!

For full disclosure she has chosen the Kickers Edie loafer as in the link

https://www.kickers.co.uk/adult-women-edie-loafer-patent-leather-black/14913640.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=UK+-+Kickers+-+Search+-+Brand+-+Core+-+Broad&utm_term=kickers&utm_content=brand+-+Kickers&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=20162340688&gbraid=0AAAAADiNwZXHWpJ1LFmAfTE2drVjkEy8k&gclid=Cj0KCQjwwsrFBhD6ARIsAPnUFD1w_j6Ufhx1cfFv1a1fF0Ageht-fZYRGu_xo9ofOilAOdjE7KgGjEgaAoLrEALw_wcb

This school stipulates that hair past chin lemgth needs to be in a ponytail with a hair band that is the closest colour to the individuals hair colour, yet believes that a trainer is smarter/more acceptable than the loafer.

AIBU here?! I know trainers are more acceptable these days but are they really considered smarter considering how rigid they are on the smaller items?!

Bless her, I had these pretty much exact same shoes in secondary school 🥰 I think they may object to the heel nowadays as schools have just gone mad. Probably get a pair without a heel?

Why is it ‘mad’ to not want 11 year olds wearing heels?

McSteamyorMcdreamy · 30/08/2025 22:39

Literally states in policy that THEY will decide which boys hair cuts are acceptable.

Almost smacks of well if a straight 9/A* student comes into school with a no 1 they will be sent home.

I don't get it.

Don’t you? Really?

No high heels? No brightly coloured hair ties/scrunchies? No shaved heads, but we’ll take that on a case by case basis. No hoop earrings, no nail varnish. It’s basic basic stuff, that kids and parents should be able to grasp.

Do you honestly not get it? The school want pupils to be as uniform as possible, to be as conservative as possible. They don’t want it to be a fashion show. They don’t want Kelsey coming in in two inch rubber, clomping heels. They don’t want Riley coming in with a shaved head and looking like a thug.

These rules were around in the 90s, it’s nothing new.

Comeonbabyblue · 30/08/2025 23:02

Not a chance they'd pass in my sons school but neither would any sort of trainers.
On the website they have the uniform allowed and are only allowed certain kickers shoes maybe 3/4 both boys and girls and they're named so no other kickers or shoes with a heel are allowed, I wouldn't let me kid wear them anyway because they are not school shoes but surely there's information on the uniform policy

LegleEagle · 30/08/2025 23:04

Why does it have to be ridiculously high kickers or trainers? If you prefer the loafer style, why not go for one with an appropriate heel rather than shoes you obviously hate?

Something like this?

That’s a ridiculous school shoe.

YippieKayakOtherBuckets · 30/08/2025 23:05

This can’t be genuine. High heels for an 11 year old?

SunnyViper · 30/08/2025 23:06

Trainers were not permitted at any of the schools I worked at.

Bobbie12345678 · 30/08/2025 23:07

Of course they are high heels. It sounds like you are trying to compare apples and oranges. Yes they are ‘smarter’… but that isn’t the point, they are HEELS which you said are not allowed.
Why on earth would you want your eleven year old strutting around in heels? You know one of the big reason they appeal for women is the whole posture/ look, right? They make your legs look longer, they make your chest thrust forwards a bit more, your bum out a bit. Heels sexualise us. Not what I would want for my 11 year old. Let alone caring for her back and allowing her to run.

McSteamyorMcdreamy · 30/08/2025 23:07

HatandCoat · 30/08/2025 22:55

Agree.

Who even thinks looking 'smart' as an 11 year old girl involves wearing high heels. She's a child!

Really?? She's a child?!

I am hardly sending her into a brothel wearing a Louboutin!

We purchased a shoe that is advertised as a school shoe?

This - school shoes have to be black and flat.

You think advertising equals fact?

InfoSecInTheCity · 30/08/2025 23:09

In the secondary DD has started this year they have relented and allowed plain black trainer style, no coloured stitching, no canvas style but solid black trainers. They did it as a compromise with the school council which is made up of reps from each school year. The school gave them trainers, the council agreed to strengthenig the uniform policy on type of skirts and trousers that are allowed.

Kids get comfier shoes, adults get to attend work without seeing the kids butt cheeks jiggling up the stairs.

Was the ‘adult women’ part of the description not a teeny tiny clue, OP?

Because there are standards of uniform and you need to obey them.

Why when the standards are completely stupid? And as above what happens if the parents are working?

Once again I would also like to say that I have taken everyone's comments on board and thanked them and she won't be wearing them! Why can't people read all the posts?

Yes, they are not allowed a no 1 or skin fades at my DC’s school.

Best to buy two

AF1s aren’t allowed in most schools. The most
popular in my school are ones like these: https://www.schuh.co.uk/womens/converse-all-star-mono-ox-black-trainers/1922867020/

Topseyt123 · 30/08/2025 23:12

Bloody hell, those are dreadful. Very high heels and totally unsuitable for school. She needs flat loafers, or just a very low, subtle heel.

I can't believe that anyone could consider those suitable school shoes and let the child choose them.

People are still responding because you seem to think the school’s rules are wrong - when to pretty much everyone else it is obvious that you can’t send a child to school in high heels.

I'm a teacher OP, I think the heel would be an issue, but I'm 100% with you that f**ing plastic trainers are at best the shoe satan wears, and have no place in a school, horrid manky things!

MayWelland · 30/08/2025 23:13

I’m struggling to see how you ever thought the Kickers would be acceptabe, especially if you’d read the uniform policy in advance as you say. It literally says ‘no heels’ and this is a 6.5cm heel.

I also think you are making a false equivalence on the ‘smart’ thing. No one is saying that the AF1s are smarter than the heels, they are saying that on the sliding scale of suitability, the AF1s are closer to acceptable than the Kickers.

(though like others have said, I’m nostalgic for the kickers! We were never allowed any and had to have the knock-offs. An injustice I’ve never really gotten over)

I think people are just shocked that you thought they would be appropriate. They’re not borderline, they are wholly unsuitable for school.
