Posting here for traffic.

My DD starts year 7 next week. Local secondary. Nothing fancy.

She and we are respectful of uniform policy and have purchased everything we need to. She looks bloody smart and we (and she) can't wait for her to start.

As 11 year old girls will do, they have tried their whole set up in front of their friends and all of them said the same thing:

"You will get sent home with those shoes"

They throw detentions out for the most minor of uniform infractions and DD is now having a massive anxiety spiral that she's going to get a detention or worse sent home 1st day because of her shoes.

I spoke to a friend who works in the school office and showed her a picture and her response was "oooh, I'm not sure. Air Force 1s are the best way to go"

Since when have trainers been a smarter, more acceptable form of shoe than a patent loafer??!!!

For full disclosure she has chosen the Kickers Edie loafer as in the link

https://www.kickers.co.uk/adult-women-edie-loafer-patent-leather-black/14913640.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=UK+-+Kickers+-+Search+-+Brand+-+Core+-+Broad&utm_term=kickers&utm_content=brand+-+Kickers&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=20162340688&gbraid=0AAAAADiNwZXHWpJ1LFmAfTE2drVjkEy8k&gclid=Cj0KCQjwwsrFBhD6ARIsAPnUFD1w_j6Ufhx1cfFv1a1fF0Ageht-fZYRGu_xo9ofOilAOdjE7KgGjEgaAoLrEALw_wcb

This school stipulates that hair past chin lemgth needs to be in a ponytail with a hair band that is the closest colour to the individuals hair colour, yet believes that a trainer is smarter/more acceptable than the loafer.

AIBU here?! I know trainers are more acceptable these days but are they really considered smarter considering how rigid they are on the smaller items?!

Policy says no heels or stiletto. I clearly have a different definition of heels and maybe I was being massively nostalgic when she chose them in the shop

Thankyou for your feedback DH is ordering AF1s as we speak and she can follow the herd as every alternate (less heel) I have showed her has been a no.

I just hate that trainers are more acceptable!!

I wouldn’t class them as a heel either op 😆. May get myself a pair.

ScartlettSole · 31/08/2025 18:33

Im sorry but this whole thread is insane to me!

I went to a very "posh" private school and theyre uniform requirements werent as mad as some of these. I currently work in a school and while there is a uniform, children arent punished for not wearing it. Its basically dark bottoms, white polo, blue jumper/cardi.

Is this English thing? Have they nothing better to do than police shoes and hair bobbles?!?

If 2.5in aren’t heels, what is?

Discodance1988 · 31/08/2025 18:35

Would be perfectly fine at my eldest DC school but then the school (mainstream) doesn't have a uniform at all but I appreciate that 99% of schools snuff out any individuality and force the children to look identical. My DC school even allow them to dye their hair crazy colours, wear make up and have whatever hair style they desire. Best secondary school by miles.

They are absolutely not high heels and it is an insult thst people are referring to them as high heels 😅

When i started first year, i had 4inch court shoes. They were high heels 🤣🤣

2.5 are mid. High is 4 and above.

YABU for posting such a vague title with no indication of what you are asking about. Why do people do this?

Oh @McSteamyorMcdreamy you are in for a world of pain if you try to apply any common sense where English secondary school uniform policy is concerned.

Teachers are absolutely out of control and on a massive power trip on this. It’s actually quite frightening. No, sick and weird. Very dark.

The children are bullied, controlled and demeaned and every bit of individuality is stamped out of them.

Good luck. Your choices are to submit utterly or accept nonstop detentions and “negatives”. Or emigrate to a country where they haven’t utterly lost their minds and actually focus on the things that matter. Ie. the learning and developing bit…

You do also know, don’t you, that your daughter most likely won’t be allowed to go to the toilet during lessons even if she’s on her period and needs to change her pad. And they may ring you at home demanding an explanation if she has a viral illness lasting more than three days. Etc. etc. Mad and so stupid.

errrm?

A power trip? I don’t think so. I was a secondary teacher and uniform regs were a bane of my life. No pleasure in it for me I promise you.

I did mildly query a student in my form whose stretchy skirt-belt was so short it showed the top bit of her tights. I don't really think a school is the place for that kind of individuality.

I also recall asking a student about his grey and white trainers – were they his school shoes (bc sometimes kids' shoes would eg get wet and they would have to come in in home trainers for a day). Yes he said. Hmm they are supposed to be all black. Oh he said, well when everyone at school is wearing black shoes then I will [obvs what he had been told at home]. I then realised that I no longer taught him and he was not in my form, and decided it was not my circus. Ppwer trip? Nope.

Children in my school (and my own DC) were not bullied or demeaned by teachers. I’m sorry that your experience has been different.

And for those posts saying that their DC or a DC they know has been put into exclusion for wearing the wrong colour hair bobble, I highly doubt this. Much more likely it's for the response from them when the bobble was pointed out.

pollymere · 31/08/2025 18:56

Okay...

  1. They are Kickers which are banned in schools.
  2. They have a ridiculous heel on them.
  3. They are a fashion style.
  4. Some schools don't allow patent leather (exceptions are made for less than 25% of the shoe such as the toe).
  5. Your child's feet are still growing. Unless you want them to have deformed or hammer toes, they need shoes with laces or some form of strap.

Your child will be one of those children being asked to wait in the Hall. Or in some schools made to wear borrowed plimsolls for lessons. Please don't be that parent.

Clarks/Startrite/Shoezone/Next and just buy plain black shoes with a fastening. Yes, they can wear slip on styles but you'll ruin their feet and they can fall off when trying to get to lessons. Clarks do some chunkier styles with a t-bar if that's the look you want.

I fear your friend was playing the fool. I have NEVER known a school allow AF1. Indeed, I've had to send students to Isolation for wearing them. Schools usually expect smart, plain black shoes in leather or leather appearance.

pollymere · 31/08/2025 18:58

ScartlettSole · 31/08/2025 18:37

2.5 are mid. High is 4 and above.

For school shoes, you shouldn't have anything higher than 1.5in.

And actually, when I worked in shoe retail, high was 3in and above.

Ohdearanotherone · 31/08/2025 19:03

It’s the heels. Have to be flat shoes. Saying that my kids school doesn’t allow trainer or trainer style shoes either.

Ladygardenerinderby · 31/08/2025 19:03

Wow they’re high heeled ! Think that’s what’s going to cause issues not the style of the shoes just the height of the heels

ladyrushford · 31/08/2025 19:05

My daughter also starts secondary school next week. The rules for shoes were: no heels, no patent leather, so slip ons, no logos or bows or buckles. We tried every shop but eventually found something in Next, which my daughter isn’t that keen on, but it was good enough.

I wouldn’t buy trainers for the school uniform but I’d buy a flatter heeled shoe myself.

ScartlettSole · 31/08/2025 19:15

Above 3 used to be high but not anymore as heels got higher.

Ive wore heels since i was in high school, still do everyday. I had high heels in high school. I could walk fine in them, cannot understand the issue at all. Didnt do my learning any harm at all!

Sunnyscribe · 31/08/2025 19:28

Zippidydoodah · 30/08/2025 21:46

Too high but we all had those exact ones in the nineties!

I wore those shoes in primary school, I remember them because I loved them so much.

cocoromo · 31/08/2025 19:56

Those wouldn’t fly at my kids secondary. Too high and branded (with the silver bar). It’s not about them being more or less smart than trainers it’s about them not being on line with the policy.

Toptops · 31/08/2025 19:57

SeptaUnellasBell · 30/08/2025 22:23

Most people wore shoes like that at school in the 90s and I don’t remember everyone dying from academic failure however, schools today like to execute power like Henry the 8th for no other reason than that they can. So, yeah, she’s probably gonna have an issue at school.

What a silly thing to say!
Schools are now having to do so much more than they used to - pastoral, feeding kids and changing nappies, supporting parents in many ways.
They don't need arsey comments about being autocratic, by simply hoping parents will stick to their uniform rules.

StopRainingNow · 31/08/2025 20:18

ScarlettOYara · 31/08/2025 09:17

Flat, comfortable, practical shoes eg black trainers are not a "batshit" rule.
High heeled platforms for an 11 year old is more batshit, imo.

I never said otherwise. I just think OP is in for a shock if she thinks this sensible show rule is crazy, because there are some really bat shit ones to come....

Ireallycantthinkofagoodone · 31/08/2025 20:26

@McSteamyorMcdreamy The shoes clearly state ‘adult women Edie loafer…..’ The HEELED loafer…..
Your DD’s school said ‘no heels’

I can’t see that it states anywhere on the listing that it’s a school shoe. Totally unsuitable for an 11 year old child.

pepperminticecream · 31/08/2025 20:31

McSteamyorMcdreamy · 30/08/2025 22:34

The looks the looks...... I have literally just said I care about whether she is "smart".

If I wanted her to "look" fashionable I would have already purchased the £120 trainers.

Jesus Christ!

Those aren’t “smart” shoes though. They look cheap and aren’t acceptable for a child (which your child is). I can’t imagine ever thinking those are smart or look good on a child.

It's considered a hazard in schools now. Even teachers aren't allowed high heels 😂

Bedtimeread · 31/08/2025 20:42

I would suggest it’s the heel on the shoe, needs to be more flat. I’ve not read replies so apologise if that’s already been pointed out x

sgtmajormum · 31/08/2025 21:43

With those heels - absolutely she will be sent home on day one!
You need flat shoes OP
Swap them asap

I love the irony 😄

They are way too high for school
