Posting here for traffic.

My DD starts year 7 next week. Local secondary. Nothing fancy.

She and we are respectful of uniform policy and have purchased everything we need to. She looks bloody smart and we (and she) can't wait for her to start.

As 11 year old girls will do, they have tried their whole set up in front of their friends and all of them said the same thing:

"You will get sent home with those shoes"

They throw detentions out for the most minor of uniform infractions and DD is now having a massive anxiety spiral that she's going to get a detention or worse sent home 1st day because of her shoes.

I spoke to a friend who works in the school office and showed her a picture and her response was "oooh, I'm not sure. Air Force 1s are the best way to go"

Since when have trainers been a smarter, more acceptable form of shoe than a patent loafer??!!!

For full disclosure she has chosen the Kickers Edie loafer as in the link

https://www.kickers.co.uk/adult-women-edie-loafer-patent-leather-black/14913640.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=UK+-+Kickers+-+Search+-+Brand+-+Core+-+Broad&utm_term=kickers&utm_content=brand+-+Kickers&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=20162340688&gbraid=0AAAAADiNwZXHWpJ1LFmAfTE2drVjkEy8k&gclid=Cj0KCQjwwsrFBhD6ARIsAPnUFD1w_j6Ufhx1cfFv1a1fF0Ageht-fZYRGu_xo9ofOilAOdjE7KgGjEgaAoLrEALw_wcb

This school stipulates that hair past chin lemgth needs to be in a ponytail with a hair band that is the closest colour to the individuals hair colour, yet believes that a trainer is smarter/more acceptable than the loafer.

AIBU here?! I know trainers are more acceptable these days but are they really considered smarter considering how rigid they are on the smaller items?!

If this is your first child at secondary school then you need to prepare yourself for many years of bats hit crazy rules, especially about uniforms, that make zero sense and have zero impact on actual learning, but are held in more esteem than actually being in school willing and ready to learn. My DS got put in isolation for having the wrong coloured socks on!!

But either way, those are high heeled shoes!

Flat, comfortable, practical shoes eg black trainers are not a "batshit" rule.
High heeled platforms for an 11 year old is more batshit, imo.

Clearinguptheclutter · 31/08/2025 09:21

Your school sounds like ours. You’re not unreasonable to think they would be fine but they won’t be.

Pieandchips999 · 30/08/2025 22:50

I work with a lot of schools. Some of which have very relaxed policies and some of which have really strict rules. But I do not know of any school that would allow a heel like that. I don't think it would be comfortable for a year 7 to walk round in all day. Just read the uniform policy on shoes and follow it but if it's unclear just no heels and as a precaution nothing too shiny/ fashion

Me too, worked in schools and DS is in his 20's now and even when I was at school and the uniform was super relaxed NONE of the schools would have allowed those shoes.

BeRoseSloth · 31/08/2025 09:24

Ours didn’t allow patent leather.

borntobequiet · 31/08/2025 09:29

YABU and silly. Those shoes have heels.

Also, there’s nothing wrong with well designed and well-fitting trainers.

8misskitty8 · 31/08/2025 09:34

Those are heels ! Much higher than anything I could walk in.

When my girls were at secondary they had uniform checks and if the school tie could not be seen if they had a jumper on in the winter we got a text home.

However it was fine for girls to wear skirts so short you could see their bum cheeks through the see through tights.
Leggings were banned though even though they covered more.
Full make up with eyelash extensions and false nails were also allowed.
But a tie under a jumper was a big deal, it was madness.

Pickledpoppetpickle · 31/08/2025 09:35

Overthebow · 30/08/2025 21:43

Surely it’s the heel on those shoes that is the problem, not that they’re loafers? They’re not really suitable for school in year 7.

This. I h e worked in a number of schools - this wouldn’t have been allowed in any of them.

Nannyfannybanny · 31/08/2025 09:35

My DKs or dgks schools wouldn't allow patent or that heel either..I can't get over the prices shown for these shoes..

Badgerandfox227 · 31/08/2025 09:39

I put YABU based on the size of the heel, whether it’s uniform policy or not, an 11 year old damaging her feet wearing heels all day is ridiculous.

YippieKayakOtherBuckets · 31/08/2025 09:40

I am still convinced that the OP had had a wine last night and was on a wind-up but it’s a worry that there appear to be genuine parents on this thread who don’t know that high heels are unsuitable school shoes for 11-year-old children 🤯.

VIOLETPUGH · 31/08/2025 09:40

Clearly NOT school shoes, even without reading the policy, since when have heels been part of a school uniform !

DappledThings · 31/08/2025 09:42

And some even claiming those aren't high heels!

BilbaoBaggage · 31/08/2025 10:02

Is it just me that thinks, regardless of suitability for school or otherwise, that is one of the ugliest looking pairs of shoes I have seen in a very long time?

IkeaJesusChrist · 31/08/2025 10:02

I can't believe you thought those shoes would be acceptable however at the same time I can't believe that the school allows trainers and very expensive ones at that.

Sunshineandoranges · 31/08/2025 10:03

Are patent shoes allowed?

Bluesey · 31/08/2025 10:04

HonestOpalHelper · 30/08/2025 23:13

I'm a teacher OP, I think the heel would be an issue, but I'm 100% with you that f**ing plastic trainers are at best the shoe satan wears, and have no place in a school, horrid manky things!

Airforce 1's are leather according to the JD website, I guess that's why they're allowed.
I'm surprised you thought those huge heels would be allowed - what did you think a heel was if it wasn't that OP?

user9064385631 · 31/08/2025 10:05

Do you really want growing feet to be in heels for 7 or 8 hours a day? I’d do her back and feet a favour and buy the black trainer type of shoes.

Our school is black polishable shoes, those would be spotted in minutes. Don’t make her first few days at a new school more stressful than it needs to be.

Eliza342 · 31/08/2025 10:06

Those shoes aren’t suitable for an 11 year old to wear to school due to the high heels

Fruitsherbert · 31/08/2025 10:09

I'm also surprised at the shoes that do seem to be allowed on that picture. The dc go to a fairly mediocre school, but nothing remotely trainer like is allowed.

OneNewLeader · 31/08/2025 10:24

High heeled shoes, not a hill to die on.

KellySeveride · 31/08/2025 10:30

OP have you even checked the school shoe policy because a lot won’t allow AF1’s either.

I do agree with the people who said I’m not sure why if you knew it said no heels that you thought the kickers would be acceptable?

FWIW this is my kids school shoe policy-heels up to an inch allowed but definitely no trainers.

Since when?
mondaytosunday · 31/08/2025 10:40

Those (nor trainers) would not be allowed at my DD’s old school. Far too much heel. Shoes had to be flat or low heel, minimal decoration (no bows or tassels or what have you) and definitely NOT patent leather.

EnjoyingTheArmoire · 31/08/2025 10:44

I really hope the OP will come back and explain why she didn't think the shoes that she bought classed as "high heels"

PorcelainBlueCorydalis · 31/08/2025 10:45

McSteamyorMcdreamy · 30/08/2025 21:59

Policy says no heels or stiletto. I clearly have a different definition of heels and maybe I was being massively nostalgic when she chose them in the shop

Thankyou for your feedback DH is ordering AF1s as we speak and she can follow the herd as every alternate (less heel) I have showed her has been a no.

I just hate that trainers are more acceptable!!

just hate that trainers are more acceptable!!

Than heels? Comfortable shoes v heels?

Not even high heels, she didn't consider that they were heels. I really want to know what the OPs definition of heels is.
