havent got a car yet, my dp is taking lessons and will be getting a car when he passes but people who say they cant live without there car are surely stupid ?
havent they heard of the bus or tram etc ?
i have two kids and one on the way and i will still use public transport when we have a car!
plus i walk 25 mins to school and 25 mins back twice a day i just think people who rely on there car for everything are just plain lazy,
i agree it is nice to have a car but its not everything!
sorry if you feel diffrent but thats how i feel!

I think able-bodied people who live close(ish) to a town can cope. (but aren't stupid for saying they couldn't)

However, disabled people or people in rural areas probably couldn't survive without they're car.

I'm gonna keep an eye on this thread as I think it's gonna be a hard hat affair.

Kindersurprise · 31/05/2008 00:46

I am without a car at the moment as mine has just failed it's MOT.

Yes, I can do without it, but it is a pain when doing shopping. I bought a granny trolley (called Heel Porsche here in Germany ) so that I don't have to carry everything home.

We live in a village with good train connection to the large town nearby but eg. getting my DD to her art class is a pain as it is in the next village. We bike to kindergarten but that is only ok in dry weather.

I am managing ok without a car, I don't mind walking or biking around the village, but it is more time consuming. It takes me 20 mins to get to kindergarten compared to 3 mins in the car.

unknownrebelbang · 31/05/2008 00:48

Depends on individual circumstances, doesn't it?

If I didn't work, I could manage without a car - it would take me almost an hour to walk to school in the morning.

In the afternoons, I guess I could hang around school for an hour with DS2 whilst DS3 does his after-school club, or vice versa depending on which evening it is - or they could do without.

Would struggle to fit in my 25 hrs pw job though - depending on times, it's one or two buses each way, and probably an hour's journey each way.

And DH would struggle to get to/from his job 10 miles away at various times of the day / night, including 7 am, midnight, 3 am, etc etc.

cazboldy · 31/05/2008 00:50

YABU

totally!

you obviously don't live in the middle of nowhere!

A bus comes through this village 2x a week.....that's a help then!

I have a 20 min drive to school

we live nearly 8 miles from the nearest shops

I don't want to be rude, but I wonder who is being stupid!

or a troll ?

1dilemma · 31/05/2008 00:50

Heel Porsche
how did the Germans get their reputation for having little sense of humour..

IMHO it all depends where you live London like us our car is frequently parked for weeks rural Cornwall/Scotland etc you'd be having a laugh.

Personally I think many more people in London should strongly be discouraged from driving, I'm loving this half-term no Chelsea tractors on school run stuff.

My trip to work is taking half as long

KatyMac · 31/05/2008 00:50

6.6 miles to school
9.7 miles to a shop
3.5 miles to the Doctors

I think I'd struggle with out a car - I don't have space for a horse

AbstractMouse · 31/05/2008 00:52

Yes

I imagine you could be much more productive in life if you didn't have to wait for goddamn fecking shitey buses. I would love to drive but just can't afford the lessons or the car. I watch them cruising away with their fingers up their noses wishing a pox on their family whilst I wait another 10 minutes for the bus that was due an hour ago mwahahah

hana · 31/05/2008 00:53

their car

sorry

lins1uk · 31/05/2008 00:53

didnt mean disabled people who of course need there cars and the elderly but people who are able,
im not being nasty or anything but feel that sometimes it doesnt hurt to walk!
my mum for instance when her car breaks down its like the end of the world!
complaining that shes so tired from all the walking or using public transport which is what i do and loads of other people everyday how hard can it be!

OP posts:
cazboldy · 31/05/2008 00:55

but what about people like myself and Katymac?

unknownrebelbang · 31/05/2008 00:55

I'm able, and I do walk.

I'm not stupid.

But I'd still struggle without my car.

lins1uk · 31/05/2008 00:56

yes if you live in the middle of nowhere than you need a car but i live in the city and hear people who live 5 mins away from school complaning that they wouldnt be able to cope without there car and to me that is really stupid!

OP posts:
BEAUTlFUL · 31/05/2008 00:59

I used to think like you. Then I got a car.

BEAUTlFUL · 31/05/2008 01:00

No - "there car" is really stupid.

hana · 31/05/2008 01:01

I am far from stupid and wouldn't be without a car for lots of reasons. its not the be all and end all of saving the planet

expatinscotland · 31/05/2008 01:02

YABU.

Ever tried living in a rural area with no public transport?

And not just live there, but get a job to pay the bills?

The surgery is 4 miles away on a narrow, winding road that has no pavements for much of it, and ditches and culverts on the sides.

The shop is a further half mile from there.

The school is 3 miles each way and there's a bitch of a steep hill to get to it.

And now the bastard Forestry Commission wants to use the route for up to 40 44+tonne logging lorries.

I wouldn't presume to say all townies are stupid and lazy because they live in towns, so it's really insulting and ignorant to assume anyone who lives outside a town and needs a car to get round is.

lins1uk · 31/05/2008 01:03

saving the planet isnt on my list of things to do tbh,
i just feel people shouldnt rely on them,

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 31/05/2008 01:04

Oh, okay, so people shouldn't rely on them for things like, oh, making a living, getting their children to a surgery, picking up a pint of milk and such trivialities like that?

hana · 31/05/2008 01:04

silly argument I think

lins1uk · 31/05/2008 01:06

i rely on my legs and public transport a lot of people do, god forbid if your car broke down and you had to catch the bus!

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 31/05/2008 01:06

yeah, especially because there's no bus out here!

get real.

1dilemma · 31/05/2008 01:07

'saving the planet isn't on my list of things to do tbh'

try explaining that to your children

expatinscotland · 31/05/2008 01:07

yes, hana, i agree! trying to teach a dog to read is silly, too .

LuckySalem · 31/05/2008 01:08

I use both but I still think I wouldn't be able to cope without a car. Buses aren't regular. If I didn't have a car and there was an emergency I think i'd be stuck as you can't always get a taxi. (i don't mean 999 emergency)

Don't really appreciate being called stupid.

hana · 31/05/2008 01:08

expat - I think we both need to get to bed

gnight
