havent got a car yet, my dp is taking lessons and will be getting a car when he passes but people who say they cant live without there car are surely stupid ?
havent they heard of the bus or tram etc ?
i have two kids and one on the way and i will still use public transport when we have a car!
plus i walk 25 mins to school and 25 mins back twice a day i just think people who rely on there car for everything are just plain lazy,
i agree it is nice to have a car but its not everything!
sorry if you feel diffrent but thats how i feel!

Personally, i could cope without my car. I only learnt to drive 3years ago, mainly pushed bh the fact my hsuabnd was a long term patient in a hospital 30miles away.

Dh however, needs a car to get about. He is now walking further distances (has just taken the dd's for a walk to the shops), but even 6months ago he found that very hard going. He is getting fitter, but he still needs a car to get to his hospital appointments 30miles away.

My hospital appointments are ok to get to via train and bus, or for the one in two weeks, is in central london, so am getting the train/tube. I live 5mins walk from town and rail. bus stop is 2mins round the corner.

FFS Rosmaryconnely4breakfast, don't be such a whinging lightweight! Is it too much to expect you to grow your own food while training to be your own GP and pharmacist?!

FFS, some people just want it all on a plate, don't they?

"Im fed up of traipsing all around birmingham on stinky, unreliable public transport. im bored of standing around waiting for buses."

I have already written in support of the people who need cars for reasons of work or lack of facilities where they live and I stand by that. But it doesn't totally cheer me up to know that dd's asthma is worsened by people who are just bored of waiting for buses. Boredom doesn't seem to me that important in the grand scheme of things.

bellavita · 31/05/2008 13:50

I could not do without my car. We live in a village.

What happens when the DC's need to go to the Dr's - or in DS1's case last week hospital because of an injury at school?

I am not stupid.

tiredemma · 31/05/2008 13:52

Sorry Cory- Im confused- can you explain why me being bored of waiting for a bus offends you?

"Sorry Cory- Im confused- can you explain why me being bored of waiting for a bus offends you?"

Because traffic pollution exacerbates dd's asthma. If people only drove when they needed to, it would be possible to keep pollution levels down= her health would improve. Your standing around looking bored at the bus stop would not offend me at all- it's when people choose to travel by car for frivolous reasons.

lardylumps · 31/05/2008 14:00

Stupid post. I can not believe that anyone would be so ignorant. You may live in a area with good public transport routs but most of the country doesn't, public transport is not an option for a lot of people.

tiredemma · 31/05/2008 14:02

Thanks for explaining.

lardylumps · 31/05/2008 14:02

Routes

cory · 31/05/2008 14:04

Are you referring to my post or the OP, lardy? If to mine, please note that I have said repeatedly that I think lots of people do need cars and should not be flamed for it.

lardylumps · 31/05/2008 14:07

No sorry Cory I mean the OP.

tiredemma · 31/05/2008 14:10

Sorry Cory- perhaps 'bored' is a silly term. However I must admit that I am narked at having to rely on a shit public transport system to do a 20 mile around trip each day.

For me to make that journey car would not be 'frivolous'- what I do is a necessity and to not have to do it by bus would make life a lot easier for not only myself, but also my kids. Primarily so as they would not have to leave the house an hour earlier than normal for school so I can get across town in time.

PeachyWontLieToYou · 31/05/2008 14:18

Dh would lose hos job if we didnt have a car, there is no bus etc to where he works.

so we could live wiyhout it.

on benefits

cory · 31/05/2008 14:31

Well, that's fair enough, Tiredemma; you can go in my 'not frivolous' box

Alambil · 31/05/2008 14:48

There are plenty of reasons that people need their cars, most of which stem from the fact that they're living in an area that has either poor or no public transport links.

Hope that short lesson helps.

I live in a town where buses decide whether or not to turn up on their round on a whim. Before now I've been at the bus stop for 90 minutes waiting. I could have got to university and back in that time!

I have a car. I need a car. I won't give my car up and I'm not stupid, thanks all the same

hercules1 · 31/05/2008 15:11

People who use buses smell. That's why I drive.

Poohbah · 31/05/2008 15:12

Okay, what would you do if you lived 3 miles from the nearest post office, up a steep 1:16 gradient hill, a treacherous road with 60 mile an hour speed limit and no pavements, frequented by motorbikers and boy racers, 6 miles from the nearest basic supermarkets, basic shops, bank, cashpoint, 25 miles from the nearest big name supermarket, hospital, 20 miles from a NHS dentist, 6 miles in opposite direction to Doctors, I could go on.

No public transport at all for 6 miles and a unsafe road so biking with a child would be really dangerous! Would you do it??? You wouldn't get anywhere on time ever or safely!

We luckily work from home so don't travel for work but I think your statement is extremely narrow minded indeed.

We live in a hamlet, population approx 200. The nearest bus, which runs once an hour at peak times and never on the weekends, is 30 minutes walk from us. Granted, living in such isolation is relatively rare but don't tell me I'm stupid if I say I can't "live" without my car
