havent got a car yet, my dp is taking lessons and will be getting a car when he passes but people who say they cant live without there car are surely stupid ?
havent they heard of the bus or tram etc ?
i have two kids and one on the way and i will still use public transport when we have a car!
plus i walk 25 mins to school and 25 mins back twice a day i just think people who rely on there car for everything are just plain lazy,
i agree it is nice to have a car but its not everything!
sorry if you feel diffrent but thats how i feel!

riven I have to say I really admire you. I would no more dream of taking dd on a bus than flying to the moon(bloody death traps for wheelchairs imo) and as for pushing her in her wheelchair(she sits in a heavy caps seat as well) up and down the hills of brighton, dodging the cars, bikes and dog pooh on the pavements.......no way.
but dh cycles to work so he does our bit.

I have a car. It's cheaper for me to drive into town and pay for parking then to get a bus there and back.

Parking here is cheap. It's £1 for three hours. Mind you, where I used to live, you'd be paying over a fiver for three hours in town.

Acinonyx · 04/06/2008 13:52

Dh and I both cycle to work - but we're about to move and will have to park and cycle. We can't afford to live any closer, and we are moving further away to get to a reasonable school district (yeah I know - cry me a river ). I am very sorry that we will be commuting and did look into a compromise solution but housing in town is just too expensive.

Meeely2 · 04/06/2008 14:02

i live 10 miles from work - yes i could cycle that - however, work does not have showers so I would pong all day, plus I have 2 kids to get to nursery which is right next to work - don't fancy cycling towing them two....

KaSo · 04/06/2008 14:11

No, you're the stupid one. Or perhaps I could be less rude than you and say lacking in imagination, empathy or any forsesight?

We live in a rural area. We have a mortgage that depends on Dh's earnings.

Dh's work is 7 miles away. His shifts are 9-3pm and then back again to do 5:30-11:30pm
This is Wed-Fri

On Sat he does 6:30am-3pm and 5:30pm- Midnight and Sunday he does 5:30am- 4:30pm

So...........OP, I'm simply DYING to know how he's supposed to travel 28 miles a day, spread over 4 journeys in an area that only has buses from Mon-Sat, with NONE on a Sunday and the buses is does have end at 5:30pm in the evening?

Should he walk the 7 miles every night at 11pm-midnight?
Or do you want him to quit his job and go on the dole and us lose our house?

I'll tell him you said it doesn't hurt to walk I'm sure he'll be thrilled. Incidentally I don't drive and my job works perfectly with public transport and the kids can be walked to school. And unlike you, I DO care about the planet.

Dd's daycare is close to home not work so that we don't have to cycle with her - I'm not at all keen on that option.

I started out taking dd on buses. Then I switched to using the car and couldn't go back! I definitely would not like to live without my car.

Meeely2 · 04/06/2008 14:49

thats me told

givemeabreak · 04/06/2008 23:10

yabu. I wouldnt be able to pick son up from nursery, drop him off at dads work and get to my own work on time if i didnt have a car and i cant afford not to work. Some people may not need a car but i certainly do.

slinkiemalinki · 05/06/2008 00:17

"Haven't they heard of a tram?"
I've heard of a tram, just don't have any where I live.
I walk or get the bus when I can (and when I can get on it!) but sometimes multiple tube changes when you are pregnant and lugging a buggy complete with 30lb toddler up and down steps is pretty impossible.
Personally I wouldn't cycle with a child in London - too many adult cyclists are killed as it is.
So OP, I think YABU. And very parochial to think everyone's situation is the same as your own. Why bother getting a car when you don't need one anyway? Hypocritical surely?

Weegiemum · 05/06/2008 00:24

We need a car. My dh is a GP in a rural area (though we are townies - he commutes). Love to know how he is supposed to do housecalls to housebound old people, visit the local hospital where he looks after some Geriatric patients and respond in an emergency if he had no car.

We only have one though - at 37 I still haven't passed my test. I walk a lot, and get the bus. Dd2 has a hip problem that has her still in a buggy at age 4, so I have arm muscles to die for! Our kids get a bus laid on for school, and I use taxis occasionally if the weather is awful and/or I am running very late. But where I lived before here was very remote and rural and was pretty much impossible with no car - dh did a lot of shopping on his way to/from work. We were lucky he was part time! Now I love walking to the supermarket!

Weegiemum · 05/06/2008 00:26

Now I am paranoid that I have made some glaring grammatical or spelling error - I know I have left off a question mark - that is going to leave me more embarrassed than failing my driving test three times!

Zickensprechenunsinn · 06/06/2008 15:26

I haven't got a choice. I can't drive (not my choice) so I have to rely on others or public transport. It's tricky sometimes, but I find a way to do it.

MamaG · 06/06/2008 15:29

I live 25 miles away from work with no direct train route, no chance of working closer, can't afford not to work - bus takes 2.5 hours as goes all around the rural villages.

What do you suggest I do?
