Is anyone better off since Labour

1000 replies

Luckymum20 · 26/08/2025 20:26

I am not just talking financially but feeling optimistic about the future for children, old age.

With the £22 billion debt now pasing £50 billion.

The increase in Council tax (that they said the wouldn't do). OAPs raid on pensions and no Winter fuel relief. Changes to finance regarding care homes. Utilities up. TV licence up. Food costs up...

I know minimum wage has increased but all costs have increased by a greater amount!

In 2021 minimum wage was almost 30% lower than it is now...

So I ask. Is anyone actually feeling better off, optimistic and pleased with this Government.

Also the October budget of likely to bring more stains on the 'average working man"

YABU - change will happen. It a good thing.

YANBU - not good

Train drivers. Train drivers are happier.

Exactly, socialism means everyone but the Government wears sack cloth and ashes. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialism

Funny that, I’m a socialist and still believe in looking to better myself, have a nice house and comfortable life style.

Cantspeakwontspeak · 26/08/2025 23:44

Thortour · 26/08/2025 20:54

I’m not as angry. I like that they are putting in place policies I agree with.
I like that private school fees are subject to VAT. We have been screwed by the Tories and Brexit. The right wing media is out to get them.
We need to face what Brexit has done.
I fear how stupid the electorate is and the massive amount of money going in to discrediting Labour in the press and social media.
I genuinely believe there has been a concerted effort to infiltrate Mumsnet with anti Labour posters.
Also food prices are going to sky rocket because of Climate Change. This has been an appalling years for farmers.

Food prices are rocketing now due to labours NI increase

Yeah I know, being a socialist means stealing from people you scam into believing that you will make their lives better and digging your snout deeper into the trough to stuff yourself as much as you can.

Think you’ll find that’s the Tories and Reform. You have perfectly described Farage and Boris.

WeylandYutani · 26/08/2025 23:47

Everything costs so much more now so I guess I am worse off but that was before Labour came into power anyway. I think people voted for them hoping that things would slow down or even reverse.
I am disabled and live on benefits and the measures the Tories were going to bring in scared people like me. It seems Labour are still going to go ahead with the proposals anyway. We get blamed for the poor financial state of the country and the hatred towards the disabled and people on benefits now is awful.

smallpinecone · 26/08/2025 23:47

Reeves will be out soon enough. It’s a train wreck in slow motion at this point. Somehow she believes she can create growth by talking about it, while doing everything possible to stifle it.

Theyreeatingthedogs · 26/08/2025 23:48

It would be worse if the Tories were still in power. Probably get Farage next, then we'll really see what the shit hitting the fan is like.

Is that your best defence of this shower of shit Labour government? That Tories are socialist? Yeah we know Tories are socialist, because that they left this country with highest ever taxes and state spending with nothing working. Shame but predictable that Labour came in and turned it up many notches.

I hate the tories and we were genuinely excited when labour won, prob less so bc of their policies and more so bc they decimated the tories, but what have Labour done any differently? Other than vow to ruin the countryside with shitty, cheap, new builds?

Nice link to Wikipedia. What does that link have to do with your ridiculous statement? BTW I'm no socialist but you seem to have no understanding of the term.

JollyUmberDeer · 26/08/2025 23:54

Imagine a far left party where the anti corruption minister has to resign over allegations of corruptions and is now being prosecuted by a foreign government for corruption abroad.

Where the anti homelessness minister had to reign over making her tenants homeless to hike their rent.

Where the deputy PM and minister for housing is getting stuck into hosing….but buying up house after house for herself when she doesn’t even earn enough for the sums to add up on where the money to buy these houses is coming from. Oh and the by the she’s built none of the 1.5 million houses she was supposed to build.

A chancellor who was allegedly investigated and jumped before she was fired for fiddling expenses at a previous employer and then lied on her cv to get the job she has.

An energy secretary who is bessie mates with the green lobby.

The list goes on.

So lots of people are doing really well, mostly the pigs with their snouts in the trough who reside in government.

I didn't vote for them, but I now am keeping my fingers crossed given the rise of Reform and all that entails, particularly after hearing Farage today.

Rachel needs to break her fiscal rules, I'm afraid. Instead of tinkering around the edges cutting here and there, she needs to wear her big girl pants and:

Raise income tax across the board by (say) 1% for normal rate and (say) 1.5% for higher rate tax payers. This boil needs lancing right now.

Introduce split-level VAT. Standard rate as it currently applies, but a higher rate for certain goods, e.g. cars over a certain price, long-haul flights etc.

Reduce business rates and employer NI for SMEs, small businesses etc. and incentivise employer/school/college links with further tax relief.

Extend and increase the digital services tax aggressively (Apple, Amazon, etc.).

Extend maternity/paternity support and provide tax incentives or university fee waivers for people having children below (say) 30 years of age.

Suspend Raynor's Employment Rights Bill. Yes, it could be helpful, but not right now. We need to grow the economy first, which means business first.

AND Labour absolutely must improve their political communication and be proactive in dealing with the threat from Reform. I am gobsmacked how utterly poor their communications are. They are losing every debate at the moment, but it doesn't take much more than a tiny brain to pick apart Farage's politics.

Wishing there was the laugh emoji for this comment!

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 26/08/2025 23:57

I'm not happy with the Labour government but I am relieved we finally got the Tories out after 14 years of chaos, so there's that. There's that curse isn't, there? "May you live in interesting times." I will always prefer a boring government over a wacky one which is constantly on the verge of crisis.

Maddy70 · 26/08/2025 23:59

My mum can get an appointment with her Gp practice finally, my nephew is now accessing previously unavailable help in school for his disability.

They are quietly getting the job done like adults

Labour are just tinkering round the edges - we’re heading for a massive financial crash, it’s unavoidable at this point. There’s no more money. Of the 20bn we recently borrowed, 16bn of that went on interest. Labour are totally unwilling to make the drastic cuts they need to make to pull us back from the brink - look at the revolt recently against the welfare cuts. When you’re disabled and in need of state benefits, I wonder why you voted for the party that will ensure you’re worse off? The system is about to buckle. We have a finite amount of money, too many claimants and Labour are actively making the economic situation worse.

I completely agree. They are dealing with years of financial mismanagement too. It will take more than one year to even things out.

I don’t people really understand just how dire the state of the country’s finances is. We are spending way too much on welfare largesse while the highest rate taxpayers have left the country already since Labour came to power.

An IMF bailout is imminent. What a disaster.

IMF bailout indeed - we’re re-running the 1970s at high speed. Back then it took 10% of their reserves - now it would need closer to 50% - that’s an unthinkable amount of money to spend bailing out one single nation!

OonaStubbs · 27/08/2025 00:05

Labour have been disappointing to say the least. It's a far cry from 1997 when Labour won and you could feel the difference almost straight away.

That’s when the problems began sadly. Gordon Brown did unbelievable damage.

They’re a long way from perfect, have zero
vision or dynamism, and have been a huge disappointment. That said, they’ve introduced several policies I agree with, are steady and reliable, and I’m comforted that the chaos of the period from 2016 to 2024 is over.

He did. He was set the scene for the disaster that is awaiting this country.
