Is anyone better off since Labour

1000 replies

Luckymum20 · 26/08/2025 20:26

I am not just talking financially but feeling optimistic about the future for children, old age.

With the £22 billion debt now pasing £50 billion.

The increase in Council tax (that they said the wouldn't do). OAPs raid on pensions and no Winter fuel relief. Changes to finance regarding care homes. Utilities up. TV licence up. Food costs up...

I know minimum wage has increased but all costs have increased by a greater amount!

In 2021 minimum wage was almost 30% lower than it is now...

So I ask. Is anyone actually feeling better off, optimistic and pleased with this Government.

Also the October budget of likely to bring more stains on the 'average working man"

YABU - change will happen. It a good thing.

YANBU - not good

I voted for them and I was really hopeful at the time.

But I am horrified now at how they victimised disabled people, made a mess of the economy and seem completely unable and unwilling to make real changes to try to address the cost of living crisis.

I am also concerned that they are making Reform more popular by being so incompetent as a government and betraying Labour core values and the people who voted for them.

Reeves needs to be sacked to start with and Starmer needs to remember he was not elected to act like a Tory.

I’m not as angry. I like that they are putting in place policies I agree with.
I like that private school fees are subject to VAT. We have been screwed by the Tories and Brexit. The right wing media is out to get them.
We need to face what Brexit has done.
I fear how stupid the electorate is and the massive amount of money going in to discrediting Labour in the press and social media.
I genuinely believe there has been a concerted effort to infiltrate Mumsnet with anti Labour posters.
Also food prices are going to sky rocket because of Climate Change. This has been an appalling years for farmers.

I agree

The same right wing media that encouraged people to vote for brexit and ended with us bumbling out of the single market and putting the country into decline ever since. Thanks for that Tories!

How can you go from paying for private school to being eligible for state benefits?

I was using inheritance. Had enough, now don't and there's nothing left in the pot after that. Edit because I would have put her in because she has had the best education compared to her state primary which is something I don't regret, but now can't move her until exams are done.

Angela Rayner She's just bought a second home for £800k.

Actually she’s calling it her primary residence, for tax and council tax purposes not a second home. Despite the fact that to all intents and purposes her primary residence is the grace and favour flat in Admiralty Arch. But, if she declared that as her primary residence she’d be picking up the tab for the 100% uplift on the council tax for second homes in Brighton. Whereas her way means the tax payer picks up the surcharge on Admiralty Arch.

AliTheMinx · 26/08/2025 23:00

No. I feel absolutely screwed over by Labour. We are financially a lot worse off due to VAT on school fees and all bills and costs have gone through the roof. I feel very gloomy about it all and no doubt Revves.will screw us.over even more with her tax plans. I am very disappointed in Labour and haven't benefitted from.any of their policies.

Yolo12345 · 26/08/2025 23:05

We are all worse off since Brexit

6thformoptions · 26/08/2025 23:06

They've targeted PIP recipients FGS, hardly a left wing approach!
If they could sort out the huge gap in taxes by getting cash in hand trades (mostly men) to pay them in the first place maybe I would be less affronted that they decided to target kids and education with the VAT on schools, but they seem to love the fact so many men don't pay child support or tax. It makes my brain bend.

They have prioritised a gonorrea vaccine (again mostly benefits hyper sexed men) over funding better maternity care. I hated how Starmer couldn't even admit what a woman is until he had no other choice. It's all just very weak and not what I expected from the left.

Doesn't she own another home in her constituency? Does that mean she would still pay the extra council tax on at least one of these?

JollyUmberDeer · 26/08/2025 21:36

Of course they are.

Two Tier’s lawyer friends are raking it in from his immigration policies. Those benefitting from corrupt green subsidies. And Angela Rayner. She’s buying houses all over the place. What a socialist.

When the day comes when she has more houses than the likes of Farage and Boris have, then we can criticise her. They had everything handed to them on a plate - private schools, parents networks, where as Rayner came from nothing.

You do know that being a socialist doesn’t mean wearing sack cloth and ashes and living in a council house!

It’s either paranoia or deflection to blame the wave of negative reactions to an incompetent and financially illiterate government on a concerted infiltration of mumsnet by anti Labour posters. The fact is the Government is a shambles, with no policies, no plan and no convictions. I get it - you were duped and want to blame others for that. But you are not alone…it’s just that many of the others that have been duped can now see that they have been misled.

You can attribute it to ‘right wing’ press, by which I assume you mean press you don’t agree with, since much of the traditionally left wing press is equally scathing of the governments record, but that’s to misunderstand the issue in my opinion. The markets have seen through it, and bond yields at a 30 year high tell us what they think of the governments credibility.

ThatWaryOchreQuoter · 26/08/2025 23:11

I don’t think anyone is better off since Labour, excluding flag factory owners and Mauritius.

Oh yes, but she should be paying the uplift on both of them. But by calling her home by the seaside her primary residence, which happens to be not that commutable to work, she avoids paying on one of them…and we pick up the tab for it.

Helpfully for her by not making ether Admiralty House or her constituency home her primary residence, but instead nominating her holiday home, she now shelters a higher amount from potential CGT as the more expensive of the two properties she own is now subject to PPR rather than the cheaper constituency one :)

However, I shouldn’t criticise, as this governments war on achievement and championing of levelling down means that, for the first time in more than 20 years, I’ll be moving away from the UK and shifting my tax residency.

As well as mumsnet, the enemies of Labour also seem to have infiltrated the gilt markets, opinion polls, the job market and the IMF.

Hellohelga · 26/08/2025 23:20

Labour are doing lots of things I agree with. New deal with Europe, big investment in science, tech and AI, inv in NHS - more doctors and more appointments, private schools VAT, welfare reform - some u turns have been needed but they are right to try and reform it. I’m no worse off financially.

And the bond markets were so great under the tories? Remember Liz Truss? I lost a third of my pension.

Nope, my company has made redundancies, my bills have all gone up, and I feel worse now that I have ever felt about remaining in England.

My take home is lower, my working conditions (public sector) are untenable. I don't blame them, nobody could fix the mess that was made in that time, but I don't see them doing any more than tiddling about the edges. Something radical needs to change.

Yeah I know, being a socialist means stealing from people you scam into believing that you will make their lives better and digging your snout deeper into the trough to stuff yourself as much as you can.

Erm I hate to be the one to break this to you, but yes they’ve managed to ‘out Truss’ Truss.

NoKidsSendDogs · 26/08/2025 23:34

Not better off not worse off but we dont have kids and are high earners so a couple hundred here and there in our pay packets isn't noticeable. That being said, we def resent being taxed so much while seeing no benefits to it and are working very hard to leave the uk for good. We had been toying with the idea of leaving but were also in the process of buying a very expensive house, however after some very long, late night discussions, we both decided that a future in the UK looked bleak and pulled out of our house purchase at the 11th hour. I'm not sure where we will end up just yet but I think we are both so happy we didn't tether ourselves to the UK. First time both of us felt hopeful in a very long time, take from that what you will.

HostaCentral · 26/08/2025 23:35

The markets don't trust them, and that's bad. We pay a far higher rate for our borrowing than any other high debt country, and there are many, most of the G7 in fact, why? Because we are untrustworthy, and haven't implemented any cost cutting nor growth strategies, in fact, quite the opposite.
