To think this is a healthy pizza!?

It's from MarksandSparks, to be split in two and shared with a sardine salad. Will add pic with a screenshot of ingredients.

SIL shook her head at it when shopping with me and said it was franken-food. I don't think it's so bad at all, if your'e not jumpy about seed oil. It's lovely with healthy toppings of your own added to it.
Not as good as homemade, but once a week isn't going to murder anyone surely?? Grin

How far do we take this UPF thing?

I am in London. Breathing is definitively NOT healthy with the level of pollution in here.

Doomed, I am doomed I tell you.

Ah, shame for you. Breatharianism won't be an option then in the big smoke?
No other way to escape the plethora of pesticides that are in our (even organic) vegetables. Nothing left to consume apart from air! Nothing is safe. And there I was hoping I'd cheat death with potatoes..

Rapeseed oil has a better profile than sunflower based on the Omega 3, 6 and 9 factor.

I think the issue with seed (& veg) oils is not the nutritional profile but the processing. You can get cold pressed rapeseed oil but most will be a chemical extraction. I'm not sure if the typical processing comes under the category of RBD (refined, bleached and deoderised) which is the highest level, but that is why they are considered an ultra-processed food, because the processing involves non-food ingredients and atypical preservation or processing methods.

Potatoes are in the nightshade or solanaceae family and therefore 100% poison (especially the green ones).

So are tomatoes, peppers, aubergines...

Your SIL should concern herself more with improving her manners than criticising what others are eating

The food sounds healthy and absolutely fine to have occasionally

Potatoes are 100% poison??

Seriously???

Tell her to bore off.

ChangingWeight · 25/08/2025 13:45

I wouldn’t say it’s Franken but I wouldn’t say it’s healthy either. It’s a supermarket ready made pizza. I was vegetarian and I wouldn’t look at that, and think “healthy meal”. It would definitely be cheat day.

No. I thought I was being obviously sarcastic. They are in the solanaceae/nightshade family, though! But that doesn't make them (or tomatoes etc) poisonous.

However (non sarcastic), fully green potatoes and the shoots above ground contain the toxin solanine, and you'd probably vom quite a lot. Which is why we eat them when yellow/red :)

TheBreezeTheBreeze · 25/08/2025 10:27

She eats super healthy from scratch, lol, however I do achieve about 80% myself so not too shabby all in all.

It is high in sat fat and salt but cut in half over two days or shared reduces that.
Also love it with rocket, garlic, olives and other goodies.

I like your approach more. Healthy food is important but indulging our taste buds every now and then is better and more sustainable than being overly obsessed over food and depriving yourself a little pleasure.

RAW potatoes can be very dangerous, yes, especially when green. Cooked however they are fine.

But even cooked, potatoes contain Nicotine as do other nightshade family plants, and surprisingly cauliflower as well. So sorry, if you believe it's the nicotine in cigarettes that kills you (as opposed to the normal combustion products of burning plant matter) then your potatoes, tomatoes and peppers will give you cancer so THEY are off them menu.... 😆

TheBreezeTheBreeze · 25/08/2025 13:51

I don't think she likes carbs. Eats good stuff though. Maybe she would have given it a pass had the base been composed of lettuce.

I actually saw a post on Reddit recently where a low carb guy who LOVED pizza had created a base from compacted beef. That was visually...interesting.

You're the second to comment seriously, clearly my sarcasm wasn't obvious enough 😂

I love potatoes.

It's clearly not the worst, but I also don't eat seed oils (or that much carbs) so I'd not buy it/eat it either. It's generally a much better option than many and I wouldn't call it franken food, just not for me.

Sorry @Agapornis , saw your explanation after I'd posted. But you can't really blame me, I remember having a discussion on MN years ago with someone who swore any amount of nicotine however small made her really ill (talking about vaping), but would quite happily eat potatoes & tomatoes.

@TheBreezeTheBreeze you can make low or even no carb pizza bases using things like almond flour (v low carb) or even compressed shredded veg like courgettes. But IMO absolutely pointless, a decent base is a big part of a pizza to me (just can't have decent quality tomato sauce on it, have to have it blind or with something like barbecue).

Matter of interest, those who won't use seed oil what do you use for cooking?

Artesia · 25/08/2025 14:04

She sounds insufferable. I'd have had to buy a tin of Ye Olde Oake hot dogs there and then, and eat them directly from the tin, one by one, while maintaining continuous eye contact with the ridiculous SiL.

Butter, olive oil and lard.

Much unhealthier than op but I’ll often use butter and a splodge of olive oil to stop it burning. I tend to capture natural fats too. So the run off from a joint of meat cooking, let it cool seperate and freeze. The juice/ jelly is brilliant for stock, fat for frying. Chicken for risotto or using a bit of lamb fat to fry off minced beef for bolognaise adds a depth of flavour.

Olive oil, butter, coconut oil, sesame oil depending on the cuisine.

I don't deep fry at home so no need to keep a high heat oil in, just get my fill of chips etc when out and about.
