To think this is a healthy pizza!?

It's from MarksandSparks, to be split in two and shared with a sardine salad. Will add pic with a screenshot of ingredients.

SIL shook her head at it when shopping with me and said it was franken-food. I don't think it's so bad at all, if your'e not jumpy about seed oil. It's lovely with healthy toppings of your own added to it.
Not as good as homemade, but once a week isn't going to murder anyone surely?? Grin

How far do we take this UPF thing?

Oh my goodness yes! It's in almost every "convenience" food, including supermarket bread. At one time they were even adulterating sunflower oil with it - don't know if they still are, as I've stopped using that too. I found a report by NHS Scotland discussing whether rapeseed oil should be highlighted in bold in the list of contents, and they concluded no, because "not very many people" have a problem with the muck.

Avocado oil mayonnaise is delicious, though!

Rapeseed oil has a better profile than sunflower based on the Omega 3, 6 and 9 factor.

TheBreezeTheBreeze · 25/08/2025 11:58

Well this is all enough to make a person dizzy!

I suppose at this point on MN, maybe we could compile a list of foods that aren't 'muck', or poison. It might make for a short list Grin

I doubt this would be a good time to recommend my escargot and beetle pesto?

Marks and Spencer Pizza are lovey l get them weekly , as with a let's say fish salad um no , l find the pizza enough on its own , although love fish not keen on fish salad m and s are also price compare not to bad

doodleschnoodle · 25/08/2025 11:58

I don’t think salad is unusual with a pizza? Especially if you’re having lunch or something where you’re taking a couple of slices of pizza and filling plate with other stuff v just eating a whole pizza. I like to have rocket actually on my pizza though!

TheBreezeTheBreeze · 25/08/2025 11:59

OK I shall address the fish salad Grin

It is in a small bowl like a finger bowl type thing mixed with chopped pepper, etc. It is a small side. The rocket is on the pizza as well as the olives in this case.

It isn't a whopping salad in a traditional sense. Hope that eases some of the stress load.

The only unhealthy attitude is to faint at the idea of normal food. A ready-made pizza once in awhile is not the enemy.

Obsessing about food and making it your entire focus in life is very unhealthy. Your SIL has issues she should work on 😂

Chazbots · 25/08/2025 12:00

doodleschnoodle · 25/08/2025 11:49

Yes I work out pretty much every day, do quite a lot of endurance work on the bike and weight training alongside generally being active, and we eat pizza every week! I do eat mainly high protein but pizza is a thing of joy and carbs are not the enemy. I make the dough in the breadmaker and then 2 mins in the pizza oven and it’s perfect 👌

Crosta and Mollica stuff is pretty UPF-free, but although I try to be very mindful of UPF I don’t get in a tizzy about seed oils or UPF condiments or meal when out. 80/20 is a good balance to have I think. For me I’m mostly 100% UPF-free at home but don’t really consider it when out and about. I just try to avoid artificial emulsifiers, preservatives, gums, bulking agents and thickeners mainly when I am the one in control. If I’m not in control then I don’t worry about it. I would eat that pizza and not think anything more of it.

Edited

Yep, this...

I have been known to be a clean eater, etc and I'm definitely not as svelte as I could be but one of the main issues amongst women ultra and endurance athletes is getting enough food for appropriate fueling.

Pizza is fine. Perfectly good food. 😆

It may be so, but I can't get away from the fact that if I eat anything which contains it, several hours later I get abdominal pain and need several visits to the loo!

GreyCarpet · 25/08/2025 12:01

Livingthebestlife · 25/08/2025 11:54

Yeah but cold lettuce and hot pizza just don't go together. Lettuce just doesn't belong on or with pizza. I eat lettuce with ham or chicken or on a cold sandwich.

In your opinion 😉

A rocket, red onion, mozzarella and vine tomato salad goes really well with a couple of slices of good quality warm pizza!

I suppose it rather depends on what you think of when you think 'salad' and 'pizza' 🤷🏻‍♀️

Annielou67 · 25/08/2025 12:03

I’m a food nut job - but also a realist. In the general scheme of things for a bought pizza this has to be one of the best I’ve seen.

TheBreezeTheBreeze · 25/08/2025 12:04

Hold on to your hats ladies, but we used to have pizza with BACON.
Don't tell anyone.

Dough: flour, salt, yeast, water

Sauce: tomato

Cheese: milk

No garlic or pesto then. Just a very plain flavourless pizza

Doesn't replicate what the OP bought

And you didn't say you made your own mozzarella...

I'll be sure to remember that as I spend hours glued to the toilet.

DiscoBob · 25/08/2025 12:10

It's just a shop bought pizza. Of course there are additives and preservatives in it.
Tell her she can make her own using flour and water and yeast.
But you'll happily be tucking into the marks one.

TheBreezeTheBreeze · 25/08/2025 12:13

What preservatives are in it? I may have overlooked something here...

She actually called it FRANKEN-CHOW which got a laugh out of me at least.

She's lovely in all other ways, just a bit 'on it' with food.

Why did your sil's parents not teach her any manners? I've taught mine not to make rude or judgemental comments on other people's food.

Also, what's the recipe for fish salad pleasE? I like sardines.

Dried fermented wheat flour, aka propionate, aka E280-283. See the link I posted above for more information.

I don't know what they're called but nearly all ready made foods have something like that to extend shelf life.

There are no additives or preservatives in this pizza. This pizza is pretty much as you would make one at home. Pizza s not inherently unhealthy if made with plain fresh ingredients, which this pretty much is. The list is long because they have to list out all the sub ingredients of the basic ingredients.

SaltAirAndTheRust · 25/08/2025 11:39

So no herbs, no garlic, no oil? You could make something a bit like a plain pizza with 6 ingredients, but it would be pretty dull. 6 ingredients would be a minimum, not tops as was claimed.

Glutamate is a normal amino acid and tomatoes are naturally very high in it.

MSG, however, is artificially manufactured and does not always agree with a lot of people. Many people monitor their intake of MSG and to avoid that, there are a number of ways of labelling it. I don’t know if that signifies different manufacturing processes. https://mamavation.com/featured/90-hidden-msg-ingredients.html

Yes and yeast extract isn't the same as MSG. It may contain small quantities of it but yeast extract is marmite or whatever, not MSG (which is a crystal like a salt).

Is Yeast Extract Bad for Me?

Yeast extract is found in bread, beer, and many other products. But is it good for you?
