To think this is a healthy pizza!?

It's from MarksandSparks, to be split in two and shared with a sardine salad. Will add pic with a screenshot of ingredients.

SIL shook her head at it when shopping with me and said it was franken-food. I don't think it's so bad at all, if your'e not jumpy about seed oil. It's lovely with healthy toppings of your own added to it.
Not as good as homemade, but once a week isn't going to murder anyone surely?? Grin

How far do we take this UPF thing?

Some people just don’t understand what UPF is Not sure I totally get it , I accept it as having ingredients in it that I don’t have access to so looking at that list it’s fine.

Your sister is spending too much time on the internet me thinks.

Grammarnut · 25/08/2025 10:50

It's mainly about ultra-processed food, which is a source both of ill-health and menstrual problems in women. Milli Hill has a book out on it.
I try to cook from scratch most days - and had cut out bacon (not properly cured but chemically cured) and lots of cooked meats esp for my late DH (who died of the widowmaker, a cardiac arrest). SiL may have a point.

GreyCarpet · 25/08/2025 10:51

Not sure why they'd lie to us.

Money?

I don't know. I don't have the answer. I do tend to avoid seed oils generally because I don't like the taste but I wouldn't be so naive as to believe no big company would promote something for financial gain.

Breakfast wasn't a big thing until Kellogg's promoted it to sell their cereals. And now look at how many people parrot that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

Likewise with snacking. Snacking wasn't a thing that anyone thought was necessary until companies started producing 'healthy snacks' they wanted to sell.

TheBreezeTheBreeze · 25/08/2025 10:53

this pizza is not a big deal. my diet is generally tip top.

Rapeseed oil is absolute poison to some people - me included! It produces very unpleasant gastric symptoms. It seems to be in almost everything you buy these days and is so hard to avoid. I wish it could be banned and we could revert to sunflower oil.

FollowSpot · 25/08/2025 11:08

GreyCarpet · 25/08/2025 10:27

An M&S pizza isn't any less good or bad than any other shop bought pizza. So I wouldn't be swayed by that.

But, equally, a shop bought pizza once a week isn't going to kill anyone.

To be fair some shop bought pizzas are topped with highly processed cheese, highly processed meat products, fast-processed dough, full of preservatives, etc.

But agreed, are unlikely to kill you at one shared, once a week.

That’s an Australian site with a list of personal experiences
if you're fine with MSG then eat it, if you’re allergic to it then don’t eat it and don’t eat foods which has it in naturally
common sense surely?

Huge amounts of our sunflower oil came from Ukraine 😢

So it's potatoes with our sardine salad then? Grin

If you’re looking for no seed oils crosta ans mollica do a good range; used to have no seed oils at all but recently they have added a bit of sunflower oil annoyingly. I buy the bases and add our own toppings. Properoni is good as no sulphites.

HerLivingontheHilltop · 25/08/2025 11:15

What is a Franken?

I don't see why anyone needs pizza and sardine salad.
Surely it's one or the other?

No, just buy a product with better quality ingredients. There's no need for a pizza to contain MSG.

A lot of rapeseed is organic and produced by local farms. We have some nearby and it's often rated as healthier than sunflower oil.

Surely you have a pizza as a main course or a sardine salad?

Takeaway2021 · 25/08/2025 11:20

It's not healthy at all really, an all veggie pizza would be an improvement. But a once a week treat, with the rest of your diet being healthy, it is not going to kill you.

SaltAirAndTheRust · 25/08/2025 11:21

TheBreezeTheBreeze · 25/08/2025 10:48

TBH i think it is as long as my leg, not my arm, so you could be right!

Let's see: I'd need the dough, water, salt, yeast, 30 hrs to ferment. Then I'd need tomato and passata, grated regato, mozzarella, pesto (so add basil, oil, garlic, lemon, salt, pine nuts), puree, herbs.

Bit more than 6 ingredients to make at home...

30 hours?! You can knock up a good pizza dough in an afternoon.

TheBreezeTheBreeze · 25/08/2025 11:22

I am fairly well up on my UPF but had no idea about fermented wheat four and yeast extract. What about malted wheat flour ?

TBH i can see why some people become a bit neurotic about it, it's certainly a rabbit hole of horrors!

I like my food so am happy to carry on as I do, but am considering making own pizza again - used to do this weekly but let it slide.

Yes, sorry - I just meant that the OP can still have pizza, just a better quality one. I agree both probably aren't needed in the same meal.

doodleschnoodle · 25/08/2025 11:26

The Crosta Mollica ones are really nice although pricey.

But actually since we got a pizza oven we haven’t bought pizza anywhere except the odd meal out because it’s never as nice as the fresh ones we make at home now. We used to get a takeaway pizza every so often or have some frozen ones in, but no one likes them as much as home ones now and they’re so quick and easy to make with the pizza oven (we have the Ninja electric one so literally plug in and go). If you like pizza, it’s a really good investment. We use it at least once a week for pizza and often for a joint of meat too as it’s also a smoker.

She is a FrankInLaw.

OP: I hope you enjoyed your pizza.

You already pay attention to eating an overall healthy diet. Does following your SIL down a rabbit hole of neurotic eating help a healthy mind?
