To be devasted the roundabout in my town has a crappy 'flag' painted on?

I nearly threw up when I saw it this morning - what a horrible shock.

It's a very small town in the Midlands near a city. Yes it's ex-mining but does reasonable ok now, not deprived eg no contextual offers for my dc for uni, but not massively desirable or trendy. Has a Labour MP now but hasn't always in recent years. Voted for Brexit but only just. In 2019 more people voted against Tories AND Brexit than for them - split the vote so we still got a Tory, but still.

In other words, I did not expect this. It's horrible - looks ugly and badly done even before you get started on the thinking behind it. AIBU to ring the council on Tuesday and ask when they are going to deal with this vandalism?

I did a four hour round-trip on the motorway today too and the amount of flags on bridges was shocking - just make it stop.

I just got back from Spain. There were loads of flags and bunting out over there. Looked lovely.

You should maybe seek some kind of mental health help because that’s not a normal reaction at all.

Also pretty much every other country displays and flys their flag with pride but the second it’s England we best fetch the smelling salts and clutch our pearls.

All the roundabouts in my sleepy town have been painted as well. Although I don’t necessarily agree with it, I think nearly throwing up is quite an extreme reaction.

The thickos doing this will soon get bored when it rains and they can't swagger about with their paintbrushes, swigging cans of beer.

Bunting and actual flags may well look pretty. A badly painted St George's Cross slapped onto a mini-roundabout does not. That's before you consider the other issues.

ugh. So tacky. If people want to fly the flag then they can do it on their own property although quite frankly, we all know this is not about being patriotic. If it was, they’d have been flying them for years.

I haven't seen people in other countries slapping paint around their infrastructure. May be wrong though.

Painting crosses on roundabouts is probably the nearest thing to work they have done for years.

I’m pretty sure Spain did a lot of anti tourist spray painting. Not flags so many not offensive to some.

@BettyBobble It's not a 'nod to St George,' though is it? It's an aggressive act rooted in xenophobia. Like cats marking their territory these people are swishing the paint around and it needs to stop.

Same happened in my town and I wasn’t happy either. I was surprised too and annoyed to be misrepresented.

You’ve probably got a tummy bug coming. It’s not proportionate to experience such a dramatic reaction to the national flag.

Go and paint over it.

Either return it to white or if you feel creative something else entirely

I’m with you OP. I’m proud to be British not English. I hate the English flag - it looks tacky and reminds me of a first aid box. My back garden backs onto a main road and there’s a lamppost in the middle of the garden boundary. I’ll be straight on to the Council if it gets a flag stuck on it asking for its removal on the grounds of the racist connotations to it.

There’s nothing wrong with the English flag when it’s there to celebrate. The low life vandalising public areas are doing it to intimidate people who aren’t white. Anyone saying anything different are either stupidly naive or just plain stupid.
