I nearly threw up when I saw it this morning - what a horrible shock.

It's a very small town in the Midlands near a city. Yes it's ex-mining but does reasonable ok now, not deprived eg no contextual offers for my dc for uni, but not massively desirable or trendy. Has a Labour MP now but hasn't always in recent years. Voted for Brexit but only just. In 2019 more people voted against Tories AND Brexit than for them - split the vote so we still got a Tory, but still.

In other words, I did not expect this. It's horrible - looks ugly and badly done even before you get started on the thinking behind it. AIBU to ring the council on Tuesday and ask when they are going to deal with this vandalism?

I did a four hour round-trip on the motorway today too and the amount of flags on bridges was shocking - just make it stop.

I haven't seen people in other countries slapping paint around their infrastructure. May be wrong though.

You haven't travelled very widely then.

A part of Spain that wants independence from the rest of Spain flys their flag which differs from the Spanish National Flag all over the place and paints it on buildings along with various slogans.

NeustrianPeasant · 24/08/2025 21:35

The brushwork is probably very poor. And I can’t imagine that the edging is of a good standard.

But I doubt some shoddy paint job would make me vomit. Maybe the vandals around you are especially bad?

Anyway, it’s not a good use of public property so I do wish they’d stop.

As much as gesture identity politics is annoying, this seems a very odd thing to get worked up about. We have Palestine and pride flag everywhere, makes a bit of a change.

I think I'd quite like it. A nod to St George in England? How wonderful 👍

St George was Turkish

BettysRoasties · 24/08/2025 21:26

You nearly threw up because someone painted a flag.

You should maybe seek some kind of mental health help because that’s not a normal reaction at all.

Also pretty much every other country displays and flys their flag with pride but the second it’s England we best fetch the smelling salts and clutch our pearls.

That’s because it’s been weaponised by the Far Right. Tommy Robinson is funding this.

BetweenTwoFerns · 24/08/2025 21:37

I also live in an ex mining town in the midlands. And my family are immigrants. My husband is on a visa. He’s not white. We couldn’t care less about the flags. We’ve lived in a country before this where they lived a flag so maybe that’s why.

I’m with you OP. I’m proud to be British not English. I hate the English flag - it looks tacky and reminds me of a first aid box. My back garden backs onto a main road and there’s a lamppost in the middle of the garden boundary. I’ll be straight on to the Council if it gets a flag stuck on it asking for its removal on the grounds of the racist connotations to it.

Racist connotations to the English flag... in England?

Because it’s well used by fascist and racists

Who is funding this couldn't be clearer if they were paying in Roubles

The posts on this thread are unbelievable. It’s right wing muscle flexing. Did none of you study history at school? Sickening.

Are you not English OP?

BettysRoasties · 24/08/2025 21:41

Maybe it’s time we stopped letting bullies steal the flag for their agenda and saw it just as a flag again a mere simple flag of a country.

Liesmorelies · 24/08/2025 21:41

As someone said, if it's just about patriotism, why are they suddenly appearing now? It's terrifying what is happening to this country. It's because I am patriotic in my way that this not only frightens me, but really saddens me too. This is not the Britain I grew up in. This is not how we were in the 90s.

They are the human equivalent of dogs that piss up lamp posts to mark their territory.

OP from this description, I'm 90% certain we live in the same town.

Anyway, yes, I'm appalled too. People can say what they want, but the only purpose of this bs is to embolden racism and make people feel unwelcome.

youalright · 24/08/2025 21:43

Its not the first time roundabouts have been painted its been done in the past for football

GrooveArmada · 24/08/2025 21:43

OP, I get what you're saying. AIBU is wild, as always - either deliberately obtuse, or not grasping the background, or most of the commenting lot actually think this way, I can't decide. Regardless, most normal people know this isn't a flag celebration and YANBU.
