I nearly threw up when I saw it this morning - what a horrible shock.

It's a very small town in the Midlands near a city. Yes it's ex-mining but does reasonable ok now, not deprived eg no contextual offers for my dc for uni, but not massively desirable or trendy. Has a Labour MP now but hasn't always in recent years. Voted for Brexit but only just. In 2019 more people voted against Tories AND Brexit than for them - split the vote so we still got a Tory, but still.

In other words, I did not expect this. It's horrible - looks ugly and badly done even before you get started on the thinking behind it. AIBU to ring the council on Tuesday and ask when they are going to deal with this vandalism?

I did a four hour round-trip on the motorway today too and the amount of flags on bridges was shocking - just make it stop.

The faux-naivete from the bigots on here is nauseating. These flagshaggers are displaying the flag because if they painted 'all foreigners should duck off back where they came from' they'd probably be arrested. But we all know what they mean. Snivelling, whinging, craven cowards the lot of them.

😂

PyongyangKipperbang · 24/08/2025 22:08

I dont like it but "devastated" and "nearly threw up" is a massive over reaction

All sounds very dramatic and OTT.

Such hard work.

Readyforslippers · 24/08/2025 22:08

The trouble is patriotism is about loving one's country, but the current use of the flags is all about hate.

QueenOfHiraeth · 24/08/2025 22:08

I have no time for racism or xenophobia but, equally, have no time for being told that anything associated with our national flag is right wing, racist, etc.
If the national flag has those connotations then it is time we reclaimed it.

I am far from right wing myself but am appalled at the left wing posts I am seeing all over social media describing working class folk in terms that would never be tolerated if used against people of colour or from other countries. I actually hope that some of them are bots because, if not, I despair of humanity. It is hypocrisy of the highest order

ShesTheAlbatross · 24/08/2025 22:03

The irony.

St George had a Palestinian mother, grew up in Palestine, and is their patron saint.

He's also the Patron Saint of a part of Spain, he certainly got around a fair bit.

HushTheNoise · 24/08/2025 22:09

The racism IS sickening. At least you know where they live now. There's a horrible FB group in my area, full of people wanting to 'raise the colours'. Not the brightest as they also suggested that sharing the group with ten people each will double it's size! They don't seem to understand that our economy is built on migration, they love a takeaway round here, they'd be gutted if they all shut.

I cant vote because of your hyperbolic amateur dramatics

However, at the moment the vandalism is clearly designed to be intimidating, its not just the equivalent of the flags you see in other countries.

Its also going to bring house prices down, apparently people are put off areas where there is this sort of thing going on because of the fear of anti social behaviour.

anotherside · 24/08/2025 22:11

Apart from anything else this flag shagging is a seriously unBritish thing to be doing.

Liesmorelies · 24/08/2025 22:12

Yes, on a less-principled/dramatic and more pragmatic note, I am glad I won't be trying to sell my house anytime soon.

We are British what’s wrong with an English flag - our country is going to the dogs and if people want to show some patriotism so what!!! Honestly you need to get a life this is madness

Cluborange666 · 24/08/2025 22:12

I agree with you op. It’s tacky and low brow. Plus the crosses are painted really horribly too.

Insidemyownhead · 24/08/2025 22:12

As a society I think we really need to look at the entitlement that you (and many others) think you have a right to go through life with everyone having the same viewpoint as yourself, as well as believing you have the right to never be ‘offended’.
youre driving past a flag; not a lynching.

Serpentstooth · 24/08/2025 22:13

Pp above said it makes them racist and stupid. Incorrect, they're already both, and incapable of marshalling a rational defence of their repellent xenophobia other than to mock the OP. There's better quality.discourse in primary school playgrounds.

WooleyMunky · 24/08/2025 22:03

A Greek soldier who lived and died in Palestine. What could be more British?

Almost all the patron saints of various countries didnt come from that particular country by the nature of what religious people tended to do in those days which later made them a saint

He isnt meant to be 'British', its just a patron saint, he is affiliated (if that is the right word) with tons of countries.

You’ve probably got a tummy bug coming. It’s not proportionate to experience such a dramatic reaction to the national flag.

It’s probably to the raging racism.

Entitlement is private individuals hanging flags/painting stuff in public areas without public consent.

Silverbirchleaf · 24/08/2025 22:15

LizzieSiddal · 24/08/2025 21:34

There’s nothing wrong with the English flag when it’s there to celebrate. The low life vandalising public areas are doing it to intimidate people who aren’t white. Anyone saying anything different are either stupidly naive or just plain stupid.

This.

@Liesmorelies surely even you must realise that everyone is entitled to free speech? this means that every one else's opinion is not going to be the same as yours. they are obviously horrified at what is happening but their view of what should happen afterwards is different to your view.

NeustrianPeasant · 24/08/2025 22:16

On the national saints front, to be fair, St Andrew was a fisherman from Galilee, St Patrick was British (and if you’re a purist about these things not a truly a saint at all).

St David was a local boy though. 👍

I think the English should have St Alban as a national saint. He may have been a Roman but at least he met his end in Hertfordshire.

Fancyachangefromitall · 24/08/2025 22:16

Are you serious? You sound very dramatic and unhinged to me, so people are displaying their country flag. Surely that’s a good thing and something to celebrate.

ContraryNoodle · 24/08/2025 22:16

Just out of curiosity, do you scream in the Sistine Chapel...?

The U.K. economy is not built on immigration

But if it’s in public areas, I’m assuming the people putting it there are also “the public”.
