AIBU to ask about this whole ‘painting flags on roundabouts’ thing?

England flags have appeared all over my nice town, painted on to the mini roundabouts. What kind of a ‘thing’ is this? Is it a Reform thing, a football thing or a ‘proud to be English’ thing?
If it’s a reform thing, WIBU to go down and add “England welcomes you to our country” to all the red crosses?

Not more small boats!

It’s not Vikings, it’s just Angela Rayner.

Xenophobia. They are especially outside hotels housing asylum seekers.

I keep hearing people arguing that in other countries, like USA, flags are everywhere, so it is just a normal patriotic thing to do. Well it isn't here because we normally only have them out for special occasions.

No, you can’t just pretend it’s just some nice patriotism when they’re shouting racist abuse as they do it.

Thank you for posting this.

I saw the video and early reports on Facebook yesterday but didn't want to be too specific to avoid driving up engagement with problematic accounts on social media.

I mentioned it twice at various points on this thread and it has been steadfastly ignored by the "patriotic". I wonder why that is.

Ginmonkeyagain · 25/08/2025 10:29

Flag shagging is not my thing but each to their own. The current "trend" just looks laughably shit though. I was in Islington on Saturday and someone had tied a load of cheap polyester Union flags halfway up some lamp posts. It looked for all the world like a very a minor royal had died and the council had sent the work experience lad to organise a very half arsed tribute.

The oddest thing is the Mall, not three miles from that location is pretty much permanently festooned with very large and good quality Union flags, so it is not as if our national flag isn't flown in London.

Oh, I posted it twice on the other thread, only once on this one. Apologies. But the point still stands.

I wondered if she was a one woman channel crossing patrol.

YABU for starting yet another thread on flags

To be fair, I checked the first two pages of AIBU for flag posts in case the answer was already there. And there weren’t any at that point.

Are you happy with them painting on the roundabouts and zebra crossings?

Don't agree with painting on zebra crossings, didn't agree with the rainbow ones either, but I quite like the crosses on the mini roundabouts as it makes them stand out more. None have been painted in my area though!

GoldMerchant · 25/08/2025 10:58

They turned up in our area this morning. I found it really hard to explain to my DS6 why they were there - and yes, I know I could have lied and said "oh it's the rugby" or "oh don't worry about it" but a lot of non white families don't have that possibility.

We have one rainbow pride (not trans pride) crossing in town maintained by the council. So I don't have any truck with the argument this is somehow equalizing things when the majority of road markings are just that.

There are also ways of opposing housing asylum seekers in hotels (a policy I don't think works either) without drawing in ethnonationalism.

Thisismadness · 25/08/2025 11:03

It’s vandalism and the councils will need to pay to rectify the damage. If you’re in one of these areas, that’s your council tax!

Ponoka7 · 25/08/2025 11:05

Ticktockk · 24/08/2025 21:14

I’d best get my chalks out then, and start on the flowers and welcoming messages.

Do you have surplus housing, GP and NHS Dentist appointments, where is this utopia?

Racist intent requires a balance of overflowing love in the short term.
I’d love to have the magic wand to sort the other things - let me know what I can do to supply them.

Its nice to finally see a little bit of respect for tax payers' money and concern about wastage. Refreshing.

loulouljh · 25/08/2025 11:19

Its a proud to be British thing....

Ginmonkeyagain · 25/08/2025 11:43

Nothing say proud to be British more than spray painting a wobbly red cross on a mini roundabout, that is true.

Criminal damage. Textbook definition.

You see these arguments are pathetic
The vast majority of immigration is legal and approved ie wanted
Therefore it was incumbent on the government to provide the services to support that

Was it criminal damage when rainbows were painted on zebra crossings.

I don't believe you really need that question answering do you.

We could get the country into a postion to be able to provide them, by limiting the population, for now. There's nothing loving about bringing people in, to live in substandard housing, them and their children dying from damp/deprivation (which has happened more than once) and having inadequate health care and no job prospects.

Faceonthewrongfoot · 25/08/2025 13:12

I read yesterday in a BBC article that the "organisation" that initiated it had raised £14k from a crowd funder that they'd be "mostly using to buy cable ties and flags". That was truly depressing, that they'd rather buy cable ties than do something that actually improves their community.

They all look so crap. Sad pathetic flags flapping half arsed over bridges, thin wobbly lines painted over roundabouts. The bridge flags by us just look like pissed up Dave has thrown his union jack underpants over the bridge on his way home. If it was genuine pride in the country, people would be doing it properly so that it actually looked good. And I'm amazed at how many patriotic people there are that have had to rush off to buy flags ("ordered mine today, putting it up as soon as it arrives" comments all over fb) - surely you'd already own one if flag flying was your bag?

I've just seen a gofundme on my local Facebook group, and people are actually donating. I usually try and be kind to gullible people but if they're giving these grifters actual money I cant do anything for them
