AIBU to ask about this whole ‘painting flags on roundabouts’ thing?

England flags have appeared all over my nice town, painted on to the mini roundabouts. What kind of a ‘thing’ is this? Is it a Reform thing, a football thing or a ‘proud to be English’ thing?
If it’s a reform thing, WIBU to go down and add “England welcomes you to our country” to all the red crosses?

I remember when larger roundabouts were generally well tended with flowers by the councils. We have lost that too. Cost cutting.

I very much doubt the paint they are using is actually going to stick beyond a week or 2. I doubt they are using paint suitable for external surfaces where traffic goes ( its expensive) B&Q will soon sell out of red emulsion. Councils would do best to ignore, first bit of rain will do the job for them and not waste precious funds.

Councils and highways can’t ignore it. Insurance companies can blame them for accidents. Like the crosses on the give way markings. They then aren’t technically give ways.
if the poorly hung flags fall off a bridge and onto a car. Its highways fault for not removing them.

Also planting them helps water run off and flooding

me too, I thought the council/ highways had earmarked them for repairs.

Wishful thinking. Pot hole money has got to go on paint now

You're doing a hell of a lot of mileage if you're seeing so many painted roundabouts that you're seeing loads of them mistakenly painted with the Swiss and Danish flags. I don't think I believe you.

They are all over Facebook. No need for a mini roundabout tour in England.

Half the markings are faded and barely visible, particularly in wet conditions round here.

The post i was replying to said "most of them don't know what the St George's Cross looks like" and went on to say that there were loads of roundabouts mistakenly covered in Swiss and Danish flags. I haven’t seen any of those, have you?

Only 4% of immigrants were caught trying to enter the country on small boats. Not everyone is caught and they enter the country illegally then work under the radar, usually in places such as hand car washes, barbers etc.

The irony is that the people moaning about immigrants are usually the customers at nail bars, hand car washes, order takeaways etc.

Get some crosses on them and they might get repainted sharpish. Wink

alot of ours on quieter roads are the same. They do seem quite good. On major routes

If it is a Reform thing then that would explain why it hasn't happened in Kent - they know they'd have to pay to repair it. Maybe other council's can sue?

Councils repairing anything? That would be a first.

If it means they can get sued by the public for accidents they soon will! If press link this to Reform then Reform may have quite a large law suit on their hands...

It’s a shame most of them don’t know what the St George’s flag looks like though, I’ve seen various versions painted on roundabouts, the Swiss version, the Danish version, the fuck knows what version…. Perhaps it’s actually a warning that the Vikings are coming again? 🤔

Not more small boats!

Are you happy with them painting on the roundabouts and zebra crossings?

We have zebra crossings painted with Pride colours and Palestinian flags proudly flown, yet you have a problem with our national flag getting the same treatment. That’s very offensive imo

ShowDownTime · 25/08/2025 10:09

We’ve had to put up with gay rights flags popping up on gable walls and pedestrian crossings where I live. No-one was consulted. Now it’s the turn of the English flag. Everyone’s expressing themselves.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 24/08/2025 23:36

In terms of whether graffiti can be political I would say yes it can. Those behind this moment have been told their flags have to be taken down so they have daubed red paint on roundabouts instead. I see it as no different to wearing the political statement on your person except for the fact it’s more irritating to clean up - which I suspect is the point.

This was sparked by a council taking down flags so they could upgrade the lampposts to LED.

Those LEDs, coming over here and taking our lampposts 🤬

It’s because these were done the ‘correct’ way through authorities in particular locations.
edited because I’ve realised you’ve mentioned Palestine flags and I was referring solely to the zebra crossings

I do think everyone hand wringing about this is only giving more power to the meaning they DON'T want it to mean.

Let's all label it patriotism in its simplest form then it loses its (to some) negative connotations.

I think they are far less offensive than pride progress flags in any case.

No, you can’t just pretend it’s just some nice patriotism when they’re shouting racist abuse as they do it.
